I feel like the price of the skin is one thing, but the NAME BEHIND the skin they represent for. Faker never uses skin intentionally, and they put that $500 skin on the person who doesn't use a skin.
$600 Ahri Skin: -Expensive -Can be taken away by riot at any time -ceases to exist when not in game $300 Ahri satute: -Cheaper -physical -can fit into a jar
The fact that a statue (A physical Item you can actually touch.) cost 200$ less then the Digital items speaks volumes to how absurd this price point is.
I caught on to the ban ahri in protest train pretty early on but I didn't know the original idea came from the ahrimains sub themselves lol, honestly respect all the players who care enough to ban their own mains/onetricks
Yeah, maybe after a year of +20% ban rate... Brand still isn't nerfed even though he shreds tanks. Akali is still an annoying piece of shit to play against, with no nerfs in sight.
And if it gave you stuff for all the other riot games then it would be ok. A special valorant weapon skin combo and banner and stuff, ahri skin for lor and bird and card back and icon and little legend, tft with a special bord and little legend, wild rift with the skin and icon and background. It would feel better as your buying it for all the games and not just one

They really didn't. The banrate didn't even go above 25% in a week and is now going down. As expected the "boycott" failed and all it did was being a minor nuisance at best.
I feel bad for Faker. He wanted to have his own Ahri skin for so long, and now that he finally got it in the most spectacular way possible... it's been completely ruined.
Why feel bad for him? He accepted the contract terms knowing what Riot would do and also he will receive a lot of money, even a luxury car. He just care about Korean audience.

I’m seeing an Ahri ban almost every game, and I play a lot with my friends, so it’s definitely common. One time Ahri got through it wasn’t the skin, but they got spam pinged anyway lmao
Been about the experience in normals. Been an Ahri main since she released and when I was trying to do norms if she wasn't outright banned by my team or the enemies, I was flamed all game for playing her, even though I'm not using the skin. Champ select lobbies pretty much looked like people accusing me of having the skin and flaming me, and then once the game started people calling me poor for not having the skin and just trying to grief constantly. Had to start exclusively playing in ranked just to enjoy the game, people be wild lol. Really made me hate the Ahri mains reddit.
It's bc they have a weird culture where spending thousands on a game is actually proof of your hardcore dedication and how much you deserve rewards for putting in so much. Instead of what it is, a gambling addiction
They run on emotions over there. That's the reason idols are such a major thing there. It's why those idols have SO many problems with unrequited attachments from their fans. Fastest way to sabotage logical thinking (without drugs or booty) is to overload emotional responses.
fun fact, here in south america (specifically Las, not speaking for Brasil nor Lan) Ahri has a 21% ban rate, even though NO ONE WOULD ACTUALLY BUY A SKIN WITH THAT PRICE LMAO I'm from argentina, 500 usd is like half a year's salary to me
Korean here, the general mindset seems to be that people are more convinced with the 500$ price tag due to the quality and effort put into the skin (Special border, animated banner, voiceline, special cutscene at start of game, .etc) However, the biggest persuasion being that obviously, Faker, as a Korean Legend, a lot of streamers and professionals alike in Korea are buying the skins and praising it. Forming a societal norm about paying 500$ for a skin because what you are getting is 'worth it'. While many in Korea still believes that 500$ pricetag for a skin is still too much, I see lot less of that narrative than I do see here in NA. Not to mention the current culture of flexing their wealth most prevalent in China and Korea, along with factor of FOMO that forms around the skin. *Edit:* Forgot to mention the most important reason being that Faker himself serves very important role in not only League, but the entire Korean Esports post SC era. *Even Korean President issuing a statement congratulating Faker's 4th Worlds trophy on social media.* Think about Soccer, having Ronaldo or Messi being your country's home team is ought to have more merch sale/ support from their home country, like buying team merch, jersey .etc in my personal belief, since Korea possesses strongest worldwide competitiveness in League, the audience in Korea are buying the skin with similar, if not the same logic as buying player merch of sort. Out of respect, and pride for the world's greatest player belonging in home soil. Though, I am not sure Faker himself had any say in even creation of Ahri skin as Todays T1 vs KDF game 2, faker still remains to use default skin for his Ahri pick.
Yeah, but Asia already has a real bad problem when it comes to spending money on games. It seems very normalized in Asia as a whole to just accept egregious mtx. Asia's populace is a huge reason for gaming's decline in quality, the other being the political zealots of the west.

What baffles me, and boils my blood, about this is that if they priced that skin at $20 they'd blow the roof off their coffers; instead they market it to a 0.01% at $500. 180,000,000+ players in 2022. @ $500 marketed to 0.01% (1,800,000) = $900,000,000 @ $20 marketed to 50% (900,000,000) = $1,800,000,000

It's wild that a professionally painted resin statue costs 200 dollars less than a fucking digital skin. As someone who's pretty deep in the model painting community, having done some commissions myself, I can say that the Ahri statue is very reasonably priced. As far as professionally painted 1/6th scale statues go, it's not extremely impressive to look at, but it doesn't need to be. All of the facial markings seem to be blended extremely well, but aside from that LoL characters don't really even have any volumetric highlighting or any other fancy techniques going for them that would take a long time to imitate, so it doesn't need that sort of stuff. Sure, you can point at companies like Weta Workshop and say those guys sell insane statues where the cost doesn't match the paintjob, but the rest of the world charges far more for these sorts of things than Weta does.

