funny thing, upon first contact with the kerbals, the tzan empire thought they were fierce warriors, riding their flaming ships to slam into and destroy them however after jeb finally successfully docked with them they realized that death by guidance error is quite common to kerbal spaceflight
And when he says "that may be an issue since they are decadent" I was like yes yes, he's understood! and then he goes "oh well, I'm sure there's a way around this"... D:
+Florid Monkey The tooltip for Advanced Empires explicitly says it does not affect Fallen Empires. Advanced AI number simply determines how many of the regular AI empires will have a slightly better start. Fallen Empires work completely differently from regular empires. Bit odd how there are no options regarding the Fallen Empires though.
Bless you Mr. Manley. The dev livestreams are so difficult to get through because of the devs themselves. Finally I have Stellaris gameplay I can watch while I am serenaded by your wonderful voice.
I have to admit that I bought this game just 7 min into watching this intro into it. The more I see of it the more it reminds me of MOO 2 and I have been wanting to play a more up to date MOO 2 like game for a long time now. Nice find! The fact that it is also made by the same folks to did Crusader Kings, Victoria II, and EU is also a great omen for me. Love those games.
+V3RTIGO222 Yeh, I originally wanted complain about that but only few portraits including that one look too similar to real beings. I was revealed that most of them are just humanoid things. Still game miss AI's or really weird stuff as a option but designs are overall good.
Me and KSP aren't talking at the moment. Very happy to have found this. I'm still in the fun learning stage. Good tip about getting new planets in early - thanks!
Advanced AI starts aren't Fallen Empires(I paused and read the tooltip), its how many of regular starting AI empires have beneficial handicap to them. So stuff like population, resources, technology, etc.
+Thomas Peterson Sorry but I haven't seen anything in this game that I haven't seen in OTHER 4x games ... I dont know what some people see with this game
+Lord Zephyros It's the first space 4x game released in the last decade that isn't either complete trash or extremely mediocre. Unlike most space 4x is actually has much of the depth of a grand strategy game and actually has content beyond just the boardgame-esque way most space 4x's play. And of course with future content expansions, this game will no doubt become one the kings of the genre.
+Lord Zephyros Internal strife & a meaningful late-game are what differentiate this from other 4X's for me - the early game is very similar to other games though, so you won't see it as very different until some hours in.
+Lord Zephyros I like the very fact that you can create your own species, style & back story down to the very most minute detail. I hope to create a 4th Reich ruled by the psychopathic clone of a mysterious original doner. Fear the infamous Adolphus Shitler'lord
Love how the choice of government and ethos affect the pop-up text and storylines. Such a simple little thing and yet so few new space strategy games does this.
Hmm, I wonder what legend the igarians could have about their sun. Interestingly it has the same root as their word for "earth". Well, it is very probable that the name of their planet, Istaci, comes from their word for earth, like in case of humans. We called the ground as earth before we were realizing we live on some planet. Only later we realized that the earth is curved and has a shape of ball floating in the space. We just continued to call our planet by the word for ground, because it was natural. I'd say that possibility that other species are calling their home planets in similar manner is very high. So "istaci" is probably not just name of their planet, but igarian common word for earth, ground, or soil. The home stars are named probably in similar fasion too. First they gave name to that shining thing they saw daily above their heads, and much later they realized that thing is a star, and very likely continued calling it the way they were used to for millenia. Word "istaccin'uk" means probably "sun" in their language. And the interesting part in it is same root with "istaci" meaning "earth". We don't know what "cin'uk" means, but I'd bet its sort of adjective, maybe even more than one, that's describing what happened with the earth (istaci) to become sun (istaccin'uk). In my head is popping an idea of igarian gods that in dark ages, before light was created, grabbed by their hands a lot of istaci (earth), formed it into a ball, lit it by godly eternal fire, and threw it up to the skies. Because they were gods, their throw was so high, that the burning ball of istaci won't fall back to ground, before the end of times. The "cin'uk" could then mean "burning and throwen" for example, so they would call that shining thing on their sky "throwen burning earth" - istaccin'uk :D I also like to think that during their exploration they call every sun on every planet as "istaccin'uk" whatever system they are currently in, and earth on each planet is for them "istaci". A report from Hydrobius II could look like: "The istaccin'uk on Hydrobius II looks very red and unnatural. The potential colonists might need to use artificial light that will simulate the natural light of our Istaccin'uk. During exploration of local minerals, we discovered unknown organisms living just about 1 inch deep in the istaci. They seem to be absorbing minerals from istaci like plants. Nothing like this exist on the Istaci." ^_^
I was hoping you would do a video on this. I already pre-ordered but I really wanted a good look at what to expect. So far I'm liking what I am seeing!
