There is a reason why people are unwelcome to him in the first place, the ideologies and politics he choose to lead are the ones that will turn us back almost into the dark ages of tyrannical leaders that have already fallen by colapse or through wars that were fought by those who wanted to keep freedom and liberty wasnt the best option. He would have been loved by the community, but following the ideals of political and religous extremisms and having the lust of power; it is important that people like must stopped at all times no matter the cost. However, the smear campaigners are also in the wrong in this as well. Ruining someone's life to the worst degrees of crime through fake and falsified evidences is wrong not just for him, but for any victim that have their lives ruined because of lies crafted by people who have lusts of their own. Not only that, it also allows Alec have his loyal followers to stand stronger by him because of this incidents; and if the chances will go towards the dark side then the harsh consequences of death will come upon them.
I think a lot of these "extremisms" are over-exaggerations by Root Media for content, and Aleczaender is just really good at roleplaying his role in his empires. He's a down-to-earth guy and you can easily tell when he's in-character and out-of-character.
