Download Whatsapp on your phone, Latin America run on it.
Use Google translate prior and save phrases you'll need quick at hand and try to learn some basic before you go, I use Duolingo.
Download the map in the area you travel to in case you lose cell coverage and or data
Beware of your surroundings at all times, people can and will take advantage of you, follow me, I'll show you the right way to move in unfamiliar areas.
Keep your flashy items at home, dont make yourself a target.
Pre-arrange your transportation to your Resort/Hotel/Airbnb/Hostle, dont take a taxi, they will try and rip you off, use uber and listen to where they want to meet you, its safer that way, trust me.
