This song came out a few weeks before my husband passed away. He took my entire soul with him that day. Every day I lashed out, in a fury, begged, cried and screamed for him to just come back to me. It exhausted me. After I was finally able to pick myself up off the floor, this song was every emotion I felt inside. It’s still hard to listen to, but, now I’m able to remember him with a smile, too.

Whilst my own experience with this song is not as sad as most peoples experiences i dunno i feel like ill share, i had a girlfriend in America when i was a teenager and i lived in the UK, so every line pertained to us when i missed her. Looking at her house on google maps just to feel close, dreaming i could teleport or win a lot of money and just turn up at her door seeing her smile. Hauntingly beautiful and gives me chills to this day. The raw human emotion in this song is palpable.

I find the map and draw a straight line
Over rivers, farms, and state lines
The distance from here to where you'd be
    It's only finger-lengths that I see
I touch the place where I'd find your face
My fingers in creases of distant dark places
I hang my coat up in the first bar
There is no peace that I've found so far
    The laughter penetrates my silence
As drunken men find flaws in science
    Their words mostly noises
    Ghosts with just voices
    Your words in my memory
    Are like music to me
I'm miles from where you are
I lay down on the cold ground
I, I pray that something picks me up
And sets me down in your warm arms
After I have travelled so far
We'd set the fire to the third bar
We'd share each other like an island
    Until exhausted, close our eyelids
    And dreaming, pick up from
The last place we left off
    Your soft skin is weeping
A joy you can't keep in
I'm miles from where you are
I lay down on the cold ground
And I, I pray that something picks me up
And sets me down in your warm arms
And miles from where you are
I lay down on the cold ground
And I, I pray that something picks me up

+Derek Boal It's not 6 years old. This was uploaded to RUclips in 2009, but released in the album 'eyes open' in 2006. So I was 6 when I listened to it.

    Lyrics
I find the map and draw a straight line
Over rivers, farms and state lines
The distance from here to where you'd be
    It's only finger-lengths that I see
    I touch the place
    Where I'd find your face
    My fingers increases
    Of distant dark places
I hang my coat up in the first bar
There is no peace that I've found so far
    The laughter penetrates my silence
As drunken men find flaws in science
    Their word's mostly noises
    Ghosts with just voices
    Your words in my memory
    Are like music to me
I'm miles from where you are
I lay down on the cold ground
I, I pray that something picks me up
And sets me down in your warm arms
After I have traveled so far
We'd set the fire to the third bar
We'd share each other like an island
    Until exhausted, close our eyelids
    And dreaming, pick up from
The last place we left off
    Your soft skin is weeping
A joy you can't keep in
I'm miles from where you are
I lay down on the cold ground
And I, I pray that something picks me up
And sets me down in your warm arms
And miles from where you are
I lay down on the cold ground
And I, I pray that something picks me up
And sets me down in your warm arms

Back in 2011 I was living in Dunedin. Walking home from work in the cold winter nights I would listen to this song missing someone I’d lost to the other side of the world a couple of years before. 11 years later and I’ve still not seen them again.

I’m so glad that people are talking about long distance relationships and even breakups, because I thought reading through the comments that I was the only one where this song was for a long distance relationship/breakup.
I am sorry for other people’s losses and I can understand that the song can have one or two meanings. I actually ran away from the town where we were born and where I met my first/puppy love/childhood sweetheart, we have known each other for 20 years, but had a breakup and stopped speaking for 10 years. I messaged him out of the blue the other day and we had a heart to heart, it’s strange the connections we have with people.

This was mine and Eddie's song. 12 years of happiness 13 years together. He went back to his old mistress vodka and she took him in October 2019 suddenly. Just before his 50th bday. I miss him so much. Every day, I love this song but this is the 1st time I've been able to hear it since he died. It hurts but I have an elastic heart. See you on the other side my love. See you on the other side.

This is one of those songs... where you feel like you're the only one who could *really*understand what it really means... when you can never be with the one person you love more than everyone else.

Epitome of a long-distance relationship. I'm in one at the moment, we've been together 3 years. I didn't see him for 9 months because of covid! Thankfully we've caught up twice recently. But this song makes me think of him
