  • I recently saw The Black Dahlia Murder Live, and can confirm they were using 5150 Iconic Amps! But they had them paired with EVH 5150iii cabinets. Is this the secret sauce to unlocking the 5150 Iconics true potential??

      As for the Iconic cabs MDF is carcinogenic as it contains formaldehyde. I try to stay clear of products like that. So the EVH 5150III cab is the wiser choice for those that are concerned with that type of issue.

    • @KaddysJamKave
      @KaddysJamKave Год назад

      @@watcherzero000 That's not a serious risk man... if you want to avoid formaldehyde then you better stop eating apples, bananas, grapes, plums; vegetables like onions, carrots, and spinach; and even meats like seafood, beef, and poultry. Also our bodies naturally make formaldehyde... unless you're sawing into MDF on a daily basis for years on end and breathing in the particles... I wouldn't worry about a cab made with MDF. In saying that, the Iconic cabinet sounds pretty awful compared to the EVH cabs :D

    I just played a gig with the iconic head into a 1960a cab, but I have two g12evh and two g12t-75s. It’s a pretty rad setup. Also have a 5150iii cab with that same speaker combo (basically swapped two speakers from each cab to the other). Had the evh speaker mic’d up. Anyway our sound was killer. Long story short I think Euge Valovirta hit the nail on the head in his video on the iconic - if you can’t make this amp sound good look in the mirror for the problem.

  • @jamesbrown7468

    Sounds great. Yes, the $1149 all baltic birch cab with UK EVH Celestions sounds better than the $599 plywood baffle MDF cabinet with the custom cheaper Chinese Celestions. BUT for $599 the Iconic 412 is a nice sounding cabinet that’s 14lbs lighter and still full size with casters. I think it would be interesting to see what you could do with the extra graphic and the Iconic cabinet. It definitely has more low mids by design.

    • @TaylorDanley

      Hey James, thanks for popping by! I agree, the 10 band really helps out quite a bit, especially cleaning up the high end with speakers that might be overly aggressive there when paired with this amp (v30s for example).

    • @wootks
      @wootks Год назад +3

      Yeah it's impressive for the price that you get a "full sized" 4x12. A Mesa 4x12 these days is 2.5x the price of the Iconic cab. That leaves plenty of money to go track down a few "golden era" v30's and still be ahead.

    • @jamesbrown7468
      @jamesbrown7468 Год назад +10

      @@remibrunetti7038 I based the clean channel on the newer 6L6 50w 5150 III (with the concentric crunch gain and volume knobs), which was the cleanest one of the III’s. I think the Iconic clean breaks up a little better once you do start driving it. With the Overdrive button on it’s like the 50w 6L6 5150 III Blue channel but with a little more gain so it overlaps the gain of the red channel. Remember that Ed always used his volume knob to clean up further.

    Thankfully the banter from the uninformed on these amps seems to have fallen by the wayside recently and people understand they're fantastic amps, regardless of topology

    • @K707OR30
      @K707OR30 Год назад +7

      Agreed. And even on the topology front, it has a solid state phase inverter as I recall and that’s why it gets this rap for being “solid state hybrid.” A solid state phase inverter will have little to no effect on the overall tone yet everyone says they can hear it. Tons of “all tube” amps have solid state phase inverters and rectifiers not to mention all the diodes and op amps etc that literally hundreds of other amps have and no one gives them shit for being “kinda solid state.” all jcm2000s have solid state rectifiers and tons of diodes on the boards for example, never heard anyone call those solid state hybrid. I’m happy for James and this amp overall because it got unfairly annihilated by the uninformed before it was even released and despite that it continues to prove to be a great amp.
      * I edited my original comment about the PI affecting tone. It could affect tone, but if all is functioning correctly probably not. honestly there’s a case to be made that a solid state PI is preferable to a tube PI with how often tubes crap out or go microphonic with modern tube stock. Brand new 12ax7s are microphonic all the time anymore. If the thing that’s responsible for ensuring you have equal but opposite waveforms for the push/pull function of you power amp can’t go microphonic or otherwise crap out because it’s not a tube, that’s a win in my opinion.

The only thing the amps needs is a preamp and maybe an EQ to get rid of any top end fizz and push some of the mids. More gain than you’d ever need (I have mine at 5 and it’s like THATS ENOUGH) and it has a boost, the burn switch is supposed to make it more in line with old 5150s and a little flubbier but I’m no tone chasing whore so they both sound good to me.

