Picking up every bit of rubbish on a six hour run - The 12 Days of Newness | Ep 7

- RUBISH RUN: Driving to the tip one day with a full trailer load I noticed, serendipitously you might say, how much rubbish was on the roadside. I thought ‘gee, I’m heading to the tip, I really should pick up the rubbish on my way!’ But no, with too little time, nor space in the trailer, I just went about my predictable business and the rubbish stayed where it lay. This day of newness is about making good of that idea and going to the tip with an empty trailer, filling it on the way! Simple as that.
This is Day 7 of 'The 12 Days of Newness'

My brain cannot compute how anyone can think it’s socially acceptable to discard their rubbish out of their car window.
I feel bad throwing out bread crust knowin full well it will be eaten by a bird
@@LifeOfLeviwhy tf would you throw breadcrust out the window? It’s also trash and doesn’t belong there. Where’s the problem with putting it away later?
It’s not the eating food from the side of the road that kills me…it’s when you touch it with your dirty, trash-coated hands first 😂
Bla bla bla
When the next pandemic comes up, his body will not be stuck with the pathogen, but the pathogen will be stuck with his immune system.
Meh 🤷♂️ it's got a wrapper on it
Had a wrapper + didn't actually touch it. You do much more dangerous things daily then he did eating that food.
it has a wrapper so it doesnt matter hes not touching the food
Hi folks. It’s finally here, the next episode of 12 days of newness! Cracking run, shame about the loot, but a satisfying gig. Enjoy the second half of this series- a new newness coming atcha every two days! And thanks (again) for waiting…
Hello, thank you for the videos! I would really like to know more what you are up to in life, could you do another Q/A? And or just a life update video, how did you fare during covid? what are you up to now in general. Thanks again for your videos!
Why so late D;
Once your tree video is 2 years old can you show us how much the trees have grown?
@@cookingwithkimbap4432 PLEASE DO THIS BEAU
Beau I agree with kimbap show us the trees!!!
As a child, I threw my gum out the window. My mom stopped the car and made me go find it. That's the only thing I've ever thrown out the window. Now I take my kids around the neighborhood and we do regular trash collection - unfortunately there tends to be lots of dog poop bags.
As a fellow trash picker, I admire how you can make a film about trash picking with such incredible storytelling. This will surely inspire others to get out there and do their part. Great work Beau! Goodonya
👌👌
Well said, Pick up trash!! As a fellow trash picker myself, I completely agree with you.
I disagree, i doubt anyone can make picking up rubbish interesting
@@smashyrashy I agree I can sit here and watch him do his part and enjoy it but I'll be fucked if im going out in the hot sun just to pick up rubbish
Well, he just did. And if you don't find it interesting, that's fine. Trash still needs to get picked up. And I'm glad some are joining the fight.
When I still smoked, I kept the butts in my pocket until I found a garbage. I threw one on the ground once but immediately picked it up because it felt awful, like I spit in the face of nature. Genuinely don't know how people can see a lovely road and decide "that's a perfect place for my waste!"
I think most people don't litter, but the trash that one person creates in a day is so high that the few that do litter create such a mess
5:25 Beau : " I really do hope he washes his hand, cause umm, Jesus, I wouldn't shake my hand right now, and I'm pretty feral " 🤣
Imagine if every human was half the man this guy is... we would live in a totally diffrent world. Keep inspiring people beau!!
Yea nothing would get done cause everyone would just run all damn day.
@@jellojoe00 ... not accurate, or funny.
You saw one video of him picking up trash and now you think he does this every run? I’m not saying he does or doesn’t but don’t take everything you see on the internet as real life truth.
@@jellojoe00 You sound miserable, I hear physical activity in nature like running for example helps improve the mood.
If you have children, or are a guardian pass on the virtue. Not because "Meh mother earth" but because it's the right thing to do.
This is the type of videos that should become a trend or a challenge to motivate people to do it more.
Ppl would ruin it and throw trash out just to film themselves picking them up
@@hidesan7794 sadly i really do think so as well..
I somehow forgot to check your channel for a whole year and now I can go through 12 months worth of your videos which is really making my day.
hit that subscribe button! i am like a pig in a shit when I see a new video
Well subscribe then...
I think it's universal that the tip always shut on the day you make the effort to go.
"Imagine being so angry at your headrest that you chuck it out the window" Genuine LOL Love the twist at the end, too 🙃Thanks for the fun video.
