I just can't help but laugh at the bit where Super Mario 64 is being praised for being a revolutionary success of game design, but almost all the gameplay footage shown is of the game being broken to hell.

A little annoyed how you glossed over all the additions to New Super Mario Bros. except the Mega Mushroom.
    - Each level includes three Star Coins that must be collected for 100% Completion. No Mario game had this beforehand but they became a standard for the franchise even in the 3D installments moving forward.
    - Yoshi from this game onwards has his Flutter Jump first introduced in Yoshi's Island.
    - A large number of elements from Super Mario 64 are brought over. The 8 red coins, Ground Pounding, Wall Jumping, and the Triple Jump all make their 2D debut here. Yes, I know Red Coins and Ground Pounds were introduced in Yoshi's Island, but Mario first used them in Mario 64. Furthermore, Mario's physics in these games are based on the 3D titles, which is a significant difference from World.

It's sort of like Mega Man, really. Mega Man 1 established the series, Mega Man 2 refined the core gameplay, Mega Man 3 and 4 added a few new moves to his arsenal. After that, the series really didn't know what to with itself (7 and 8 gave graphical upgrades but didn't change much, and 9 went retro). The result is a whole lot of games that are definitely good, but most of them don't really have a reason to exist besides "boy, it would be nice to have another Mega Man game this year." That's the real reason they added the gear system in 11 - they didn't want the game to be just a level pack.

But now,as a developer, you got the problem that the power Up also is a mushroom so that the player thinks he needs to douche it to! But because of the blocks setup after the Question Block Gomba Setup, you catch the power mushroom when you run forward in a normal speed, even if you try to douge it! And so you automatically collect that power Up and realise that it is something good! And that's why this setup(especially the one in the first game, because of the block setup after the Gumbo Question Block Setup!) is really genius!

2D Mario is one of the few Nintendo franchises that never lost the secret to mass appeal gaming: Simple inputs that leads to interesting and/or complex outputs. Most of gaming has followed the path of trying to please the hardcore gamer, who is especially prone to confusing complexity for depth. If they have to press 12 buttons to accomplish a task, it seems to us/them like they're getting "more" game. In reality, their substantive input is virtually the same. A modern hardcore game might seem to have more meat on its bones, because instead of having to just jump on a goomba's head, first you need to open your map, track down an enemy, pull open your inventory, select the right equipment, then go press, O, X, X, TRIANGLE, O at it, but after the first two or three times of this, it ceases to be any more engaging than a Goomba stomp and becomes exactly as repetitive. In short, most gaming choices are horribly weighted down with incredible amounts of bloat, which do nothing to change the core interaction between the player and the game. Hardcore gamers may put up with this, but people who don't put up 200 hours on a video game with regularity naturally feel like it's a complicated waste of time. Please note that I'm not criticizing hardcore gamers for this. I'm exactly the same way. I'll pile up expansion pack after expansion pack on a board game that in no way significantly alters its core decisionmaking, but it does make the game take an extra 2 hours to play.
2D Mario follows a small number of hard rules which are intuitive and consistent. It takes about a minute and a half to know everything you need to in order to play the game. Just by looking at the screen you have a rough idea of what's happening, and what causes success and failure even if you've never touched a controller before. Further, it's broken up into small, bitesize chunks, so almost anyone no matter how busy can fit in some play. It may not be gaming's absolutely most pure form, but it's pretty close.

But you could try a “no secret exits” challenge run of New Super Mario Bros./Luigi U (Probably a “while permanently crouching”). Great video as always! I think nostalgia is the big part of the puzzle you're missing here. the release of Mario 1 through World lines up with when so many of us were kids, growing up and falling in love with video games for the first time. The 14 year gap lines up with a lot of us growing up, and then the Wii Mario games line up with a lot of the same people who grew up loving mario as kids having kids of their own. Think about the multi-player capabilities of the Wii mario games. They are completey perfect for the kid who grew up in the 80s to take his now 6 year old son and teach him to fall in love with gaming, while walking alongside him in Mario games.

