Just some trivia for you. With the three seat first row for the passengers, the middle seat's headrest didn't come as standard - the fixed rear seats don't have a middle one either. I guess so the view through the rest view mirror was uninterrupted. And if you spun the seats around, then you could move the headrest to the other, which was now on the far side. I suppose one of the previous owners just grabbed a spare one from somewhere.

Wow! That makes sense. My last Hiace had a “missing” head rest.

Sweet! I’ll have to hit you up - I need to get it licensed before I do anything to it.

Is it hard to find parts? Looking to buy a 98 turbo diesel Hiace.

How was the import process? Did you buy it direct from a dealer in Japan or a broker? Any recommendations?

I need to make a video about this - but I have bought from BeForward.jp twice and it’s been great. They have vehicles in their own inventory, but also list cars for 3rd party dealers that participate. If you buy from a 3rd party off BF, you have to wait 3-6 weeks for that dealer to get the car to BF. This van was a 3rd party sale through BF - I purchased in September and it arrived in the US in January

Good to know, thank you. I'd certainly appreciate a video or post about the process!

Nice rig. Curious how you got it registered to drive home from the port.

So my experience is with Freeport, Tx so it may be different if you pick up at a port in a different state. But there was a repair shop about 5 minutes from the port that did vehicle inspections. I had the van inspected, and then drove about 20 minutes from there to the county office and applied for out of state temp tag. Proof of insurance was needed. $7 for the inspection, $29 for the temp tag.

It can be. Some of the drivetrain is easier because some of it cross references with US Toyotas
