I don't have first hand experience, so take this with a grain of salt, but from what I've heard, young people there are just as accepting as they are in the US, and Western Europe. Of course, given the aging population, that doesn't mean things are easy right now, but progress continues to be made, even if the effects are delayed.
Damn, mama is an absolute legend. Did dance choreography and scenes for iconic video games and anime openings and then decided to open a bar. That’s pretty cool
I really appreciate Cdawg taking the time to go to places like this. He doesn't make fun of these places or judge them, I really appreciate that he genuinely goes to learn more about them. And he's willing to make a fool out of himself to have a good time. I really do respect him for that!
I do confess that I was worried looking at the title and the title image as comedy can be taken too far especially at the expense of the LGBTQ+ community but having watched the video I agree with you. He is very respectful
All jokes aside I was worried about this when I saw the title, there's a lot of "look at me the straight dude doing things in a gay bar" videos that basically just use it almost as a punchline. Which in a way devalues the prospect of someone being gay or going to a place where they are around similar people. Connor engaged with everyone respectfully and used the video to ask actual queer people what it's like being queer in Japan and what being gay has been like in their experience, really raising some awareness for the community. TL;DR: Good job Connor you did it right and I'm thankful to see someone raise awareness of queer folks in areas that aren't just San Francisco and such
That's how I felt about this too. This wasn't a joke just a dude going to a bar, working there for a few hours and having some slightly awkward fun with some people.
Honestly love connor for how he respect every new things around him and maybe that helps him build up a good reputation because as he said in many of his video he do everything in the backround and ask for the dos and dont
Connor's not straight, though. He doesn't label himself, but has gone on the record saying he's not fully heterosexual but doesn't feel comfortable calling himself bisexual either.
Iirc Japanese gay bars are open to public. Some straight dudes and girls do frequent gay bars there since the Mamas are usually much more friendly and easy to talk to.
@@PhilipWester that I wasn't aware of but regardless being not were and popping into queer spaces can go really wrong if the person is not prepared or respectful. Point being Connor was really good about this despite not truly describing himself as queer
As awkward as he is, it's nice to see he honestly enjoys himself, and especially now he seemed to have opened up well, since the guys weren't pressuring him as much, not to mention the amount of drinks lol.
This video showed why I like Connor's 'I tried' series. Most of these kinds of videos try to play up the erroneous "Japan is so weird" stereotype, whereas Connor always tries to learn about the actual people.
I love how shy Connor gets when people show him affection or call him cute/handsome...but then again, I get v easily flustered/embarrassed and am the type to try to hide my face to hide my own embarrassment...so...I feel you, boy. You're not alone.
It's adorable how Connor keeps adding the -tte at the end of the things he's told to say. These men are right, he is kawaii. Also, protip for Japanese karaoke: you don't need to be able to read the lyrics if you only sing anisongs you know by heart.
I really appreciate how L was was always referred to by they/them, and it was never remarked upon. In videos like this one - examining queer culture from an outside perspective - small details like that can really go a long way in increasing acceptance and awareness.
This is a fantastic episode. Love how hospitable, sporting and 'real' Yui Mama, L and Aki were, talking about anything and everything. A real heartwarming gem
Connor: "What do you think my type is?" Yui-san: Isn't your type the kind of person who likes the color green? Yui-san: *has a bar that's themed green, wears green pants and also drinks green alcohol* I see, I see....
wait but Connor's Japanese has seriously improved! he's even starting to lose the accent when he speaks :) you can tell he's really trying hard to learn the language
L being the ultimate gay person, knowing how to sing so well, is a drag queen, does cosplay, and they're amazing at everything. I have to admit, I'm a bit jealous.
As a bisexual myself, this is an ANIME-zing video!! Since it’s in Japan, and I love their culture and customs , and they even support LGBTQ+, and they are NICEEEE- I NEED TO VISIT THIS AMAZING PLACE!!!
Well, saying that Japan supports LGBTQ is not true to me. They may don't hate them, but they don't care actually. I saw a video about it (can't remember the RUclips chanel sorry). Some of them even don't have a clue about what means "LGBT" (and I'm not talking about elders, but people around 20 yo...). Other think that it barely exists in Japan, which of course is false like anywhere else on earth, etc. I don't think this is the perfect country to be gay honestly.
And they literally have a whole ass town dedicated for LGBTQ+ community 😭😭 prolly the only Asian country to have a private gay town for Queers to enjoy and have fun.
For those who don't know, って(tte) is the "casual" citation particle "と"(to). It quotes whatever is before it. In this case, it's a shorthand for "something_somethingって言って(tte itte)" which basically means: Please say "something_something". To keep things short, it's almost as if Connor was saying "Please say something_something" altogether, when you're only supposed to say "something_something". Not making fun of him in the slightest, btw. Japanese is ridiculously hard. I'd never be able to hold a 1 on 1 with a native like he does so effortlessly. Either that, or I'd have to overthink things through resulting in probably like 30 seconds of silence after every verbal interaction, which is just awkward as hell. Whenever there's a citation particle, a citation verb usually follows. Although rarely used this way, the verb can also be used later in the sentence compared to the particle, i.e. it's not necessary for the verb to be right next to the particle. However, if the citation verb is nowhere to be seen in that sentence, it's deduced from context. Things like: と言う/toiu = "to say /that/", と思う/toomou = "to think /that/", と考える/tokangaeru = "to consider /that/", とする/tosuru = "to presume /that/... OR to treat ...(を) as..." OR an euphemism of と言う/と考える/と主張する(to shuchou suru), etc.. That's not to say citation is と's only job. There are plenty of functions attached to that single character that are deduced from context, so yeah. In って's case, however, it's all about citation. Be it abstract, or literal.
These people seem so chill, fr. Also I love their usage of the word "cute", finally some people who also like to call everything and everyone cute 👁️👁️👍
@@galaxy_kitten95 If there's a gay bar in your area I recommend checking it out. From my experience it's very easy to bond with the people there and maybe you'll even find the love of your life (if you haven't already that is) :^)

