Funny thing... Being a music teacher, the kids I meet all know the guitar music from the 60's & 70's because of "Guitar Hero" , but they never heard of Leon. Needless to say, they are usually blown away when they 1st hear him. It is one of my great joys in life, to turn kids on to such high quality music. RIP.
It's like people who hear the name Sigmund Freud know it right away but ask them if they ever heard of Carl Jung. Often times you will get a blank look. Leon Russell was a true super star who had a long career. There wasn't much the man didn't know about how to navigate his lane.
Enjoy it....we wont see the likes of Leon Russell agian in this lifetime.Thankfully hes still playing.I always thought leon and jj cale were the american equvalent of the beatles...They both wrote/played/recorded amazing music...You okies shook the world..changed it forever
Masterful New Orleans stylings on the piano, great vocals...always a playful, laconic undertone. The complete package! He left us lots of beauty from those times and so glad he got some props and help from Elton in his latter days.
In the later part of July in 1970 I got an emergency leave from the Army to go home to Dyersville IA, my grandma had passed away. From CO Springs I caught a connecting flight in Waterloo IA to Dbq IA and sat next to Leon, his girlfriend singer, another singer and his drummer in the airport. Very nice to me, when we boarded I sat next to Leon's drummer for the short flight to Dbq. They were headlining the Wadena Rock Festival.
I was at the concert for bangladesh evening show ,the recorded one .Leon was the highlight of the evening musically. It was a historic show ,the first benefit show of its kind to help a serious cause ! His band made up almost half the players !
I saw Leon at The Fillmore East in 1971...being The Headliner he went on last at about 1:30 -2:00 am ( yes that was the Fillmore for ya) and at 4:00 am Bill Graham comes out on stage and asks Leon when is he going to be done. Leon then asks his band and everyone in the audience if their tired yet and we all shout NO !!! Leon turns to Bill and answers "I don't know"...Graham tells Leon to make sure to lock up and tells us all to get home safe. We walked out of The Fillmore and the sun had come up...it was 6:45 am. I will never forget that night Leon Russell played for over 4 hours for us. RIP Leon...I love you.
the most incredible , Robert Johnson's spirit cover i've ever heard with tempo respected, Robert 's winkin'the eye up there and Leon , you is a true Genius , sensible , talent's sharing Man !
What a great kitchen-table song. I'm an acoustic-guitar playing kitchen-table' player, and proud of it! I Love "A Song For You", so much! Leon Russell is a Master-Musician, to my ear. 🇨🇦✌🏻🎶🎸♥️
This is one of the best video's of Leon I've seen. I've heard this song a million times by a million people and I never get tired of it. Thanks to leon and Robert Johnson. I wish he and Leon did a duet. Can you image... Wow. and thank you for posting.
He´s just 29 in this video. I never thought, that young man could look so awesome and hot with a grey hair . !! And during a five-six years later he became totaly white. Just incredible.... :-)
Leon Russell has a great "sound', combining Blues, soul, and some boogie woogie, to add some scintillating spice to the mix. It creates a great, sensual party atmosphere.
After jamming with Leon at Ed Bingham's Ranch in Tulsa in 76 for several weeks I was forever influenced by his style. To this day up until I retired 3 years ago due to the pandemic, someone would always shout out "Do some Leon" and I'd swing into Cocker's version of "The Letter" and "Come On Into My Kitchen" and some other Leon classics. The rest of the set would be all Leon. Many thanks for the influences and cool times out in Tulsa.
It's a sad day. Thank you for all the yrs of amazing music. You were my favorite. May your new journey find you with peace and all the love there is. I send my love in my energy to you.....RIP
Used to watch Leon back in the day, 70, 71, 72, the "Festival" concerts were great! Loved to watch him jump up on top of his piano and play the guitar, lotta love in the air!
Yeah, sad day for sure but he'll be jammin' when I get there with all my other friends that have gone before. I am sure today they were saying Leon brother what took you so long we been waiting for you!
I used to own one of Leon’s beautiful oak upright player pianos (have pics), ex was an artist~musician who painted a wall mural at Cardo’s Cadillac on 15th street ‘Cherrry Street’. They had Tulsa’s first frozen margarita machine and the best fried mushrooms, happy hour etc… Any people here from TTown who remember Cardo’s?😅 😻
Throughout this session, I keep seeing noticing the guy with big hair to the side of the piano banging his head to the music. How exciting it must have been to be literally in the middle of it all.
LOL!!! Wow he just said somebody's got a red Volkswagen out in the parking lot. Thats definitely not in the real song. How badass is that?! Leon russell is so smooth...
I would certainly agree that the Mad Dogs Tour in 1970 was Leon Russell's finest moment, without much doubt... but Leon was always a bit an enigmatic and mysterious creature, but a very talented pianist.... wasn't he??
Had to be there ~ Yes I.did leave with my lover's best friend ~ didn't get in trouble but then my best friend never came back ~ he was the one whom got away 💔
Here's to you Leon you are back on top Andd never quit Yulas Tock and Honky Tonk .... I'm so in love with you see you with the anggels I'm sure you are rocking ... youu are missed as we pass in your music to our children and children's children! 2:082:08 g

