I've been skating the 55mm V5 X99 for just over a month now, and they are some voodoo magic. We have much crustier streets here, and the difference between the regular 99a and the x99 is it is comfortable enough to skate to spots, skate crusty spots and still being able to skate the smooth parks vs driving to the park or compromising with a softer wheel and not being satisfied at the smooth skatepark. I'm happy to shill this wheel for free as an older skater. I really appreciate what Bones did with the x99.
I love X99s. They also help my knees deal with impact after a long session, especially after riding loopholes for a while. X97s I'll pass on unless your parks are real rough. I rarely use the board they're on and i noticed a gnarly flat spot last week and I only rode it for about 10-20 mins, last weekz mostly cruising and I genuinely can't recall how it happened.
Experimenting with my wheels is definitely a habit of mine. I’ve been riding the 54mm 93a dragons and have been enjoying them. They are a bit too soft for my taste and I understand what you’re saying about the sound. Still a good wheel though. Tbh, I love this new trend they’ve started but now I may have to pick up this X formula! Love the channel, thanks for entertaining us dude.
im the same but now i like the 97a nanos. mainly because they are a little faster on smooth spots and i like the asymmetrical design for extra grinding space
As update on my wheels- I ditched the dragons after 3 months because the lost that unique feeling they had and my board became very bouncy. Now I’m riding the spitfire Reynolds 93s and they’re very nice. So far I prefer them over the dragons but let’s see what I say in 3 months lol
As a 46 year old skater these were game changers for me. The smoother ride helps alot and makes my sessions alot longer then they were without the x formula 's

Just got the 99x v6 and unpackaging these was satisfying. Love that they are usa made and no tread to wear down. Been riding the x97 and they are wonderful but quiet. Same with the dragons. The x97 feels great and i would use that shape for any wheel. Everyone needs nut protection and they help roll up curbs. But too quiet. Waiting on the dragon 99 nanocubics or even 101 would be a dream
Just curious, Dan made it sound like wheels usually have tread on them... but, do they? At the moment I have 3 sets of Spitfires (50mm tablet 99, 53mm conical 99 and 54mm radial 97), 2 sets of Dragons (52mm and 54mm-wide cut) and some Bones (56mm rough riders) and none of them have tread.
LOL I dunno if this is something other ppl actually say but Dan claiming Thunders don't squeak is pretty funny. They are made of the same materials as any other trucks and bushings and I assure you they squeak plenty unless you regularly treat your bushings

I just got my X99s today!!!! And I fucking love them, they're the perfect pair for the dragon wheels. Keep a set of dragons in the bag for rough shit, and these x99s as daily drivers, the perfect mix! Been waiting for these since the dragons came out at 93a, knowing they'd have to do 99s at some point, super pumped and loving mine so far.
I got a set not long ago and hadn't put them on a setup, but today's rainy and seeing your comment has inspired me to swap my wheels out during the downtime. Cheers! 🍻
@@keethums You've seen me in the Discords, gushing over the dragons, these are definitely the better option for all the guys that are stuck on Spitfire 101s 😅 Did a short session this morning and was really happy with back 180s and full cabs, feels so much easier to powerslide through when under rotating. Make sure to let us know what you think after you get in a couple of sessions!
you know it 🤣@@keethums and dude ... I just had a long 6 hour session with some of the younger dudes, was pushing to keep up all night, and these new wheels were perfect. A lot of under rotated tricks, still rolling away because I can easily powerslide through a bit. Absolutely loving them.
The x97s are great, and I like the x99 even better. They roll way faster than spitfire 99a on rougher streets, but they don’t feel bouncy like dragons can. X99s feel a bit weird at first, but work so well for me.
If Dragons work well for you everything else tends to feel inferior. I’ve tried everything else after and I just go back to Dragons. There are really people that like Dragons which is about 35% of skaters and there is everyone else. Dragon wheel lovers tend to stay that way. That functional softness is a must have or a must have something different
Dragons for Life! Dan just trying to sell more wheels! He said he don’t like dragons because of the sound they make? What? They really don’t make a sound
I live in the Midwest and love Acid Chemical Co Funner formula. I rarely ride hard wheels because everything is dirty and crusty. I rate OJ key frames slightly higher, but that's because of the shape, not the formulation.
The 97x have treated me really well, the only tiny gripe is they stick a bit on nose slides - if you aren't riding indies - and don't revert as easily as f4s. You have to unweight them a little. They roll so much better than the f4s though, even in smoother parks, that they're better for gaps, bumps, long grinds etc. If there's anything close to a perfect mix of the two, it's 100% worth trying to find them.
The way you threw your sweater on the ground reminded me of the kids in kindergarten who shoved their paperwork, jacket, lunch and everything those backpack.
