- Don't get me wrong, the Maldives is absolute paradise with it's white sand beaches, crystal clear waters, amazing sea life, and 5-star resorts. However, that's not really the Maldives and you'll hardly even see that many Maldivian people, culture, or food when you go straight from the airport onto your sea plane or speedboat straight to your international resort. In this video, we go to Maldive's new "gigabit city" which is still under construction but is already a disaster.

At this point, there's not too many places left on earth that Johnny likes except for coffee shops and restaurants.

In this exciting episode: Johnny ignores the recommendations of other travelers and visits an island of Male. Expecting to have a fast internet available he soon finds out, to his horror, that it's pretty slow! im from the maldives and i get 100mbps internet with fiber for about 1,400MVR a month (90USD a month). the hotels and coffee places you went to probably had their internet throttled, which is a way our ISP's cap our internet usage. they give us a certain amount of gb allowance per package, my 100mbps package has about 900gb allowance. after the allowance runs out the internet throttles to 5mbps on all packages. the hotels and coffee places usually have alot of people using up the internet resulting in internet throttle. which is likely why you were getting slower speeds.
That[s the problem. Other countries haven't had Throttled Wifi since 2004. 😂

Can you mention gigabit internet access one more time? I'm a little slow in the morning so the first 10 times you mentioned it, i didn't really get your point and why it's even important for a one night stay in the city
Because Maldives is expensive and that is the selling point so they don’t deliver what they promise. No one is going to there and waste their money if they get this experience

When you said the internet is not even half a megabyte, it's actually not even half of a megabit, which is 1/8th of a megabyte. so basically the speed was not even 1/16th of a megabyte per second

it's so weird that the main selling point was "gigabit internet" when they don't even have it. I'm in a rural Ukrainian town of around 7000 people and it has gigabit fiberoptic internet and also mobile LTE

In all seriousness though, that beach in Male is drop dead gorgeous. Amazing to see water like that beside a city.
As for the country and its main city, there seems to be decisions in certain nations or cities to make it easy to attract tourists for the long haul.....or not. Plus, most of us digital nomads have the contrast of Chiang Mai, an almost unreal mix of low cost of living and high quality of life. It really is Easy Street. Or on an even different level, my current location of Prague, which is likely the best city on earth for so many reasons.
Any time you travel somewhere not boasting the same level of mindfulness when it comes to various aspects of the country, or city, for locals and tourists alike.....it is something we may notice..
Hopefully, everything keeps growing to benefit all in that country.

The only reason I'm questioning it is because even though I would be away, I would still need to be in touch with what would be happening with my business back in the USA.
So my concern was if I needed to do a VoIP call or anything along those lines or use the internet realistically how much bandwidth there would be.
The way he was describing it and showing in the video that it is barely there.
The other part of my question was just trying to clarify if some of the bigger and more expensive resorts have any type of faster Wi-Fi, or is the Wi-Fi speed used by people extremely limited based on your video?

I'm living in Hulhumale' and i have pretty good internet speed. But in your case, hotel does not have the speed/ specific package.. If the country has Giga internet, does it meen everyone has to have the Giga speed internet. Where you living in the world man?
We went to 5-6 different places in Humhumale, including coffee shops, cafes, restaurants, hotels, none of them had working WiFi.
@@JohnnyFD sorry you had a bad experience from internet. But please factor that there more than 1200 islands scatter and putting infrastructure through islands are expensive and huge amounts of work. And I believe the resorts you were stayed had good internet. And if the resorts had good internet why capital city doesn’t. This is due to data is expensive in Maldives and resorts can afford it, but small places in city can’t afford all the luxury packages. However almost all the apartments has fiber connection and my internet speed is 100mbps. And please give credits to the county who does not have anything but ocean around them. Maldives have only limited resources due to all covered by sea and yet they able to reclaim an entire islands just to benefit for public. Also here only 2 telecommunication operators due to high infrastructure cost. Hope you have a good day

I "love" how some here are criticizing those of us who think that this entire trip by Johnny is just at the wrong time. After he not long ago, just received his permanent Residence Card for Ukraine, said its his new home, threw a big party for it, then he left. How can others see that this is, maybe not wrong, but definitely not right? I would say that those of you here making positive comments about this trip ARE THE Russian Trolls! Why? Because the longer he is out of Ukraine, the less he can do for Ukraine and all of those, his new fellow countrymen, who CANNOT LEAVE.

