    i think what a lot of podcasters dont realize is the sm7b is a great mic for singing because the capsule is set back in the grill helps with the proximity effect. Yes the sm7b is used in radio but also for recording music, vocal singing ect. The other mics sound great for speaking especially for the price.

    • @DarkenedCyrus
      @DarkenedCyrus  Год назад +14

      While I agree, your statement means that all you need to do is backup a bit from the other microphones and achieve the same effect.
      What a big plus for the SM7B for music production to talk about is the extended recording range for sounds beyond 20khz, like many other mics have. Some budget mics might stop at 16khz

      @@DarkenedCyrus To me the two microphones you are reviewing that are made by the same manfacturer have too high of a pitch and are sharp to the ear. I can also tell you are equalizing them instead of straight across the board flat with no equalization due to the robotic overtone when you are talking through them. To me the one mic that is similar to the mv7 sounds better than both the k688 and the am8. Also I didn't notice any mention, do any of the other 3 mics have the built in filter switches that the sm7b has? The other concept to think about here is it still place a factor of the speaker's natural voice as some microphones will sound better than others for different people speaking into them. For the person starting out I would definitley take the FDUCE SL40 even based on you and your brother's voice, though I'd have to check if they have some type of shock mount that would work for it as that was the only thing that concerned me about it.

    On XLR, the SM7B stands head and shoulders above the others. The other mics had very noticeable echo, whereas the SM7B didn't (probably down to its better noise rejection and how it deals with space). USB-wise, these mics sounded very good (the apps definitely help), but that handling noise is not great (boom arms for the win!).

      Thank you, I was listening to the first three thinking ok yea not too bad, bit middy, bit harsh, nothing some signal chain can't fix, and then the Shure was tested and the context was set and my previous feelings were confirmed, no they don't sound anything like it or anywhere near as good. That being said for $57...or $80....eh, really not bad. Handling noise made me cringe also, I doubt that would be much better on a boom. But i agree pretty much entirely with your breakdown, including the change to USB was actually a big improvement.

      That's really the whole point of the SM7, it doesn't sound amazing on everyone but it's a tight sounding mic and it minimizes room sound. It's been used on a lot of records when the recording studio has a less than ideal recording room or vocal booth. Or when you need very little room sound because you know you're going to compress the hell out of it later.

No average person will be able to notice a difference, they even might think this sounds better, it really does come down to preference at the end of the day once something sounds crisp. It's got XLR cable if you want to get something like the wave XLR to make it do even more and then you can add your own VST's to the mic so you can practically make it sound however you'd like.

      No one should care about handling noise on a mic that goes on an arm and can also be shock mounted if you *really* need it.

    • @skorpers
      @skorpers Год назад

      @@CluelessHooman That's the same on every single mic. Every content creator that tries to say otherwise doesn't understand how microphones work.
      If you want me to elaborate I would be more than happy to. The TLDR is every mic with a cardioid pattern is so similar to another that background noise rejection from specific mics is a myth. And yes Condensers, Dynamics and Ribbons all have the same noise rejection. Patterns and frequency response are the only things that matter, and they can't be much different than each other.

    • @CluelessHooman
      @CluelessHooman Год назад

Sorry if this is too much to ask but I've gone through two mics so far and got them based on reviews but I'm not satisfied with their level of noise rejection. They're both condensers with a cardioid pattern and with the same frequency. One's a "gamer" brand while the other is a Rode. Rode somehow has better noise rejection though that might be somehow of a bias to me since it's more expensive than the other one lol

      @mousbleu a $350 upcharge for a shock mount justifies it? Don’t get me wrong, I still use the SM7B almost daily, but justifying it just for handling noise alone isn’t the best call. The Rode PodMic for $99 also doesn’t have handling noise with its built in shock mount.

    I'm not 100% certain that its not just my headphones, but I could hear some very faint interference noise during all XLR mic testing in this video. I only noticed because when you switched to USB on the mics that support it, the interference noise was noticeably absent. Might be something wrong with your interface? Not totally sure but I figured I would mention it. Great video though!

      Thank you! Every mic will react different to each voice, so I can’t speak specifically for your voice. That being said, I think the FDUCE is a great mic if you can use it as XLR and add a compressor so that you don’t clip on your loud sections

    so for the shure a cloudlifter is reccomended because i as a music producer can recognize that you had the gain on your interface really high as u were talking very low and therefore u can here the radio type sound in the recording and also just a tip u can modify the highs and lows kn the shure to match your voice, for example if you have a deep voice with a lot of bass turn up the highs and turn down the lows ect..

    • @DarkenedCyrus
      @DarkenedCyrus  Год назад +3

      I think this reinforces the point here. Now a 400$ microphone needs a $100 cloud lifter and a good preamp, which can cost 100+ depending on the interface.
      600$+ when a 50$ microphone can sound close to it.

    I will preface this by saying that I don't much or anything about audio, but I have had my sm7b for almost a year now, and maybe I'm just really dumb.. I have had it will the go xlr, and now have it with the elgato wave xlr because no matter WHAT I did with the xlr levels, the gain was so low... but I have honestly never understood or gotten the hang of the sm7b. It never sounds as good as everyone else makes it sound. And I feel like it's soooo sensitive to the point of everything interfering with it. I just found out have been having a high ringing sound for MONTHS without realizing because a key light on my desk was interfering! I have never had such issues with mics before EVER!
    I thought the new mic in question sounded the best out of all of them, especially with usb-c! Save yourself the 400 dollars unless you're a professional who knows how to get the most out of the sm7b. Super disappointed by that mic, and now I wanna sell it.

    I just watched both of your videos, this one and the Fifine K688 video. I am so close to buying one of these to replace my condenser Yeti (I just don't have a good soundproofed room). My question for you is- if I have this on a mic arm (was eyeing the Elgato low profile arm) and I want to move it around, will it have the "handling noise" that you mentioned? I haven't had a mic on an arm yet but I know I move around a lot and imagine I will be adjusting it all the time. Also I am curious about your thoughts on if either of the Fifine mics you tried would be good for vocals?

    • @DarkenedCyrus
      @DarkenedCyrus  Год назад +1

      The AM8 will have some handling noise, but the K688 has a shock mount and it performs awesome. Practice care and don’t pull it around by the microphone, but the arm itself and you shouldn’t have any issues (I have multiple streams on Twitch you can reference with the mic)
      As for vocals, it will perform great if you like the initial sound. I do think it will need some of the 1-8khz pulled out if you are a higher singing voice (tenor and above), but seeing as it performs close to the SM7B and is EQ’d out of the box, it’s a great starting point.