Great video man. Idk about hard wheels. I used to skate them when I started skating because those were usually stock. But one day I got myself some Ricta Clouds 86a hardness. frikken perfect wheel. It's kind of a hybrid. Rough or clean spots, that wheel is an all rounder. I don't understand why people don't like them that much. They're the perfect wheel in my opinion. Sticky at first if you're into powerslides, but once you ride them in, you can make them slide whenever you want. Ricta Clouds will in my opinion always be the greatest wheel.
@@mrhogei at first they can be sticky but nothing you can't push through. After a bit of use and some dirt and wearing down, they're a dream. Super versatile
@@jaredvanderberg9442 i just got the spitfire soft sliders they slide kinda weird not as good as a harder 99a or 101a wheel so i have to wax the ledge on the side and on top more which is a bit annoying. I'm still in the breaking in the spitfire period atm so it can change
For me it’s bones 54mm 99 side cuts strictly new wheels for indoor park only. Then since I’m in the Midwest street spots I’m in 56mm 97 dragons. Major game changer for us who are buried in crust.
i liked the x97, got some x99 but not tried them yet. jessup is my preferred grip. mini-logo wheels are fine. i don't like when wheels bark. to each their own
Hey everybody, first time watcher here. About to buy some dragons actually. I’ll leave my 2cts here for fun. First of all great video. This guy is a pro regular skater. This type of skating is actually as fun to watch as the next skate comp with all the pros. So. I dunno what that means. Keep making videos. Maybe the real message is, not just for skate boarding. Forget about the titles
Also someone hit me up if you hate hard wheels. I got me some spitfire classics.. Never ate so much shit in my life, sliding all over the place on those things. Just a regular skater here
Best wheels I've ever skated are Powell Peralta 56mm 85a G Slides. They slide, they're awesome for transition & great for REAL crusty spots. I'm talking like abandonded parking lots, with super chonky asphalt, & rough east coast non slanted painted yellow curbs. East coast doesn't have it easy.
i ride Acid REM's I got on sale, $20 for the whole set from 35th Ave. They're great. I'm in Philly and need to pick up some softer wheels if i want to skate around at all tho. plenty of cool little spots here but you can't go two blocks without the sidewalks/street being totally chewed up
Bones makes super wheels they call them SPF skatepark formula 83B and 84B scale. which is 103A and 104A i have both in 56mm and 58mm Lizzie Armento wheels
Personally, I'm a fan of STFs and I hope Bones will bring back some of the shapes and sizes they used to be available in, specifically the V6. I'd be stoked to see it made available in a softer durometer, like a 97a. I have the (older) Ben Koppl pro model as well as the Dakota Serviold STF V6s in 99a. The most comparable alternative to these wheels I have found are Spitfire F4 models. I just find dragon and X formulas to be a bit too slippery for my taste.
for street i run Dragons or the nano´s. for parks i use X99s, so its wheels for each scenerio for me. but no doubt the x99s can be used for street with no problems too, but i really really do prefer dragons or nanos for street especially if u want to not have backpain and kneepain then they are GOLD. aaaand as always dope video Dan, love these vids
Great skater, great filmers. And it looks like these are great wheels I should get (dragons wheels are amazing game changers, spitfire as a daily bread).
A few years back I went through a soft wheels phase because I was amazed by the extra speed it provides and it almost felt like "Walmart board lag" going back to some 101s on the street spots I was skating at the time. However I discovered how much it limits power-blunt-nose-tail slide ablity even stuff pivoting out tge last few degrees of a bs flip. So I started to try and find a middle ground but stuff like the 93a ricta clouds just suck for both. So last couple years I landed on 97-98a mini Slimeballs (54mm) but I often wonder if there's the perfect wheel out there for me soft enough to haul but slick enough to still do bs blunts
That would be sick to hear your thoughts on the double duros... I'd probably keep the dragons as my main, but would love something harder for parks... I tried the 97a spitfires on a friend's board, and it kinda felt like a slightly stickier bones x97.
I think countersinking is the name of what your doing to make the nuts flush with the deck. Drilling/screwing the hole will create an angle the same as the bolt going in .. I think that's how it works anyway 😅
Yeah you can buy countersink bits to do the job, they match the angle of the bolt heads. Might not be worth it for most skaters, but if you have them on hand (for making ramps/shelving/whatever) they do a good job.
it's very possible for the wheels to get harder. The constant contact with the ground and repetitive impacts can work harden the urethane if I'm not mistaken. Don't quote me on that though. lol
I tried the x-97 but i really think that i need to skate it more, like the Oj's Nomad for me are really good at 95a. My friend just ordered the x-99 so i will be able to have a good idea!