Before it, I had only played SMB3 and it really frustrated me that you had to reset everything if you lost all your lives (which wasn’t too hard to do, esp without the checkpoints). SMBWii removed all those problems and I ended up finishing the game several times. While I haven’t ventured off to play any other games, I’ve watched many videos on the different games (particularly SMM), and if I were to encounter one of the other games I wouldn’t be so averse to playing it. So yeah, definitely special to me as well :p

About the games themselves, I think SMB1 is better than Lost Levels and Super Mario Land. I may even state that is better than NSMB series because NSMB series rehashes everything (the gameplay, the esthetics, the style) so nothing really stands out and SMB1 was fresh and surreal. I don't blame anybody from preferring NSMB, looking back SMB1 no longer feels fresh and surreal, but I really don't imagine anyone preferring Super Mario Land 1 or Lost Levels over SMB1

The only thing about Super Mario Run that I object to is its price: it feels like it's more expensive than it's worth, to me.
I bought it one of the times it went on sale, and I actually *have* had quite a bit of fun playing it - even if I've only ever done so just to kill time while I'm waiting for something/someone. :)
And I have to say: having played a few OTHER games on a smart device and being able to use only the touch screen… Super Mario Run controls a lot better than, say, Fairune does - because in Super Mario Run's case, the screen IS the button… rather than being a place that has "buttons" that you touch for moving and actions and such. :)

0:55 ...It kinda did though. They need to move on from the "NEW!" games because they are getting old. They need to reinvent 2D Mario again. They either need to go full 3D, or find something better than the NEW games. I would love a 2D Mario game that had a new, beautiful, unique art style (I would personally love to see hand drawn) and new ideas. The 2D platformers we get now feel really plastic-like and very cookie cutter. They need to ditch the art style, (its like 15 years old now) ditch the old music and come up with something new, and for the love of God, ditch the grid! Every 2D Mario game takes place on a grid, which was okay in the 90's when you didn't have a choice, but that was thirty years ago! It's time to move on. Nintendo needs to be more creative and innovative with their number 1 series. It feels like we get more creativity from the smaller series. Mario, as the face of Nintendo, should not be one of the most overdone, cookie cutter games they have. It doesn't represent the brand well at all.
Please note, I am talking about the 2d games. Mario Odyssey was amazing. New Super Mario U Deluxe was not. Mario Maker 2 is coming out, and while most people see it as a step forward for Mario, I see it as the death of the new series. Nintendo is going to have to give us a Mario platformer that we can look at and not say, "Why would I get that? I already have Mario Maker."
Anyway, thanks for reading. Let me know if you agree, what you think they should change if so, or if you disagree, and why I'm incorrect. Let me know!

Not to mention the new modes, nabbit and whatnot. Why are you ignoring literally everything that isn't a level?
Also you really underestimated Mario world. It's not just similar to 3 and 1. It brought so many new mechanics and yoshi.. YOSHI!! And the mechanics are just man... I don't know why but i very slightly prefer new super mario bros wii, it has a few things that nsmbu doesn't have like curved slopes, a level with wind, and more unique gameplay ideas. But i have the feeling thart if they release a switch version they could make an even better game with really new stuff

Actually I prefer Wii. It seems much more structured and actually feeps like a journey/adventure. The open world map in NSMBU makes everything look bland and just feels like a selection of levels.
I really really love NSLU though, that one is actually probably even better than NSMBW.

The fact that they didn't even compose new music for most of the levels speaks volumes about how it is mostly recycled. I still think it's pretty good out of context.

THANK YOU. I like every game in the series, but when Super Mario Bros. U came out I wasn't feeling it. It didn't feel like it should've existed despite being a good game. I've been feeling so uneasy about it, but I couldn't tell why, it just felt like a sequel and nothing new. I have a similar feeling with Kirby Star allies, it's too safe, too similar and needed more purpose and motivation.