"ya little fizzy bastard" is my new favourite phrase
This is how I wish I could conduct my beach walks! I try to pick up all the garbage and literally within 15 minutes the bag will be bursting. It's awful 😖 But i'm inspired by people like you, evertime I see your videos it makes me want to do better things in life.
Start small ✌️
"Ya little fizzy bastard" - my favourite line of the video
In Britain, this is what our council and road tax should contribute towards, this is a guy doing it off his own back. Bravo sir.
Thanks JS. Just running about the place
I love that I recognise the purple rubbish collecting bag from another video. Very durable! 👏
Gotta love those expensive horse food bags from his sister 😂
I love this, wonderful story telling as always!
Back when I was working in downtown Houston, the last leg of my commute was a mile walk from the train station. I made it a rule that every day I would have to pick up at least 1 piece of trash. I usually ended up finding a plastic bag and filling it up on my walk.
I did this for months. Then one day, there wasn't any trash to pick up. It was a truly magical feeling. I cleaned an entire street!
Unfortunately when I moved I no longer had this last 20 minute walk, so I couldn't pick up the trash anymore. Within a month it looked like I had never done anything. Was pretty disheartening. I cant comprehend how people can just litter without a care in he world. Makes me so sad.
That’s Houston for sure. Visiting any other more civilized state is a breath of fresh air.
I wish I was more like this man. I will be more like this man. The world needs more of us.
Classic twist at the end. I've had lots of 'this is Thursday' and the thing is not open moments recently.
I walk and cycle alot (and pick trash/litter) I have noticed that on our country roads you tend to get multiple items (e.g Red Bull cans) at around the same spot which I think tends to indicate it's the same person (possibly on a daily commute) dumping their daily fix. Did find 4 really heavy duty ratchet tie downs the other day - made my brother really happy so it's not all bad!
You should organize this as a community activity, it would be a great way to bring people together.
First Sunday of March is Clean up Australia day
Thank you for fixing the remains of other people's idiocy.
I live on a rural but reasonably well trafficked road in SEQLD. Every time I mow the road verges I find beer cans, bottles, cigarette packets, coffee cups, clothing etc. always end up with a bag of other peoples rubbish. thanks for doing this. You’re a bloody inspiration.
The bit with the retching around 4:30 was hilarious 😂
The world needs more people like Beau, good on you mate 👍
You can be that person as well... easier to wish but in the end you can start this.
Commendable!
I occasionally pick up trash when going on a walk and immediately regret it. Once you start, you become aware of just how much there is and it's frustrating.
A few days ago I watched some video unrelated to garbage from Ruanda. The presenter mentioned that one day of the week the people dedicate their time to cleaning up voluntarily. I don't know how widespread that is in the nation, or if it was just some local thing, but it was great to hear. Everything, in the video at least, looked very clean and tidy.
Love it, my husband and I go "plogging" (plastic jogging) every once in a while!
That’s dedication, hats 🎩 off to you Sir 🏃♂️
Aside from the entertainment of all your vids, it's the way they make me think that has the greatest value. Thanks...if ever I'm down South and I see you, be sure I'm gonna stop you for a chinwag
I, too, wonder what goes through people's minds when they just chuck rubbish out on the roadside. Should we blame their lack of upbringing? We taught our children to leave a place better than they found it--something taught in the USMC and BSA, which was part of our lives for many years. I hope this fun film will inspire lots more people to take a bag along when out and about to be prepared for picking up some discards. Your feralness is charming!
I suspect a significant amount blows out of the back of trucks/trailers bringing trash to the transfer station. Or alcoholic containers where there are laws against open containers.
Inspirational and admirable Beau!
"That's a dirty hand, make sure you wash that hand." 😂😂😂😂
I had the pleasure of bumping into Beau and his beautiful daughter in a café near his house about a month ago.
The top bloke you see in these videos is the same top bloke that didn't tell me to fuck off when I interrupted his lunch date.
Keep up being an amazing person my friend.
❤ Jordan & Family.
Great to see it. I wish it was as inspiring as people say it is...
...I go to a nearby forest almost every sunday and I bring a trashbag along and just pick up all the litter that I can find (and that can fit in a trashbag). Usually the bag's full very quickly, especially when the weather is nice and a lot of people visit the area. I encounter people who say it is inspiring, yet the amount of trash doesn't seem to reduce; I never see anyone else doing it. So far for inspiring people :(
thats why we cant have nice things... some azzhole always fks it for everyone
I don't know if I believe this. I do this and I've only gotten weird looks. I get it though. There's nothing inspiring about a guy walking along the riverbank carrying half a car bumper and a broken laundry basket full of bottles and cans.