I think a truly free market society would be superior to any other centralized form of society. Space-Ex just launched a satellite and landed the rocket safely. Mmm efficiency....
Scott Manley I was actually just wondering about their use of grants and stuff. I had just happened to read a story about their latest launch and thought about the differences between free markets and government programs and how the"free-er" market has to be as efficient as possible and government doesn't.
Anarchism or libertarian socialism bro! Enough with this state communism vs capitalism vs free market capitalism trichotomy. Down with capitalism, religion and the state. Cooperation rather than competition. Collective control rather than capitalist control. Equality rather than subjugation. Liberty for all rather than liberty for one. Abundance rather than scarcity. Necessity rather than deprivation. People rather than profit. Truth rather than Deceit. Egalitarianism rather than hierarchy. Peace rather than war. Empower the people rather than the state! OK rant over lol. I'll try to make my society in the game be the most peaceful and moral, but power-driven empires might take advantage of us. :C
I never got into 4x games but when I quite accidentally stumbled upon one of the latest Stellaris Twitch streams by @ParadoxExtra and watching all its last broadcasts I immediately preordered this game a few days ago.
Yay! A new series from the Scott to rule them all! I really enjoy games from Paradox, especially the Hearts of Iron Series, which made me spending hours and hours of lifetime conquering the world.. Let's see what Stellaris can and maybe I'm gonna purchase it. :)
Space fennecs! Well, ok foxes.. vulpines.. but still! My fennec happened to be curled up in my lap when I watched you going through the race creation. I know the avatar animation is rather simple, but just something about watching the ears moving about. :P Oh, and you'll have to do a playthrough on your version of Kerbals some day too!
Wormhole is probably the best space travel. After full research, you need just 3 of those to get to every point of tiny galaxy. And they are also amazing for defense: just place your main army near closest wormhole enter point to the enemy. As soon as their fleet arrives, your fleet is there (like 5 days after, not more that that).
I think the best part of this game is going to end up being its modability. The vast majority of major, game-changing stats, like ethics and the like, are stored in simple text files in steamlibrary/steamapps/common/Stellaris/common. You can go in and tweak things if you want, or add entirely new races and the like.
Whoa, a paradox game that might actually be fun. Complex games are cool, except when the complexity just amounts to a series of reasons why you can't do the thing you want to do.
This reminds me of a game i use to play quite a bit. It was called Pax Imperia: Eminent Domain. Awesome game, and by the looks of it this one is as well.
Yay! I spent a lot of time with Paradox' Europa Universalis. And now it comes to space ^_^Time to lead another nation to a world dominance... I mean galaxy.
Nice how the game prevented you from creating a start where your homeworld would likely have revolted in short order; of course, some people might enjoy that sort of thing. ;-)
OH MY GOD I WANT TO PLAY YOU ARE SO LUCKY Also Crusader Kings 2 is the least popular Paradox title. They're in order Europa Universalis, Hearts of Iron, Victoria, Crusader Kings, March of the Eagles and the japanese version of CK
The least? I'd say it's 2nd most, after EU4. HOI is pretty well known, and out of "main" Paradox titles I'd say Victoria is least popular (size of fan base been metric, not how passionate people are about it...). Most other titles are themed version of the above, so it sort of shouldn't count.
Maciej Kornatowski Ck2 is the ugly gooseling here. While you might see it as a swan to the majority it's just an ugly goose. It's based on character development, and that's why it doesn't meet the standards of everyone who's playing for the grand scale strategy of it. While... yes it kinda is grand scale, I am pretty sure the majority of the " popularity" it has it's got because of the AGoT mod.