Nintendo is a gaming industry god. They have a secret way of revolutionizing themselves with all series. Mario, Zelda, Pokemon, Metroid... Nintendo milks franchises. A LOT. But they do so in a beautifully perfect way. They keep a loyal fanbase and listen to them. They are masters.

Edit: I love metroid it's just that I think Nintendo kinda screwed the pooch, so to speak, as they waited way too long to release games in certain cases and then just gave remakes. Or how they kinda botched the portrayal of certain characters. (All just my opinion)

I found this video quite shallow and a bit disappointing to be honest.
    - The context isn't completely explored, Mario Bros 2 ( the real one ), was meant to play with player's expectation which is why a lot ot the game seems like "trolling", like a warp zone that take you back to the world 1 or yes, the mushroom that kill you. It's an interesting idea for a sequel.
    - There is also the fact that Doki Doki Panic IS a Miyamoto game, i think it's quite an interesting stuff to add.
    - Mario Land seems like a success but inside Nintendo, there wasn't "that" satisfied with it (yep, the physics), it was quite a rushed game and they took the decision to bundle the console with Tetris instead... And it was the right choice. Interestingly Nintendo of America said at the time "if we bundle Mario land with the console it will only be for young boys, if we bundle Tetris instead, it will be for everyone".
    - Mario World is a much more interesting game in my opinion but since you limited yourself to the first level, you couldn't really see it but the fact that they changed straple of the serie like the block that aren't destroyed but turn on itself instead or the Goombas that are now rare enemies called Galoomba and can't be killed directly but have to be taken like a shell is quite strange. They also introduce puzzle with the ghost houses or stuff like forest of illusion.
I find it interesting because since they had to change those kind of fundamental thing, it feels like they were really desperate for new ideas at this point. They wanted to show new ideas in 2D Mario and that's the last time the main core team made a "normal" Mario Games. The next game from them was Yoshi's Island which IS a good way to show new mechanic in a Mario game : By changing the character which will have new moves. In that way, it's a shame you didn't at least mentioned that game since it began as a "New Mario Game" and evolved this way because it was the only way to them to make a "new Mario game with new ideas"
    - Interestingly, something very similar happned for Mario Land 3 Which is Wario Land of course. It's a much more exploration based game than Mario. It's not a Mario game just because Mario isn't the hero but we can clearly see the first one being a LOT like Mario (power up and all) and having the new concept of searching coin and treasure ( way before New Super Mario Bros 2 ) and creating a new "hero" for that because it wouldn't fit Mario very well. That's a very good way to make a sequel !
    - In a way, they never stopped to make Mario games... They just called them "Yoshi" and "Wario" games instead. Especially the first of those series since they were made with the same team as Mario games. ( and began as a Mario Project )
    - I don't really understand why you didn't mentioned the new moves on the NSMB DS either and how the coins have a different placement on this game, i'm actually quite curious about how they taught new player those move since i honestly don't know but you never talked about that either.
    - You didn't even mentioned the true new mechanics of Mario Wii which was the multiplayer... I mean... I don't really understand why NSMB Wii is more "Mario perfection" than Mario Bros 3 or Mario World myself, it was quite boring to me compared to those game in my opinion BUT the fact that they found a way to make it multiplayer is incredible and was very hard to do. This is why the camera is so dezoomed here and why you don't seem to find a conclusive "new thing" in there.
But if it was just that, i wouldn't be disappointed. No, what i didn't liked is that... Well we never talked about the first level right ?
I mean, the video started fine with the single goombas that go to the player but you stopped the analysis after that... Like if the player doesn't react : He is dead and it's actually the first mistake that do a lot of new players. The whole process makes them learn the jump button, they can't go ahead without it ! You didn't talked about the introduction of the first mushroom which is in the middle of 5 blocks. The mushroom rebound to the pipe and then go to the player. Why ? Because this way, it's quite difficult for a new player to avoid this power up, some of them though that it was another enemy after all ! So yeah, if they jump to avoid it, they touch a block and immediately go back to the mushroom and learn that it's actually a power up.
This story is quite well known because Miyamoto talked a lot about it. Which is why i was very interested to learn about the OTHER Mario games.
But you mostly mentioned the kind of enemies that was there. Not really how the first shell you can grab is out of a jump so a player will naturally have the B button pushed. Or how the Mario Bros 3 first level was actually very hard to do because NES games tends to be horizontal or vertical but couldn't do the two at the same time. ( A lot of good video is about that ) But nintendo at the time REALLY wanted to show some verticality action which is why the racoon was developed. It seem you don't fully explore the context of the games ( Why the game was developed and even who developed it ), you don't explore the technicity ( How the game was made... Being "just" amazed is something everyone can do but you are Ceave Gaming, you talk about very technic stuff in Mario Maker video so i was underwhelmed. ), and you don't really explore the design either ( how the level differs in design, not just enemies count ).
So yeah, i found that video to be quite frsutrating because it goes to a lot of direction without having one very satisfying to watch...
And so, i even disagree with your conclusion.
The new thing about Mario Bros U was obviously the asynchronous gameplay which... Well... Didn't worked.
It's not that NSMB U isn't special, it's more that the special thing they wanted to make failed very very hard. And you have to play in multiplayer to see it... But since you don't, there were no chance it would happen.
Then again the new thing of NSMB Wii was the multiplayer and you obviously have to play in multiplayer to see it... So yeah, maybe it's not that illogic ?
And i don't know why you made a free pass for New Super Mario Bros 2 because it seems to me like a recycled Mario Land 3 with a less cunning plan since they did it with Mario instead of a new character.
But why did those two games happened ?
Nintendo said something quite interesting at the time, they said that while the Mario team want to make Mario 3D games, the Mario 2D ones is the ones that sell the most each time.
I think those two games are the result of Mario 2D not being the focus of the core team of Nintendo ( the ones that actually took risks in those Mario 3D games ). So the Mario 2D ones "had" to not be too crazy in order to be sure it will works again for a cheap price. (Since you don't have to find a new design) Well, just a theory of course, but i think it fit well with the context.
Sorry to have taken your time, i hope you learned some stuff from there.
Ceave Gaming is really a channel that took me by surprise by how interesting he usually is, even the latest Mario Maker 2 analysis was really good and show a great understanding of how designs works which is why i took ( way too much ) time to write this.