Personally, I feel like the ban wagon against Ahri is actually a big mistake, because people in the league community or just in general that plays league of legends either PC or Wild Rift, are not banning the skin and protesting the skin alone and what it represents. But they're banning the champion that people ( a lot of people ) love to play in matches. So they're hurting the champion instead of just going after the skin, which is the main problem, the price point and what the price tag the skin really means. How its tarnishing a VERY, very proud professional and legendary league of legends forever times champion. So instead of thinking with their wallets, they just choose to hurt the champion instead as retaliation and revolt against how much ONE skin cost and the real meaning behind the price tag. And their always hurting other players that like/have Ahri as their main and just wanna have fun playing her but CANT do to an unreasonable ban on the CHAMPION AND NOT THE SKIN ALONE.
One thing I’ve learned in my Economics classes is that businesses don’t actually know how much something is worth. All they can/will do is put it out on the market and people will determine its value with their dollar. If it doesn’t sell, people either don’t want it or don’t want it at that price.
It is very naive (to say the least) to believe that the money from this extortion is being used to build things for the community, Riot always had the budget and competent professionals to do it long before, but they chose to fire them and use the money in that stupid streaming project. I used to be a collector of Ahri and other characters too, purely motivated by the lore. that was the only thing that kept me in the game after the SoL event and even after the constant neglect of the lore in and out of the game. It's still a 100% free game, that you can decide to support, if you feel like it has provided you entertainment for years on years. For me there are three levels to this issue 1. 500$ skin is too much for something like a ingame cosmetic. But hey, luxurious things also exist IRL. 2. They based it on someone who never really appreciated skins. It feels off, but hey, also kinda funny. 3. They turned an honor of a player into a marketing thing, and that's the worst imo. If the skin just existed in a corner of the shop, great! But the fact that I am confronted with the cosmetics all the time just doesnt make me feel like they honor the player itself, but that they just want the profit. When a company treats you badly as a player you're supposed to boycott the company, not one specific champion on their game. This boycott was bound to fail, getting 100% banrate on ahri ANYWHERE would be a challenge and maintaining it for long enough to make riot change anything would be impossible. Does anyone not remember when redditors tried to protest and all reddit did was endure the community's anger until the hype around it died and just kept their decision? This is just another step riot has taken in a path they've been clearly following for a while. When this skin makes them good money they will do this to other champions, whales will keep giving them money and they will continue to not care about the actual game until league dies of greed unless the community learns how to protest properly, by just not playing the game.
Is this it? Is this the sign that there is still hope for the forsaken, those who play this game? Is this the era of them putting past grivences, wounds suffered when they invaded the sacred jungle of others? Dove head first into enemy territory, right under the watchful eyes of ancient beasts, stone monuments protecting the descendant of old, showing such bravery only to be denounced and marked forever as intfeeders? the general mindset seems to be that people are more convinced with the 500$ price tag due to the quality and effort put into the skin (Special border, animated banner, voiceline, special cutscene at start of game, .etc)
However, the biggest persuasion being that obviously, Faker, as a Korean Legend, a lot of streamers and professionals alike in Korea are buying the skins and praising it.
*Even Korean President issuing a statement congratulating Faker's 4th Worlds trophy on social media.*
Think about Soccer, having Ronaldo or Messi being your country's home team is ought to have more merch sale/ support from their home country, like buying team merch, jersey .etc
in my personal belief, since Korea possesses strongest worldwide competitiveness in League, the audience in Korea are buying the skin with similar, if not the same logic as buying player merch of sort. Out of respect, and pride for the world's greatest player belonging in home soil.
Though, I am not sure Faker himself had any say in even creation of Ahri skin as Todays T1 vs KDF game 2, faker still remains to use default skin for his Ahri pick.

Did you take into account the fact that they currently also provide cheaper options for others to buy? If you add the revenue from that, it's not easy to estimate how true this is?

2. They based it on someone who never really appreciated skins. It feels off, but hey, also kinda funny.
3. They turned an honor of a player into a marketing thing, and that's the worst imo. If the skin just existed in a corner of the shop, great! because at the end of the day theyre mad they cant afford it. some people can, and riot will continue to make them. They can all cry while the money they raise goes towards new hires and improving the game.
@@OkayDuhuhud Lmao the money goes to stockholders as dividends. None of it actually "improves" the game.

Heres the thing. In a few days it sold 2000 times in korea.
Thats 2 million dollars for riot with only 2000 sales. Im happy to boycot. But Korea isnt doing it and in the end it wont matter. That 2 million was from only a few days after the skins released, how much do you think it will be with a few weeks or months? The damage is done and I suspect they will do this again with the next hall of legend skin, Uzi's Vayne or whoever else it ends up being.
It was within 4 hours
exactly and plenty of us in the west bought it too, can't wait for the next skins!
