      Lol I referred to the chair as Frankenchair when I posted it on Instagram. A bit odd looking but it works very well for me. I picked up the chair for $20 second hand and built the base from scraps so it was an economical solution too.

    Nice shop! Even though I have a tiny shop, I do have a few things you mentioned, like the miter saw and table saw sharing the vacuum dust collector in one area. My shop's in the basement, glueup clamps and glue, etc. stored upstairs, in the spare room. Your video gave me the idea to bring my moveable torsion top upstairs and use a folding worktable to put it on for assembly. For larger assembly I'll still have to take everything to the basement. That spare room is just waiting to be dedicated to glue-ups and finishing (waterborne finishes only). For one thing, there's no sawdust upstairs. Thanks for the inspiration!

      Glad to hear you got some inspiration from the tour! I've had tiny basement shops too and I've learned that it's not so much about how much space you have as how you use the space. Thanks for sharing about your setup!

    Congrats on the new space Dan, quite an improvement! It looks like you've taken the time to lay it out well. One thing you might want to consider is a vented finishing area, if you do a lot of that sort of thing. It looks like you have plenty of space to section an area off in the future.
    I also noticed what appears to be two small electric heating units in opposing corners. Is that enough to heat the entire shop? I've been considering electric heat as well.

    • @DPShopTalk
      @DPShopTalk  6 лет назад +1

      Thanks Kristofer! I actually don't really do much finishing in the shop. Any lacquer work I send out to a spray shop so all that I do in my shop is an occasional hand applied finish like varnish oil or a water based finish. I find when it comes to cabinets that it's not worth doing my own finishing on them.
      The electric heaters do heat the whole shop space. There are a couple electric baseboard heaters upstairs but the main level is just heated with the two on the walls. They seem to work fairly well to heat the space but I don't think it's the most cost effective way to heat in terms of operating costs. The shop has a separate power meter and the first electrical bill was a little higher than I was hoping for. I've since turned the heat down a little lower.

    Nice to see you again after all this time. That shop has great potential. Do you have plans for materials storage? Seems like you have lots of flexibility to do that.

    • @DPShopTalk
      @DPShopTalk  6 лет назад

      It feels good to be back at video production again Ken. Things have been crazy busy the last few months with the move and lots of work going on so I thought I would take advantage of the pause in the work to get some content out again. I do have a heavy duty metal wood storage rack system that I used two shops ago that is in storage right now. I don't work with enough solid wood lately to make that worth bringing to the shop at this point but if that changes I'll definitely set it up. I also have a stepped offcut storage bin that I might bring to the shop soon and put it upstairs. Most of my work uses MDF and melamine these days which isn't nearly as much fun as solid wood but it pays the bills.
      As far as when I receive deliveries of sheet goods for a project I'll probably store those against the overhead door in the front of the shop until they get cut down. That's what I did in the last shop and it worked well. The other option is to stand the sheets up in front of where I have my partial sheets stored next to the clamp rack. I might try both and see what works best.

    • @DPShopTalk
      @DPShopTalk  6 лет назад

      Thanks! Even if I could afford it I honestly don't think I would get machines like that because of the space they take up. This shop space has become very multi use so keeping the space flexible has been key

  • @DavidStanton

    Nice space Dan. I think I would have gone with a new stool rather than a few blocks of wood under a chair?

    • @DPShopTalk
      @DPShopTalk  6 лет назад

      Thanks David. Well I bought a new more expensive chair to begin with but didn't find it comfortable. I ended up buying this chair for $20 second hand and since I got it for so cheap I didn't mind taking it apart, drilling it and modifying it. This chair is very comfortable, does exactly what I was looking for and was very inexpensive. Plus I figured it would fit in with the DP Shop Talk style of inexpensive shop made solutions.

    Nice shop Dan... just one thing... no spray booth ??... where do u apply finishes ? 😎☘️

    • @DPShopTalk
      @DPShopTalk  6 лет назад

      Thanks Peter. I usually send stuff out to a spray shop for lacquer finishes. I've found that it's not worth me having my own spray setup. From time to time I'll do a hand applied finish in the shop but I don't do spray finishes. Insurance also costs more if you spray in your shop.