      The Iconic is a well made amp for the price it's offered at in 2023. James Brown (who also posted on this video) who designed the Iconic and OG 5150 is very open on the internet about the design decisions that were made for the Iconic. Most people freak out that V1 is solid state. It hardly matters and is a smart decision to hit its very low price target. He delivered the very best amp he could at a very affordable price. That seems to always have been a design goal of the 5150. Give users an amp that used to be a boutique custom at a price a normal guitar player can afford.

    Was around when 5150’s first came out and rocked one in the 90’s. Recently came across a used Block Letter in a store and nostalgia kicked in hard but I’d really grown out of that sound over the years. More a Mark Mesa and Marshall player now. Played it, trying to love it but it’s just a darker, mushy tone with Gibson’s, which is what I play (a lot better with bolt on neck or thinner/brighter sounding guitars). Might even work for Gibson with an EQ in the front. Anyhoo, the store was a EVH dealer and they had an Iconic, so I thought why not. It was so much better for me than the OG. Brighter, tighter. Decent clean channel and much better crunch. Noise gate works great and the OG was very noisy. Iconic was just very dial-able, where the OG has it’s sound and you just make it slightly brighter or thicker. Now the Iconic can’t really do a convincing classic rock sound but it’s range of gain from clean to crunch and heavy is a lot more flexible than the OG. Gotta say, I would get the Iconic over an OG. Would love a smaller form factor head of it at 40-50 watts.

    Honestly, while it might be unrelated to the video itself, I was fully on board to try one out when I found out that the preamp had solid state tech to help the two preamp tubes in the preamp section.
    As I’m sure I’ve mentioned before I heavily prefer the sound of solid state over the sound of all tube amplification. There’s something about solid state clipping that makes a guitar tone sound more “present” or “there” in comparison to an all tube preamp, and I feel like solid state technology in conjunction with tube technology can really help with bringing out more clarity and presence in a guitar tone. What I’ve been curious about however is how the assistance of solid state technology in the preamp section works with the clean channel, or wether or not the solid state clipping is disengaged when you’re using the clean channel of the amplifier and if it’s just the two preamp tubes working together for the clean channel.

      I’ll obviously defer to James Brown if he comments and he’s discussed it elsewhere but the Iconic I believe has a solid state phase inverter instead of a tube doing that job. At this price point costs needed to be met somewhere and that was one spot to do it. But the actual preamp gain staging is done by the two 12ax7s, only the phase inversion of the AC signal is done in solid state. Like I said in another post, hundreds of other amps using solid state circuitry or clipping diodes or solid state rectification get a pass because people somehow don’t know it, but this amp gets shit on unfairly for specifically where it’s used? Doesn’t make sense. It’s a dope amp, full stop. If you haven’t played one then go try it out.

    • @Stretchwreckedem469
      @Stretchwreckedem469 Год назад

      @@K707OR30 I didn’t think that phase inversion was typically done with tubes, I figure phase inversion was always done with solid state tech as is rectification on a lot of modern amplifiers. I kinda wonder exactly how it affects the tone in comparison to tube phase inversion or if there’s any tonal variation at all. From a lot of the demos I’ve heard from the Iconic it sounds a lot clearer and a lot more present from all of the demos that I heard, which I figured had to do with there being a solid state clipping circuit somewhere in the preamp section. I have a Randall RG80 combo that I plug into a 4x12 and the tone from that amp has always come out sounding so crystal clear that you can play whole chords and hear each note ring out perfectly, and I could hear a similar tonal character coming from the Iconic so I figured that to be the case as well.
      Nonetheless I hope to give this amp a go if I ever have the opportunity to try one out in the future, it sounds massive for the price point!

      Both channels have a high voltage transistor stage in front, which is tweaked to match our 50w 5150 III amps. The clean gain structure matches that two, but you might be hearing the extra topend from the Presence taper being quicker than most 5150’s. We changed that on the 50w and this one due to popularity. Ed used to use the term clean to mean it had sufficient amount of that quality of sizzly highs

    i just love your real gear stuff here! the biggest problem with this amp was that is has just been so much overhyped and reviewed in circles over and over again all day long on every gear based youtube channel for weeks that you just got diarrhea, earcancer and eyebleeds from just reading the topic after a while 😂💩.. the added harshness that comes along the gain button is just because: the added gain stage is a diode, not a tube! a no go for epic tube guys and a nice used 6505(+) for the same amount of money or even less is a better option for most of the oldschool 5150 fans like me imo ..peace 🙏

    • @jamesbrown7468
      @jamesbrown7468 Год назад

      No diode distortion. The Burn switch actually throttles down the tube’s gain when it’s OFF. I set it up so you could get similar to the thicker mooshy attack of the first 5150….which Ed wanted tighter when I designed the combo in the early 90’s. All the 5150’s after that are tighter. Sorry you don’t like the amp, after I’m sure you tried one.
