Fires happen in the Amazon, it's just that when they aren't man made the natural wetness of the weather and region does contain it more than places like California and Australia.
If you have a hot water heater with a tank, you can hook a hose up to the drain valve at the bottom and run it out to your yard to get hot water without having to boil pots. It only has to be 150F to kill ants, you should be able to set your HWH that high. Just make sure to turn it back down to a safe temp once ur done boiling ants. Since you have a water softener it's a good practice to use the drain valve to completely empty your HWH every 1-2 years anyway to reduce the amount of hard water build-up inside the appliance, even if you don't need to scald any ants.

I got bit by fire ants all over my leg 2 days ago. I've used ant killer pellets, raid spray, and flooding. Thank you for opening my eyes to a new method.
Fire ants are resistant to flooding because of their original habitat. They actually make ant rafts to float the colony to safety so normal flooding won't work. If you do try boiling water you have to be persistent every time you see a mound and you need to find the main nest as ants set up extra nests or "satellite" nests. Meaning a lot of nearby nests can also be the same colony. Ultimately though if you find the main nest and kill the queen then you win or you keep being persistent and have the death count beat out the queens production count.