    Hey. Dan ,real nice new shop! Looks great! What kind of heater is that in the upper corner of the shop? How does it work for you? Do you like it? Is it 240 volts? Thanks Awesome shop!

    • @DPShopTalk
      @DPShopTalk  6 лет назад

      Thanks! The heaters are just construction/utility heaters and yes they are 240 volts. They work fairly well at heating the space but I don't think they are the most efficient for running cost. I had a propane furnace in a past shop and found it to be better cost wise.

    Hi Dan i gotta question I am in a VERY small shop and i wanted some dust collection and I was wondering if a household vacuum cleaner would work for light duty dust collection

    • @DPShopTalk
      @DPShopTalk  6 лет назад

      It depends how much dust you're making and what kind of vacuum you have. Household vacuums aren't really designed for collecting wood dust and it could shorten the life of your vacuum depending on what kind of vacuum it is. One thing that you could do is hook your vacuum up to a Dust Deputy which would separate the dust and keep it from going into your vacuum.

    • @aleksamaker8118
      @aleksamaker8118 6 лет назад

      Thanks but ouch that's quite expensive do you think i could make a homemade version

    • @DPShopTalk
      @DPShopTalk  6 лет назад

      You can make home made versions but they usually don't separate out as much of the fine dust. What kind of vacuum do you have?

    • @aleksamaker8118
      @aleksamaker8118 6 лет назад

      Dan Pattison oh i have just a small regular vacuum my real concern is if it has enough power

  • @handiman5001

    nice shop Dan, but most hobby woodworkers will be doing with Far Less Space -- so your shop is somewhat irrelevant, but your ideas are good and your projects are better -- keep up the good work.

    • @DPShopTalk
      @DPShopTalk  6 лет назад +1

      Thanks Brent. You're right, most woodworkers won't have this much space and this is the first time I've ever had this much space out of the 5 different shop spaces I've had. I've had tiny little basement workshops in years past so I definitely appreciate the luxury of having the larger space. I want to continue to share ideas though that apply to shop spaces both small and large. It's not so much about how much space you have as much as how you use it.

    Dan, I was too filled with envy to watch all of your tour, but picked up on the end stop on your sliding support shown at 3.12. I made two of those supports after watching your earlier video ruclips.net/video/H6cXuwQOwz0/видео.html but had missed /forgotten about the end stop, so popped into my workshop to add them. Thanks for that - they are now even more of an asset.

    • @DPShopTalk

      Glad to hear that. Part of what I wanted to accomplish with the tour is to reference back to and remind people about past episodes and ideas so I'm happy to hear that it helped.

    Hello, I am French, sorry for the translation I use google translate to do the translation.
    Your videos are very well done thank you for your work and your sharing.
    I would like you to face me a small video or description of your material contained in L-boxx 7 minutes 06 seconds in your video. I see that you made yourself the foam forms of your drills and accessories but I do not see what drills you use and why you have 3? why do not you have a drill in 18 Volts. The 3 screwdriver in 12 volts are enough to spend an 18 volts.
    I thank you for your answer and continue like this.

    • @DPShopTalk
      @DPShopTalk  6 лет назад

      Good question Ben. The three 12V drills and drivers that I have in my L-Boxx are the Bosch Flexiclick, Bosch PS41 impact driver and the Bosch PS22 pocket driver. The Flexiclick gets used mostly as a drill with the regular keyless chuck but also gets used with the other heads when needed. The impact driver I use for driving long screws to hang cabinets and the pocket driver gets used installing cabinet hardware where more finesse is required. They get used for other jobs as well but that is what I use them for mostly. I also have another similar L-Boxx setup with a Bosch 18V hammer drill and Bosch 18V socket ready impact driver and those get used for more heavy duty jobs. As a cabinet maker and finish carpenter I use the 12V tools the most since they have plenty of power and are smaller. Hope that helps.