+Riael Kratek I'm with Kornatowski on this one. Just looking at the subreddits, CK2 has more subscribers than EU4, but I do see more EU4 videos than CK2. Victoria and Hearts of Iron are just too complicated and obtuse for most people to get into.
gamewizardinnc "Just looking at the subreddits" "too complicated and obtuse for most people to get into." ... With these two things you can pretty much simply stay out of the discussion, go back to reddit or something.
+Riael Kratek That's a fairly bold statement. Also, of course, from Paradox's POV, what matters isn't just raw numbers, but the fact that CK2 players are so fanatical they will buy ALL THE DLC. 'with our new DLC, we make your council actually have real power so while you can join your liege's and get favors, if you're an independent ruler you'll mostly be screwed over!' and we all go 'HELL YEAH TAKE ALL MY MONEY'. :)
Oh, that's so wonderful that you can queue up multiple different types of research at once. It always kinda bothered me in other games where you'd essentially be spending all of your empire's research on one single thing, because in reality it doesn't work anything like that. Although I guess we also don't live in the totalitarian state that is the typical 4X empire...
Oh pfft. If you have read the books you totally know the Cultures AI's would sweep the floor with the Imperium I will say though that Warhammer 40k has the upper hand on design. Space marines are just way cool
+TheD3rp i had a great game going in V2. Colonized 2/3 of africa and gained control of the southern states as Austria through a proxy war fought solely by the mexicans. Good times. Lots of wasted time, but still, good times.
It's a bit of a shame that in today's gaming industry a stable launch is something to admire. Enough whining though, Paradox have done an outstanding job here, and Paradox being who they are, I'm excited to see what kind of DLC there will be! Keep up the good work Scott!
Fallen Empires exist regardless. Advanced start empires are regular empires that start ahead of the curve. I.e they tend to have a bunch of planets, technologies and so on already. I personally found them to be pretty damn unfun as they end up dominating other AI's very quickly and decisively especially on harder difficulties where they get increasing boni on what they already have
In the beginning of he video when he's creating his species he's showing the various types of races and in the arthropoid section one of them looks like a chrysalid from xcom
Now that really makes me wonder if there is anything to mod on HOW a species reproduces; the aforementioned Chrysalids and also the Snakemen might make for truly diabolical (and anti-good) occupation mechanics.
Don't know if you found this out, but advanced A.I starts has no bearing on fallen empires. Advanced A.I starts determines how many normal A.I empires start with an advantage, Fallen Empire are not affected by any of the settings iirc.
funny thing, upon first contact with the kerbals, the tzan empire thought they were fierce warriors, riding their flaming ships to slam into and destroy them however after jeb finally successfully docked with them they realized that death by guidance error is quite common to kerbal spaceflight
+PsychoLucario Kerbals wouldn't quite "get" the whole kamikaze thing, because running into shit is basically how they land.

Advanced AI starts are not Fallen Empires. They just start with a few more techs and a few colonized planets.
+sitrilko That's pretty much what he said.
Before that he said that they expanded a lot but then stopped. That is pretty much what you said. In my opinion you are both right.
+Florid Monkey The tooltip for Advanced Empires explicitly says it does not affect Fallen Empires. Advanced AI number simply determines how many of the regular AI empires will have a slightly better start. Fallen Empires work completely differently from regular empires. Really glad you are playing this awesome game

I'm intensely envious that you get to play this 5 days early.

Pre-ordered. Stoked!
Fox species which is spiritualist, individualist and xenophilic. Oh god scott what have you done.
+Mikæl Yykmirov The ultimate evolution of the furry.
It's like if the sequel to Sword of the Stars was good, and then that game made a baby with Sins of a Solar Empire.
Don't know if you found this out, but advanced A.I starts has no bearing on fallen empires. Advanced A.I starts determines how many normal A.I empires start with an advantage, Fallen Empire are not affected by any of the settings iirc.
Whoot
You are super-fabulous!
Did anyone notice the music... It's awesome.
FYI Advanced AI start setting is not Fallen empires

This... Yeah, this might be the 4X game I've been after.
I want to mod the Drifters and the other Eve online races into the game that would be awesome
Would love to see you do a CK 2 Let's Play.
Scott Manley, have you ever heard of the Avali, would be an interesting race for Stellaris.
