The Iranian regime has not only remained unaffected by the sanctions but is increasing its power every day. Even as a proud American I respect some of our geopolitical adversaries Iran being one of them. In my view I think its pretty admirable for any nation thinking they can go toe to toe with us. It's good to think in this direction. One main and the most important factor that the West fails to understand , is: Iran has history and identity, and Iranians know who they are and, what is their place in history. This is exactly what the West does not have. At its best the history of the West goes back to year 1500 when THEY discovered the earth is not flat ( or some of them). While Iran's history of having a central government goes back AT LEAST 2,500 years. Many of those 2,500 years were painful , but there was many periods of pride and glory, progress and achievements. All things considered, the religious establishment was always the sustained power in Iran. There were ups and downs but the Shiite powerhouse finally emerged for good. As an Iranian, we have a strong Muslim identity. However, we follow Shiism, a branch of Islam influenced by Persian culture. Shiism places emphasis on the lineage of the Prophet and his teachings. Unfortunately, some of our Arab neighbors hold negative sentiments towards us due to these differences. Nonetheless, we hope to unite against the evils of Western imperialism.

What a lot of people don't understand is that US does not want a war with Iran. USA would like very much to keep Iran a whole country and contrary to the mind games and publishing the fragmanted map of Iran, It is to the benefit of the US to deal with a central government rather than 5 or six states. A coherent and stable Iran is to the advantage of USA. Althought the buffer zone north of Caspian sea is there, but Russian agression and change of plans is there also. Russians still eye the Persian gulf. A stable controlled Iran is necessary to keep the Russians out of the Persian gulf.

All things considered, the religious establishment was always the sustained power in Iran. There were ups and downs but the Shiite powerhouse finally emerged for good. Having attained power after much difficulty, it will not give up for the foreseeable future. It's now entrenched from Lebanon to Afghanistan.