Hi Johnny. Apologies if this is a bit personal or if you've answered elsewhere, I don't mean to offend, but I'm sure a lot of your fans might be interested in how you reconcile diving in the Maldives while your new country of permanent residence is fighting a war for it's existence?
Because Johhny did 1 year of huge amount of work with volunteer organisations, donated directly to people in need and to people in front line, plus supported the businesses like restaurants by just staying in Ukraine. He was there in black winter when Russia constantly tried to mess with civilians psyche by bombing power stations in big cities. He might have needed a mental break , nothing wrong in that. I think we underestimate the complexity of this war. Many parts of Ukraine is "working" though it is still huge threat. And people cant sit and cry over 1 year, they had yo find normality, even able to go on vacation. Just to cope. Then they go back and continue. This is a marathon for them, and they might have to drink water. And we cant blame them. Im not interested in vacationing videoseither, but think is good if anyone needs recharge.

Yes, those of us who have been following and enjoying Johnny's vids since BEFORE last February KNOW full well what he does. Even if he doesn't advertise it, we know from other people, like Brandon Mitchell, about all that Johnny has done for Ukrainians. But they cannot leave UKR now ,can they? Either for lack of money, or they are men 18-60 and not allowed to leave, NO vacays for them! It will be very interesting to see how he is received when he gets back to Ukraine. For me, I didnt see myself going to Ukraine in wartimeto support businesses and open volunteer accounts myself, so I dont think I have much say to shame anyone else for their actions or what they go through or how much they donate. It is easy for us online to judge what is Heroism and what is Not and Who is more Deserving of What. Yes, Johnny COULD leave Ukraine for vacation, so he did, and Ukranian men cant and it is horrible. And other fact: Ukraine war is raging. But the horrors in Ethiopia that happened, that doesnt get no attention, or the fact other conflicts rages on in the world that we dont even talk or read about. Things are more complex and nothing or no man is perfect.

The Maldives are not for the cheap youtubers and backpackers. The same for Bhutan- they don't want cheap Westerners or other backpackers. They are just building the city and you are expecting a free or cheap paradise. There was/are political instability and a coup d'etat in Maldives. btw, Mobile phone for 100 people- USA-107, Maldives 135, Bangladesh-107, Canada 86, India-82

We have fast Internet in maldives. The reason why u are experiencing slow Internet is because of hotles and cafe takes cheapest Internet packege available. Better to get correct informationbefore posting video.

Yes and UCI students would migrate to Newport or Huntington for r&r summers or maybe sort of school dorm life. Idk. For 20 or so years my family (huge) rented houses (plural) every summer in Newport. It was clear kids had occupied them before! 😩 I went to UCSB but I had a friend at Irvine so visited her beach rental once. Good gosh, that was 30+ yrs ago. So none of this is relevant! 😂

Perhaps you can't get the idea of what makes up the Maldives without actually getting there. The postcard perfect 'seacenery' and stunning resorts are just one of the few hundreds of mostly single resort islands.
The main island which is where the majority of Maldivians lives is Male, the capital which is a horrible, overcrowded muslim city with no places of interests, skip it unless you have half day to kill like I did and curious to find out but totally not worth it.
Not all beaches are created equal, the closer your resort island to the airport (Hulhumale) or Male, the poorer the beach and marine life.
The Hulhumale island that the host is talking about is an artificial island that has been reclaimed to house the airport (yes, you used to have to take a speedboat or ferry to go to Male) and now has become bigger than Male. It was still a horrible island when I was there a few years ago with dirty beaches and lousy local hotels which are mostly airport hotels or accommodation for those who wanted to experience Maldives with limited budget.
Being a strict muslim country, you can only get alcohol and non halal food (pork or western deli) in the resort islands itself, not in Male or Hulhumale or the airport (duty free liquor will be confiscated), so I won't recommend you to go to the Maldives for holiday unless you can afford a nice resort to relax and do nothing. Otherwise, it is boring as hell unless you pay for expensive island hopping or out of resort day trips.

Not sure why you keep mentioning that its a muslim country, its none of your business. The maldives is literally advertised for rich tourists who want to come here to do nothing. The local islands are Not made for the enjoyment of tourists...tourists were banned from places like hulhumale and malé until a few years ago so its definitely Not made for your enjoyment. These are places where normal people live their lives. The country was not made to impress you, the resorts have alcohol because thats where tourists are suppored to stay. I didnt know some people thought the country was made to please them. Its our Country there is no reason to get involved in the politics of the country. You cant come to local islands expecting to get alcohol as if its made for you go to places that actually accomodates tourists or if you cant afford it stay out...its not made for people who can barely afford food.

I am from the Maldives and its mostly pronounced "Maa-ley" by most locals. But ive never heard Mali as Mal'e (We do have a thing called "Mali" that's like a weird "dance" festival here but its not a place.)