Richard Jean Thanks for this. You sound like a wonderful teacher. Leon was one of the best. Love him.

His voice, his piano playing, his presence, his hair. Love Leon!

When Leon passed it was the very first time I actually cried over us losing such a talent. I could listen to him all day ❤️
Thank you Elton John for rescuing Leon from the ditch we call life.
Coolest cat to ever wear shades and play a piano at the same time
ALSO STEVIE WONDER 2 COOL CATS ❤❤
add to dr. john, ray charles and a few others

He tore up this old Robert Johnson tune...Leon has a way of putting soul and heat into everything he does......Keep on going Leon!
I love You Claude "Leon" Russell Bridges!!! and I thank you so very much for your gift of music. XXOO

Great time to grow up . I don’t see that being allowed today because of some rule or regulations. Don’t fill free anymore.

Great story! Wish I was there.
i have loved this song forever.....and have loved leon to the moon and back............
We Okies are complaining about Sir Paul playing the BOK's fifth anniversary when we have a brilliant musician in our back yard. How good we have it.
He was just to cool... I would have gone to his kitchen and stayed..saw him multiple time in the 70's he left me speechless Love you Leon!
the most incredible , Robert Johnson's spirit cover i've ever heard with tempo respected, Robert 's winkin'the eye up there and Leon , you is a true Genius , sensible , talent's sharing Man !
Saw him this past summer in upstate NY-sad that he is not in good health--but his fans are Leon's forever.
My five year old grandson loves Leon too. Knows all the words to his songs.
Leon has always been master of the ivory keys and master of his heart of lyrics in space and time . with his life coming full circle !
What a great kitchen-table song. I'm an acoustic-guitar playing kitchen-table' player, and proud of it! I Love "A Song For You", so much! Leon Russell is a Master-Musician, to my ear.

I only saw him live in concert once but it was absolutely unforgettable!
Me too. It was 1970 or 71, so this time period. I was 15 and smitten.
Walked up on him at age 19 in ‘78, in a tiny club setting, had no idea who he was. Was 30ft away…whew!! 😅
He´s just 29 in this video. I never thought, that young man could look so awesome and hot with a grey hair . !! And during a five-six years later he became totaly white. Just incredible.... :-)
Known about this gentleman obviously, band I drum for playing 'this masquerade'. Gorgeous song.Going through Leon's back catalogue. I am in awe.
One of my all time favorite Leon performances. His piano playing defines GROOVE.
Leon Russell has a great "sound', combining Blues, soul, and some boogie woogie, to add some scintillating spice to the mix. It creates a great, sensual party atmosphere.

To be able to play the piano the way Leon does would be a dream come true for me..
After jamming with Leon at Ed Bingham's Ranch in Tulsa in 76 for several weeks I was forever influenced by his style. One of the great early blues songs.
Wow, I forgot how Leon could tickle those keys!
At the 1:30 mark, my Leon-to-English dictionary translates his "Oooh yeah" to "Damn, that was good. I sometimes even impress myself."
Uno de mis ídolos de mi juventud ahora tengo 72 años y muchos recuerdos de aquella epoca
This is an old Robert Johnson song from the early 30s. Music history.
Not my car, Leon. I was driving a blue pedal car in 1970!
BOOM
It took about one bar before Leon went up a few notes on piano, before I knew THIS was going to be good.... Robert Johnson Smiles On You Leon
love this dude forever !!!!
Throughout this session, I keep seeing noticing the guy with big hair to the side of the piano banging his head to the music. How exciting it must have been to be literally in the middle of it all.
