A tribute from an unknown fan to four incredible people: Bob Saget, Norm Macdonald, Betty White & Bob Einstein
I wish I had a way to explain how important these four people were to me. I've never been good at dealing with death. I don't cry when people die that I know. I think about them fondly, I get sad for a bit, and I move on knowing that that's just the way life works. The only exception was when one of my ex-girlfriends committed suicide, I definitely cried for that one. I've never been to a funeral, not even for family members who have died, because I couldn't bring myself to go. I have lost countless people in my life starting in high school, many of them friends I spent just as many countless hours with and learned with and grew with and became a man with. 14 people died from the graduating classes I hung out with, every one of them clearly tragic.
But I never cry. I never cry, I never properly mourn, I never go pay my respects, and that always made me feel guilty. I've learned to live with it.
But I remember the first time I cried when somebody died. It was March 4th 1994, and it was John Candy. I couldn't understand at the time why I cried, but what I did learn from that day forth was that for some reason, I almost exclusively cry for the death of comedians. When John Candy died, it hit me really hard. As a teenager I was of course already a bundle of nerves and the realization that I would never again see a movie with John Candy in it that I didn't already know just really hit me.
Now that I'm older, and that same pattern has continued, I can kind of analyze it and figure out why it is I react that way. And I think I've figured it out. When a family member or a friend dies, you got to spend lots of personal time with them, there were good times and there were bad times, there were complications, they were good memories and bad. But the fact is you got to spend lots of time with them. You experienced their life with them.
But comedians are different. Comedians have one task, and one task alone, literally every single time you see their face. The only thing they are capable of doing through that screen or from that stage is making you smile and laugh. The two happiest things in the world. You will never have a fight with them, you will never have a complicated relationship with them, they will never have the opportunity to hurt you, they quite literally exist for one reason and one reason only. To make you smile and laugh every single time you see their face.
And to lose someone who served that sole purpose in your life, especially when you have leaned on them so many times when those other people disappointed you, it makes them incredibly important. They are necessary. They are medicine. They are coping. And some of them, like the four mentioned above, will have the opportunity to raise you and never know what they did.
Not only that, but they are somebody you have love for because of those wonderful things they do for you, but you will never ever have a chance to meet them or build a relationship with them or experience their life with them. So there's a certain finality to it that just doesn't exist with someone you got to spend a lot of time with. For me, that is tremendously sad.
So I really can't help it, when we lose a comedian I always have at least one about where I find myself sobbing uncontrollably thinking about all the times they helped me get through something really hard and they didn't even know it.
That is bad enough when it is, say, a Don Rickles, who for me was more of a comedian's comedian because I never experienced his stuff live or new. Or when we lose somebody like Joan Rivers. Again, one of the world's most important comedians and I didn't shed a single tear because I never really experienced her directly, I only experienced her through her influence of all of these people I love so much.
But the four people above, man, this one is really personal for me.
To Betty White, your biggest influence on me was being the funniest face on the Golden girls after school when I was at my grandma's house and she was scratching my back and making me feel like the safest, most secure, most comfortable human being on the planet. You were the backdrop for a lot of those moments for me. Anyone who knows how important my grandmother was to me, and how important those back scratches were to me, that is explaining that you meant a lot to me Betty. Not to mention, you did share a name with that very same grandmother.
To Bob Saget, it couldn't be more obvious. You were America's dad. You helped show me morals in a family dynamic. You helped me understand things like teenage drug use in a bigger context than my teachers were able to show me in school. Your voice was the voice of the cats and the kids getting hit in the nuts on AFV. You were the guy in my favorite movie growing up, Half Baked, yelling out the most obscene, and therefore funniest, line I had ever heard at the time. But the real problem for me on this one, and the reason it's getting really hard to contain myself is because I know exactly how important you were to your friends. Because you were best friends with all of my favorite people. And knowing the kind of person you were I feel for all of those people who did get to spend that personal time with you, and who are now so incredibly devastated to lose somebody that I know was one of the best people in their life. That is tragic and terrible especially at his age.
To Bob Einstein, I mean come on man you were Super Dave. You raised me those Saturday mornings and made me laugh so hard I would sometimes pee my pants. Having the opportunity to watch you get creamed by semi trucks or slammed into Bridges or falling off a building like a real life cartoon character and being just fine afterward, that gave me something to do when I was really upset about what was happening in my life. When certain people mistreated me I would sometimes leave that situation feeling very small and worthless and powerless, and I would turn on your show to distract me from whatever had just happened. And then later in life to see you as Marty Funkhouser on what would later become one of my very favorite shows, curb your enthusiasm, and again, to know how important you were to the people around you I just send my heart out to those people and I feel so tremendously sad that most people will never know your unique brand of comedy because you never shoved it in people's faces. You just did it to make whoever happened to see it laugh, and I think those people are the most important comedians we have are the ones that never hit that Dane Cook status or that Robin Williams status. But you will be so incredibly missed.
And then we have Norm macdonald. And I've been writing this with voice texting this entire time but I just had to switch over to typing because I can't get my voice to work right now.
Norm Macdonald, even more than any of the other three, was probably the most beloved man in Hollywood. He genuinely cared about every single person around him. he literally lived every moment of his life to make anybody who happened to be around smile and laugh constantly. More than that, if he found out that you had gotten sick at one of his shows he would call you afterward to apologize that his comedy was so bad. If he knew you, and your son was in the hospital, he would show up with flowers and offer to hang out while you got stuff done at home. He was just that kind of guy.
But beside that, he just meant such a tremendous amount to me. When I was growing up I found a lot of comfort in stand-up comedians and Norm was one of the first I fell in love with. I was a huge Conan O'Brien fan and Norm was a very frequent fill-in guest for them and whenever I saw Norm walking out I would just get giddy. Because I knew that whatever he was going to say, it certainly wasn't going to be normal and it was going to make me laugh. He would walk out towards Conan's desk and he would have this little glint is in his eye and this mischievous grin, I know that Conan has talked about it on his podcast already but he didn't have to tell me, I saw that when I was a little kid. But when Norm came out, he was coming out to cause trouble. In the best way possible. And I always thought of myself as that kind of a person. So I felt a certain kinship with him, particularly with his incredibly quirky sense of humor and dark, macabre jokes, I really felt a connection to the man. He was like a comedy father to me, or more like a comedy uncle, always feeding me the comedy food that my parents wouldn't normally let me eat.
But I don't even want to think about all that. Because again, I may be morning his death but his son, partner, best friend, and other best friends, meaning just about everybody in hollywood, must be going through a million times what I'm going through.
To four absolute comedy legends, I hope you are all sitting around a table right now with Rickles and Williams and the rest, having the absolute time of your deaths.
Rest in peace to the four best friends I never got to meet.