I finally set up a new setup with everything new after rocking the same setup for the last 2 years. same wheels same deck same hardware same bearings skating every day
Really liked my dragons but the Nano's are much better IMO. This season im going to try the X-Formula. Also, Dan, buy a drill bit and just enlarge the hole.... Sure do love watchin Dan skate.
maybe the heat cures the poly and it gets harder. what happened to 95a crossbones? or 95a in general? that was my goto but back then the part of the east coast i was/am from, the street was the only option beside a rare backyard deathtrap. i like to make to strips in my grip length wise to accommodate my bolts Dan. told you we went to different schools together! lol
I'd like to know how these compare to regular 99a wheels. The dragon/x pitch is "softer, but still slides". 99a already is a hard wheel though. So do the x99 feel softer than 99a, or do they slide significantly better, or what?
have your tryed out the grind king rocket bolts? iv been using them and they are pretty cool. they are kinda like thoughs ones you hammer in but they dont have anything on top. they are like a star shape you hammer in the board till the nut can grab and then you turn the nut to suck it the rest the way in. they will never get loose i like them. id love to see you review them and see weather or not im and idiot for using them lol
Thx for doin this dan. I really wanted an review l could trust on the x f. Im runnin andys nanos atm in the 97s. Theyre great n all but just too quiet & soft for me. As u l like mine hard & really loud. Im ok w sacrificing my knee health w hard wheels. Im east coast aswell so lm on crusty af ground. The loudness over weighs the silent. I even tried the original 93 dragons when they came out & didnt like them at all. Way too quiet & soft & bouncy. The nanos are dragon formula but in 97 so theyre much better. U sayin these are 'loud enuff' made the call for me. Ill give them a shot. Im might be wrong but lve put in my head that the dragon & x f are the same formula due to powell & bones being the same company so its only logical. But the x f has harder duros so...Also, your 1st test run on these was great & they skated great w no negatives. Im assuming these x f 99s will be like the dragon nano 97 but one step up in hardness & loudness
I skate 97A radial fulls. Whoever makes the 93A in a radial full or v6 wide first will probably get my money asap. The dragons have the v6 a2 or nano whatever you want to call it. That’s close but I need asymmetrical
It's probably the reality of the (expensive!) product development cycle, but it's a shame they couldn't release the 93, 97 and 99 closer together or at the same time. There was a lot of good coverage of the dragons, but yeah they're not a one size fits all solution; seeing diff skaters find their solution within the range would have maybe opened peoples' minds to a new wheel formula a little more. The financial risk though for Powell/bones, on an unproven new base, would have been huge.
Just curious, does anyone know what wheels Vincent was skating in Victor's video? They had actual wobbly channels cut out in them. They skated really good actually. I've never seen anything like em before
I always lick my wheels lol and the bearings just push in by hand then. I have seen so many people destroying bearings wheels the axles for gods sake. Then everyone wonders why their axles stay stripped and screwed up.
I too love my dragons for street, but I think they wear down quicker than harder wheels. anyway, I am changing them soon for some 52mm nano cubics 97A, hope they gonna be as good as the dragons, maybe better. my dragons are down to 44mm from 54, so I'll give em another month and then they can retire.
none of the bones wheels have had treads since like 2018 dan.. i miss it, i also miss the STF v5 exact formula from then, because i know they changed them all.. its different, it used to be better
commenting after watching this time 😅 Unless I'm missing something, the Ricta's are cored wheels, so the soft bit is underneath the hard layer, which personally I really don't like. Every cored wheel I've tried has blown out on me at some point. Part of why I've been so behind the Dragon and Formula X wheels is because it seems to be fully the formula that creates the soft but slidy wheels, so they don't have the same problem as the cored variants.
@@DanCorrigan straight up, there's a volcano at my local that's super fun to powerslide across, but I've tried a few different company's cored wheels and had them blow out mid slide at that same spot 😅 Still haven't managed to flatspot the dragons (93a) or the x97s, really looking forward to these x99s once the snow goes away up here, but skated them in my indoor and so far I'm super happy with them.
I miss 80's grip tape, it had just enough to keep your feet sliding off whereas most new grip is too damn sticky, feels almost like glue which sucks for flicking anything. Since I just skate street dragons are the way to go for me

try the Bones SPF 84B they are squeaky and so loud
84B = 104A ''B scale'' is harder than ''A scale''
There is no A-scale above 100, in reality
Personally, I'm a fan of STFs and I hope Bones will bring back some of the shapes and sizes they used to be available in, specifically the V6. I'd be stoked to see it made available in a softer durometer, like a 97a. I have the (older) Ben Koppl pro model as well as the Dakota Serviold STF V6s in 99a. The most comparable alternative to these wheels I have found are Spitfire F4 models. I just find dragon and X formulas to be a bit too slippery for my taste.