I pick trash at my local wildlife park, and whenever people compliment my efforts I reach in my backpack and pull out a bag for them too. It bridges the gap between "that person is doing something good that I can see" and "I now have means to do that nice thing too" and people do help out!!
Every human is a miracle, capable of doing something awesome, regularly, if only they were nurtured and supported, instead of repressed and forced to compete against one another for imaginary point scores (money, grades, votes, etc.). Maslow tried to help humanity understand what our needs are for flourishing as a species, yet we dismiss him, and pretend that "everything is fine" in our society, while we are nearly all sick, in some crucial way.
@@krose1551 that's a great idea
Good work Beau. Did a rubbish ride the other day for Clean Up Australia Day with my old school bike and homemade bike trailer. Amazing how much you can carry if you have a few basic rope skills.
Bike trailers are the best! I initially borrowed one from a neighbor, then bought one, then another. They have been life savers! When I was homeless I even had two bins on them which were my kitchen and bedroom (with my office being my backpack) so I didn't have to use the shelter's tiny lockers (which were only accessible during the night, IF I was lucky enough to win the lottery to get a bed that night). And when I'm not homeless (thankfully I'm housed now, and even own my own land!), my trailer is what I use to move most everything, from large tables to a stack of 8 foot long wood planks to make a bed frame with, to very soon, all of my stuff for having my own stall at an art market. Some friends of mine had the heavy duty, long Bikes At Work trailers and occasionally mounted a canoe on them, to give land canoe rides at events with.
Man your trash collection videos are insane! Blows my mind how much trash you collect.
Please keep up the socials, it's a good reminder to pick up things (mostly rubbish) out of nature.
Me and 100'000s of others do the same, unrecognized, in front of their door as well as in a valley or forrest far away. Because we believe in a cleaner, healthier world. We CAN cure. We CAN turn it around. Showing it to a larger crowd might inspire others to collect trash of others, too, and maybe some others, not to throw their garbage into places where it doesn't belong. Well done.
Beau you are one of the most underrated creators on here, keep it up mate!
+
Who underrates him?
Awesome!!! I adopted 1.5 miles of highway and I walk it several times a week and collect the litter for recycling. One person can make a huge difference! Give a hoot, don't pollute!!!!
Anyone that picks up other peoples laziness/arrogant trash throwing are literally angels who will go to heaven.
You really are an inspiration Beau. Really wish I had this level of commitment. I tend to take a bin liner with me when I go fishing on the canal, though I get so disheartened when everytime I return there was even more crap to pick up. So disheartened in fact that I haven't taken a bin liner with me for a while. You've definitely fired up some enthusiasm within me to start doing it again though.
I hope you can do a part 2 Beau! I love your trash collecting stuff
You absolutely beautiful human. I can't help but pick up trash when I go to the beach. It drives my missus nuts until I explained that we don't trash our homes so why trash the ocean?.
I now get help. The world, is broken but people like you are helping. Thank you.
Thank you! One person can make a big difference
You’re a good egg Beau we all love your work. Hubby & I pick up what we see every beach walk. Now I just need to start exercising!
Good Job! ❤ I Whitewater kayak on the Potomac near Washington DC. I go out a few times a week and there is always some trash that I pick out of the water and bring home to recycle. I always wonder who would do this because I’ve never tossed any trash out in nature and I don’t think my friends would either and yet we all pick up trash.
As a kayaker I have to admit I have left some trash behind. Always unintentionally but forgot to put in drybag, once lost the drybag because I failed to clip down properly. Chap sticks and sunscreen tucked away but lost when flipped. Looks like a yard sale when with a group and we try to recover everything but never 100 percent successful.😢
The world needs more Beau’s…. I wish I was a beau..
I was just thinking how I was missing this new series and bam it pops up with a new episode. Watching this and realizing I spend much of my own runs doing the same things, collecting trash instead of hitting miles, I thought wouldn’t it be great if I did my own day of running with a trailer and picking up trash. Just as I had that thought if figured why don’t I do my own 12 days of newness and then the vid ends with the spoiler of tennis for the next episode. Seeing as I am a tennis pro for a living that’s my sign that I can’t have this as one of my many ideas anymore. It’s settled and I’m embarking on my own 12 days off newness starting with a trash run this morning.
