He is both Jiujitsu & Luta Livre Black Belt, he is using a gi but never relied on it for this technique, so it is easily applicable for gi & no gi.

There’s a variation I use with a lot of success where I use underarm to grab the ankle. Pull it to me and press my head into their stomach and boom
I use it too and jump straight to the other side and into sidecontrol

Why wouldn't the opponent just headlock you from there?
They can but it'll make them vulnerable to sweeps, it'll be almost 50/50