I know drag was mentioned for like a quick minute from this video, but I’m very curious of what the drag scene is like in Japan and it’d be cool if Connor could make a video about it someday. As someone who loves the art of drag and has watched Rupaul’s Drag Race I’d always wondered how drag is like outside of the United States so it’d definitely be interesting to see!
all I've seen about that topic is from a channel called World of Xtra, from the drag performer Xtra. they're extra-flamboyant but they have many, many videos on that topic!
I really love how comfortable Connor is around queer people, and how he is always respectful, kind and good humoured. It might be the theme of a video but it's never a spectacle. As a gay person videos like this make me nervous but Connor's are always SO delightful.
Im happy that fellow queer people also enjoy Connor's content. I've recently been seeing ppl saying that he profits over us ever since the yaoi audio book he did. I wonder what do y'all think about this??
@@meatloverdelight most Yaoi/BL are made for straight women so there's already issues there which should be addressed. I wouldn't really mind if Connor profited from an Ace story. If the story was harmful maybe tho. Another thing to consider, doesn't Connor work for a subsidiary of Bookwalker? So if Bookwalker wanted him to make an Audiobook book, what could he reasonably do while still keeping a good relationship?
@@aarondubourg3706 Also consider that it was his own pitch to make the audiobook. He used his own money to start this because he believes it would work out. It was not because it would be an easy money grab but he worked hard for it.
This makes me so happy. As a lesbian I thought that if I ever go to Japan, I might have to conceal this part of myself. Knowing that there are welcoming places like this one in Japan is heartwarming.
Agreed! Same sentiments! I love the discussion. It was so enlightening but also still very fun. I am looking forward to a follow-up, or just Conner coming by again.
This is like my favorite video i swear it was so fun and just great. Ik a lot of people in the comments said this but as a queer person I’m glad this is here, it’s a good balance and talking about the struggles of coming out is very real. Love to see stuff like this!
I like how connor looks like he’s gotten more confident doing stuff like this is Japan like in the yaoi cafe he looked very nervous but here he seems much more natural just thought that was interesting
I think part of it is the fact that he understands japanese more and can have a conversation now, I'm glad he has improved so much with the language :)
To be fair, I'd feel a little uncomfortable in the Yaoi cafe too. it's just really awkward to blatantly stare at people kinda making out. and the fact that that was basically all scripted and they are actors is a big factor. In this video, everyone was just being themselves, sitting, chatting, having a good time. it's less awkward when it's real. or at least I think that is the reason...

I teach mostly Japanese students. They said Japan doest fully accept LGBT . It is nice to hear that there is a place to be yourself you know.
I don't have first hand experience, so take this with a grain of salt, but from what I've heard, young people there are just as accepting as they are in the US, and Western Europe. Of course, given the aging population, that doesn't mean things are easy right now, but progress continues to be made, even if the effects are delayed.

Most of us brits don't care lol. I prefer gay bars as it's way less rowdy and the ego boosts are a plus 😂
I do confess that I was worried looking at the title and the title image as comedy can be taken too far especially at the expense of the LGBTQ+ community but having watched the video I agree with you. He is very respectful

The regulars and the bartender was so wholesome. I'm actually smiling my cheeks off just watching this 🤣
All jokes aside I was worried about this when I saw the title, there's a lot of "look at me the straight dude doing things in a gay bar" videos that basically just use it almost as a punchline.

No, Japanese people don't support LGBTQ+, you're imagining things rn. 😕
@@Azarath_Metrion_Zinthos probably* No reason to not use actual words.
Haha when Conner was repeating the “って” as the bartender told him what to say lmaoooo it’s too funny
LMAO
i was dying lmaooo he's too adorable

Connor: *goes to any cafe*
Kaho: *I’M A REGULAR HERE*
Kaho: they love anime
Conner: they do??
Conner: sprints to the door*
I like how connor looks like he’s gotten more confident doing stuff like this is Japan like in the yaoi cafe he looked very nervous but here he seems much more natural just thought that was interesting
I think part of it is the fact that he understands japanese more and can have a conversation now, I'm glad he has improved so much with the language :)
To be fair, I'd feel a little uncomfortable in the Yaoi cafe too. it's just really awkward to blatantly stare at people kinda making out. and the fact that that was basically all scripted and they are actors is a big factor. In this video, everyone was just being themselves, sitting, chatting, having a good time. it's less awkward when it's real. or at least I think that is the reason...
the atmosphere of the bar seems so nice, the staff have an amazing connection with the costumers. it seems so nice and friendly.