Beau thank you for constantly inspiring myself and others and pushing the world towards newness and adventure!
Good luck on your 12 days of newness challenge!
@@nadinegriffin5252 thanks. Any suggestions, I’m finding it difficult to come up with things. Since this post I’ve been running with a trash bag but haven’t started my 12days until I am happy with my list of new experience to try.
Love this should go world wide .Charity rubbish collection run or walk .
I can see this becoming a new global fitness regime, Beau’s Rubbish Miles Challenge! Bring it on!
Beau = National treasure!
Growing up as a kid I always remember the Tv adverts and the little Green signs dotted around town saying “Keep Britain Tidy”. You no longer see anything like this (or not as much) and the removal of most of the litter bins, I see people just dumping there rubbish on the floor without a care in the world. I find it so frustrating and sad that some people have the “someone else’s problem” attitude.
I do this most times I run or hike. I usually take a backpack lined with trashbag.
It’s crazy how many people littler when a bin is literally 2 mins away
Beau you’re a bloody legend and you’re wife has the most incredible patience. Thanks for inspiring change every single time you do one of these.
Over here in Germanistan I would hardly get out of my driveway with this goal. And my driveway is hardly 50m long.
Its a fantastic place to live. Every morning I wake up and tell myself that this is just perfect :)
That Handshake moment, hilarious.
Thanks for cleaning up the road 🤩 A suggestion for next time - wear rubber cleaning gloves for safety sake ☢🧤 I've been looking forward to the remaining new things 🎉🎉🎉 Blessings to ya Beau!
thank you for not forgetting or dropping this series, I do wonder what happened but just glad your going to finish this series
He maid a community post about it when he stopped. He took a break to spend the holidays with his family.
I think he said in a prior video that he was going on a holiday for a bit.
EDIT. I found it, in the pinned comment on the "Day 5 - Firewood" video :
G'day tubers. Thanks for following along all the newness. This is the second last new day (6 eps) before we take a few weeks off to gather our thoughts and get some sleep- and head to the YOUESAYE and CANADIA for a few weeks. Day 6 will be along Chrissy eve and that will wrap the first chunk of newness. Eps 7-12 are shot and on the way and will get you early in the new year. Mitch and I and Jodi need a few days off to eat cake and watch Cricket while packing. Thanks everyone
On the seventh day of newness,
Beau Miles gave to me,
Reclamation running,
A one boat open sleigh,
Fuel for the winter,
Centrifugal treasure,
My mug on a canvas,
A run, walk and swim,
And a donut, a trim and striped tee!
Very nice!
You should have dumped it all at the gate. Only messin'! Welcome back Beau.
Marshmallow Santa’s spoils of war 😂
great storytelling/editing skills, love it a lot brotha!
Props to you sir for cleaning up so much waste! Can't believe how selfish some people are just dumping rubbish.
David Attenborough would be proud!
Would be great to see this spark a wave of similar videos - video creators out there doing their typical fare for the channel, but picking up all the trash along the way. So satisfying to watch nature get restored.
How about people just stop throwing trash *out their windows* . It's insane.
@@VitaKet agreed. Trashy environments breeds trashy people and vice versa.
A certain percentage of garbage is that food wrapper that fell out of your pocket or taken by the wind, but the large majority is scumbags.
I Walked past some crisp packets and bottles the other day and the thought stuck me, what would Beau do, so I picked them up and found a bin half a mile down the road, love ya Beau
Beau, I have loved watching your videos for quite some time now and have noticed a recurring theme about you and old train stations and was wondering, why not for something different try and have a crack at 'restoring' the old platforms of the stations along the line you ran? it would make for a surely amazing video and would be something incredibly sentimental to you im sure! Not only would it be something fun to uncover/ try reform the old platforms with odd bits and bobs you find around but it would keep what little history is left of them alive! It would be amazing listening to you talk about these stations as you give them a little spruce up! its just an idea for something as I know you are a do-er and it sounds like something you would enjoy doing!. could call it 'Save a Station Sunday'! :)) I really hope you see this, all the best to you and your wonderful family!
I dont know if Beau reads the comments, but I do know that he does have a way to contact him through his website (in his about page) and since this is a brilliant idea, I would recommend sending this through there. Good luck!
