    For a ship that entered service in 2008, the decor does look rather 1970s; the wood panelling and the push-button phone with handset, very retro

    • @largol33t1
      @largol33t1 3 месяца назад +1

      I love that look. They hired architects who KNOW what they're doing. The appearance is clearly retro but not overwhelming. On the other hand, they also made sure it was noticeable and that's what makes the room look great. Too often, architects go so lightly on a certain theme that it winds up looking like it was slapped together overnight and suddenly had one or two things changed just before they hand the guest the room key!

    The ferry from Bilbao (Spain) to Rosslare (Ireland) takes 30 hours! Very comfortable ship.
    In March 2023 I had to make an emergency trip, but strikes in France meant no flights and no fuel for a drive to Cherbourg to take a shorter sea route.
    And yes, the voyage across the Bay of Biscay lived up to its reputation. But the ship was very stable and minimised any motion discomfort.
    I have often used the Cherbourg/Dublin route. That takes 24 hours.
    Note
    I should have mentioned that I live near the Spanish frontier, and, by chance had a full tank for the car to make it easily into Spain where fuel was readily available.

    All cruise terminal should have a terminal building equipped with conveying pavement, cafe, toilets etc for passengers to sit down and rest while waiting to get on board the ship. It's inconsiderate if not brutal to have to walk that far with the luggage or especially for seniors and people with toddlers or disabilities.

    • @largol33t1
      @largol33t1 3 месяца назад

      I wonder if that's why they aren't as popular as trains. I'd rather take a train than a ferry if I have to walk that far in the brutal heat if the departure city is hot. Note: just because the city is by the beach doesn't necessarily mean it's going to be cool.

    Viking Glory in Turku-Mariehamn-Stockholm route is little bit shorter cruiseferry, but in gross tonnages it is bigger. It's also "newer generation" - it started it's service in 2022. When it comes to interior, my opinion is that Viking Glory is far more like cruiseship than this one, although it is also a passenger car ferry, or "cruise ferry". I have been in Viking Glory and although the ship is gorgeous, the most beuatiful thing is her route between three archipelagos. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MS_Viking_Glory

      @@Paul_Lucas To get most out of it, I recommend 23 hour minicruise for example from Stockholm; Viking Glory derparture from Stockholm in the evening, arrives in Turku in the next morning and is back to Stockholm in the evening. It will make short stop-over in Åland both ways. Viking Glory turnaround time is only about an hour in Stockholm and in Åbo so it is interesting to watch from the ship how - at best - almost 3,000 passengers and hundreds of cars and dozens of trucks are driven off the ship and new ones are taken in - all of that in about an hour. Also in day time in Marienhamn the turnaround time is about 15 minutes and it's there in same time with Viking Grace which operates in the same route but with the opposite timetable. There are "picnic cruisers" which change the ship in the Marienhamn from for example Viking Glory to Viking Grace or from Viking Grace to Viking Glory at the same time so they make like "half minicruise" and will we back at the port of departure in the same evening (they have departured from there in the same morning).

    Grimaldi also has a subsidiary in Greece called Minoan Lines. Nice boats, comfortable accommodations but the food is so so compared to ANEK lines.
    As for Iberia Airlines, won’t fly them anytime soon. Went with them to Spain about a year ago and it was the worst airline to fly on, original aircraft was grounded, had to wait an extra hour for a replacement bird and even then they had zero on board for beverages including water for a three hour flight. To boot they only accepted credit cards contrary to what the snack menu mentions. And when it came to paying for one item my card would not pass through their terminal, a USA issued card but it took my wife’s USA issued card. WTF??? I think RyanAir is a bit above Iberia but not by much.

    Boarding via the stern ramp and an escalator to the main decks is fairly standard on many Mediterranean/Aegean routes - saves the need for a passenger gangway.

    The escalators are a bit of a novelty. That's something you don't see on cruise ships very often.
