I never really reach the point in C:S where I would create the downtown, I either give up earlier or realize in panic that the downtown is needed and abort mission. This episode really makes me want to finally create one.
I'm the same. I have built lots of cities but just abandoned for a different idea on a different map when it came time to start a down town. not this time!
Not all cities need a downtown proper! You can make maps of smaller, interconnected communities, or a smaller city with more of a centre than a downtown. A little bit of density with parks and plazas spacing things out makes for a nice, European style smaller city or town.
You have quickly become one of my favourite cities builder and really have done a brilliant job of even teaching me all the mechanics of the game. You even got me through covid with a mega binge watch of all your past content. This city is looking so amazing for no mods and mod assets 😍
@Simmer Chell EGG is the undisputed master of Cities: Skylines aesthetics and balanced gameplay. I'm improving my cities with each iteration, thanks to him. We are all truly fortunate to have his level of expertise at our fintgertips🙏🏾👊🏾.
Wow! I have been playing this game (for years & years - loving it) all wrong. Thanks for showing me what its all about! I totally appreciate your time & effort. Actually, it was the way you approach terraforming that changed the way I view things -- which opened up the possibilities for me. Thank you!
This is the first video of yours I'm watching (I heard of you through CPP) and now I have to binge all your videos 😂👀 Love episodes focusing on road layout, it's something that's so important. Also love seeing a whole area pre-planned. I loved seeing how you use your highway and metro as like a "spine" of your city, built past the existing used infrastructure. Like a lot of people build train stations but don't put the rail out the other side until they need another station. I recognised the map instantly, Flabaliki did a 75-part series on it back when Mass Transit released and I've done a city on it too. Love how you kept the Stonehenge thing, when Flabaliki bulldozed it his comments were full of pain. Interestingly, you both chose to like, make the waterfront in the bay under the bridges a useful space - he did offices and a canal, you're using it for a ring-road. Love how you used that steep cliff part to line the ring-road. Gonna go back and watch the video where you built the residential area, I'm still figuring out how to terrace stuff like you showed. The way you ended your highway was really interesting, I'd never seen anyone recommend just putting it into a t-junction at-grade. The way you curved the two sides to different places to diffuse traffic is 😍. One suggestion though - since there's only two directions to turn off of it, might be better to have a two-lane highway piece where it joins the road? Unless one direction of turning is busy enough for two lanes of course. Subscribed, liked, shared with friends and will recommend, even to non-noobs downtown areas can be hard to get right.
This ep really highlights how everything you've (well, us noobs) been playing around with in the previous video regarding zoning, paths, roads etc. really came to shine. I can't wait to see this populated.
I went from playing games such as call of duty, gran turismo and dayz to city skylines and I've never looked back , definitely the most creative game I've ever played , would love to try it on pc
Yes! This is awesome. To address your questions, this is most certainly my kind of build. Just doing the road/transit layout was perfect for this episode and I'm thrilled you are including a ring road for the downtown. And yes, the walkability and public transport use in my city is phenomenal. As you've demonstrated, it's something you have to tend to from the start of the build and it really pays off. Even the quays are getting a good deal of traffic. They only differences I'm seeing is I think I have less bicyclists on the bike paths. I've got more bike roads, so maybe they are just more spread out? The other thing is, though my mass transit layout is virtually identical to yours, I get a bunch of tourists using their pocket cars to leave the campus stadium after a game. I get a ton that swarm up to the metro, but a large number still pop into their cars. I've got bus stops that are even closer than the metro, so not sure why so many are popping to cars. Anyway, I'm having so much fun with this series.
Thank you bro! Definitely sounds like your cyclist's will be more spread out if you have more bike roads than I do :) You could check their routes once they get off the metro, see where they're headed?
Oh I love a downtown network video, which means downtown is coming soon! Honestly love this series, when I start a new city deciding on what to do next is the struggle for me. I just follow this series along on a different map, cause I don't want to just copy what you do, and I haven't abandoned that city yet. :D Really love the aesthetic of the road with palm trees next to the beach, it's gonna look even more beautiful once there are cims and buildings around it. This map is so beautiful with its beaches it's a shame we don't have a modular beach stuff dlc, I just want my cims to go to the beach and actually do something there dammit. xD Love the video Egg! Also 1:40 lol.

Thank you for this video man. I just subscribed to your channel. I love this game but i always find it hard to create wonderful grids like yours, given that i have an imagination of a 2 year old
I think there's a lot of opportunity to make slip road exits from your ring road onto different downtown roads. In Seattle, the I-5 goes right by the downtown and has multiple ramps off the hwy right into the downtown. No big interchanges - just ramps of differing directions connecting with different downtown one-way roads. Good design actually.
Great build Egg! Echoing many other people here, I often struggle with downtown builds myself - I either never quite get there population wise, or I stuff it up big time. Definitely some good knowledge to be picked up here! 👍 Just a thought, that "stonehengey" area on the edge of your downtown - would you consider making that a major botanical garden-style city park? Like, keep the structure, and lushness, but keep to "clean" and manicured city park paths and assets, as opposed to a nature reserve?
Overcharged Egg, how did you get so good at building cities in the first place? I try to apply the same thought processes to my builds and they still never look like this.