@@HighBeanz I sent a thing to him on his website! :) Hopefully he sees it!
Beau, please make some merch! I'd totally wear a t-shirt with your face/name on it. It would also be another way to support you in what you do, which brings me so much joy!
These posts are just my absolute favorites.
Fizzzzz "ah you son of a"
Great job Beau. This is next level litter picking. It's so sad that certain humans feel it's acceptable to just dump their rubbish wherever they feel like it. You summed it up perfectly during your chat with the driver. Inspirational stuff as always.
I would be demoralized doing that same route a year from now and seeing how much trash is there. Some people are just disgusting. Good on you for cleaning it up!
Wow, great project! Thanks for making Earth a bit cleaner! Bummer of an ending, but I get the sense that it worked out in the end. :D
Turning up to the place to do some stuff and turns out it's closed today is so relatable! Good work mate
I call it Exploratory Litter Patrol! Following one piece of trash to the next, almost creating a journey of adventure. I have always picked up rubbish, but watching a fellow nutter go about it brings home a sense of community. I can't change THE world, but i can change MY world. You inspire, and i thank you.
Thank you Beau, as a young Australia who despises littering in any form it’s good to see and know that other people feel the same way, and again thank you for picking up rubbish I and the future of Australia appreciate what you have done and continue to do, keep up the good work
Local news station should run this, WTH folks?!?!? Legendary as always Beau... :D
We need more people like this! 🙏😎👊
‘I wouldn’t shake my hand and I’m pretty feral’ 😂
It's like Trick or Treating. you start out by getting one piece of candy at a time, and sure enough, it builds up to a whole bag of candy!
Uk here, veteran litter picker, love this. I treat it like a social study of peoples behaviour. Some things are just bizarre, such as 7 pairs of boots, a blonde wig and a mini skirt, others are sad like discarded love letters. Keep going, its keeping me inspired.
Hey I'd like to pick up trash now and then too, what kind of bag do you use to store the trash before disposing it? All advice is welcome :)
Absolutely incredible film and I love the way Beau goes about his adventures, just seeing the trailer filled to the brim after only a couple of kilometers was really heartbreaking 💔
I thought something bad happened, videos just stopped, glad this was posted.
I've thought about eating wrapped food off the side of the road but never have, watching you do it has now convinced me to do it next time
Imagine what a better place the world would be if we were all like Beau?
This video gets a ton of praise comments. You can go out your door right now with a plasticbag. Basically, do the same thing on a smaller scale, and get the same praise from random people. Will you do it?
I can't resist a marshmallow Santa when I'm walking out of the grocery store and they're staring me in the face for 99c a piece 😂
I do the same when out hiking! Glad to know there are other souls out there who care! Keep up the good work❤
i absolutely love this video and today I did my own trash run. i went to the recycling center with a wheelbarrow full of trash and picked up most the trash i found on the way. it was fun!
thank you for inspiring me, Beau! ❤
Worth the wait.. Thank you Beau for continuing to be inspirational in the trying times
You're a bloody legend Beau. More Beau Miles in this world would be a damned good thing
Doing this without gloves, especially the metal, makes me a little queasy haha. But good on you Beau!!
Been doing this around my town since the early 2000's. On the one hand there's the instant gratification of seeing the results of your efforts but then on the other hand there's the anger and frustration at people who can't be bothered to hold onto their shit until they get to a dumpster.
Same! And the sense of impotence when you see everything that you recently cleaned is again full of trash in just a matter of days... so disgusting!
I wonder if in day 20 years from now we’ll have advanced to the point where, when they sort the rubbish they can get our DNA off it, and then fine people for dumping. That would be magical! 😢🚮😢🏃♂️👨🏼🌾
same same. and all the beer cans/bottles tossed from drinking and driving are super duper depressing and infuriating.
Yeah but I think it’s more important not to confuse incompetence with maliciousness, I reckon all the small stuff probably came from unsecured loads, like Beau’s was.
Beau, the world needs you. Who dumps 'stuff' on the road???
Beau's dnd character is definitely chaotic good
I love you man. You are such an amazing person
This is so inspiring! Tmr i will take a big backpack with me on my run and pick up everything i see! Thanks for being an awesome rolemodel on the internet.
worth the wait. thank you, fellow rubbish collector, for an entertaining video as usual! made my day. the editing and camera work is tight! 👌🏽
I wouldn't be able to do this without gloves! Good on ya @beau miles