Not many people seem to mention how different Super Mario World is from other games, what with not having bricks, completely changing Goombas, having normal Piranha Plants in only one level...in fact, not having many of the classic SMB enemies return. It also changed how Koopas function, removed every power-up introduced in SMB3, introduced secret levels and secret worlds, introduced ghost houses, didn't utilize many of the classic level/world environments introduced before, replaced toad houses and mini-games with the Switch Palaces and bonus game acquired by getting stars at the end of each level...
It also somehow took until this game for the series to actually have visible checkpoints.
It's something I didn't notice until way after I first played it, because SMW was my first SMB game.

Super Mario World was truly Mario's perfection, every next games was totally based on SMW, with the branched world, spin jump, Koopa's being bipedal, Bonus worlds, etc.
In fact, I could say that every next Mario game was a downgrade of SMW, becaude they eliminate the verticality and secrets of almost every level.
And the same can be said of Super Mario 64, being 3D Mario perfection and only surpassed by the actual improvement Super Mario Odyssey.

5:05 tbf, more of the same, but harder is a perfectly sensible way to build a sequel.
it does point to something interesting, though, because it's a Famicom Disk System game. So it's effectively a standalone expansion pack and it's job is to sell the FDS to people who've already played Mario Bros. It also uses the unique features of the FDS to effectively be much cheaper than a "true" sequel.
It's this interweaving of the game with the features of the hardware platform that goes a long way to keeping Mario relevant.
