Some of the greatest lyrics ever written hands down. Especially when your Dad raised you on Prine , you bought him this album for his birthday. 20 years later hes gone and every time you hear this song you cry but you play it just because of that.
I first heard John Prine in 1991 when I was 21 years old, sitting in Saudi Arabia during Operation Desert Shield / Storm. This album is so nostalgic for me. I can rarely get through this album in its entirety without breaking into tears at some point.
This is one of his greatest songs. I’m from Illinois and his ability to capture the feel of summer is tearjerking. There use to not be this version online. Thank you to Jody and Fiona and everyone involved for posting this version.
I moved from MT and lived in KY for 10 years. (long ago.) The feel of summer you describe was a revelation for this Northern girl from the dry and windy plains. John made it real in this song.
We were living in Corpus Christi Texas and Richard and Ginger's house was like a Mexican home and he was a real freak about all of his cuckoo clocks Donnie help me finish my first song and I remember him and Richard sitting out on the porch when his dad died I drink whiskey all night on the porch
I was 17 at the time and it was 1980 and it was the year my mother left me on my own and went back to Illinois and I was staying with a married couple named Richard and ginger and this man showed up one day in his name was Donnie
And I remember there was no air conditioning in the house at the time and it was just blaze and hot in the house how we open the windows in the headlights are going by going to the house
Yeah my mother told me many years listen to this song it's wrote about you so turns out the man was Donnie fritts he was Kris kristofferson's longtime organ piano player I didn't know this at the time
But he move did me and him was living there with Richard and ginger I had just started playing guitar about a year before that I was trying to finish my first song I wrote called Traveling Man and one night I was trying to figure out the last cord change weather to go to a g or D and Donnie was there and he's like dude go to the G and then back to the D I like okay cool and it fit perfectly
It came so clear to me after hearing the song about almost 10 times and listening to the lyrics yep that was that night Donny Fritz help me finish my first song I was 17 and Corpus Christi Texas
As a JP fan wayyyy back, I enjoy his voice and changes as the years passed by.
Oh boy!! So nice to hear this old friend. Wisdom and nonsense in his own raspy voice-a gift so sweet and heartfelt.
Yes it is! I love his voice and wisdom as well!!! He's already missed by this long- time fan❣

This is my favorite version of this song.... Also one of the best he ever did in my opinion.
He also did a great version with Josh Ritter
I miss this man so I still cry hearing him sing .sing loud in heaven John prone !
When he passed it was ages before I could even think of listening to his music without melting down.
Thanks for posting. Every song is a jewel.

I only found John Prine this year but he speaks to me so personally and the mastery of the guitar makes me very happy💕👌🏻🙏