I hope you try the spitfire smooth sliders in a vid. I like that they keep the bark, but i need to see they don't grab the ledge on tailslides etc
that wheel sound is so satisfying to me
for street i run Dragons or the nano´s. for parks i use X99s, so its wheels for each scenerio for me. but no doubt the x99s can be used for street with no problems too, but i really really do prefer dragons or nanos for street especially if u want to not have backpain and kneepain then they are GOLD. aaaand as always dope video Dan, love these vids
Dragons keep my back and knees from getting smoked after only an hour. Can skate for 2-3 hours on em
Same here. I even tried using softer wheels (keyframes) and they weren't as easy on the knees as Dragons. I am 53yo with meniscus problems, though.
Me as well. Im 53 & have been SK8ING for 45 years.
Dragon formula have helped me so much as I get older & continue to SK8♥️
Great skater, great filmers. And it looks like these are great wheels I should get (dragons wheels are amazing game changers, spitfire as a daily bread).
My favorite wheels were some kryptonics I dug out of the trash way back, they were super soft yet so fast.
Thanks!
bless you kind sir
They're called Dragons. Try them.
Just got these! Waitin on my trucks for my 8.25 set up and I’ll be giving them a try
Urethane gets harder as they get older. They continue to cure over time and UV degradation cause the wheel be harder.
Oxidation makes them harder, not UV exposure.
@@vorpalblades look up uv urethane cure.
victor is the grip goat lmao i knew exactly what vid you were gonna say when you started talking about it
That would be sick to hear your thoughts on the double duros... I'd probably keep the dragons as my main, but would love something harder for parks... I tried the 97a spitfires on a friend's board, and it kinda felt like a slightly stickier bones x97.
I rode Xformula’s and dragons for a year straight just now got ghetto child classics and they’re a nice inbetween of bones and Powell wheels
Dan, Ive got a set of the Ricta Cores I could send you if you want them. I didnt ride them but for less than a day so they are basically brand new.
Super Cool skating and Good, Honest Review 👍
I think countersinking is the name of what your doing to make the nuts flush with the deck. Drilling/screwing the hole will create an angle the same as the bolt going in .. I think that's how it works anyway 😅
Yeah you can buy countersink bits to do the job, they match the angle of the bolt heads. Might not be worth it for most skaters, but if you have them on hand (for making ramps/shelving/whatever) they do a good job.
That giggle for 100 million tickled me too 😂🤙🏾
it's very possible for the wheels to get harder. The constant contact with the ground and repetitive impacts can work harden the urethane if I'm not mistaken. Don't quote me on that though. lol
Dan, muni, the spot you mentioned in Philly is gone, they are tearing out the plaza currently
I tried the x-97 but i really think that i need to skate it more, like the Oj's Nomad for me are really good at 95a. My friend just ordered the x-99 so i will be able to have a good idea!
Dan was just locked in today.
I’ve been on the nano cubics, switched from the x formula
Bones hardware are the only ones I have had to replace. I am not hard on my shit
I’ve only been skating 3.5 years but my favorite wheels by far are the nano cubics. Like them more than formula 4 and x formula
I dig the Dragons wheels. 🐲
Me too
🐉
have your tryed out the grind king rocket bolts? iv been using them and they are pretty cool. they are kinda like thoughs ones you hammer in but they dont have anything on top. they are like a star shape you hammer in the board till the nut can grab and then you turn the nut to suck it the rest the way in. they will never get loose i like them. id love to see you review them and see weather or not im and idiot for using them lol
Why does everyone mix up what nuts and bolts are? It drives me crazy 😂
😂😂😂 He definitely 100% suppose to know better lol but bro be shredding 🤟🏾🔥
9:00 wheel test
What kind of ‘man bag’ is that Victor has and where(if?) can I get one? Also, that hardware Ur using (not the no spin screws) is made by whom?
I went from dragons to formula x 97, they are better for my skatestyle
Dragons ...Yes or No ??? For bowls and vert etc ?
What exactly is the name of the tool that fixes the screws? DuoLink DualLink?
If you wax the inside of your wheel where the bearing goes the bearings push in so easy or put wax on the outside edge The bearing, then push it in!
Hey kids reading this, don't do this x
Are U-bolts still a thing? They felt kinda odd underfoot but worked well. Those things were the jam in the 90’s.
Haha I remember those on a mate's deck, and the feeling of the metal bridge underfoot.
I love how you said the titles of the two OTHER gen 3 pokemon games when going for the name of the dragonlike spitfire wheels
Hahahahahaha
I tried dragons and x formulas and I agree x formulas are slightly quieter.
Just curious, does anyone know what wheels Vincent was skating in Victor's video? They had actual wobbly channels cut out in them. They skated really good actually. I've never seen anything like em before
Wobbly channels... Were they shark wheels maybe? 🤔
Shark wheels.
do you really ride 103 rem's? where do you get them? highest i can find is 101, and they are kind of hard to find
I’m pretty sure 103 but it could be 101 if you can’t find them. I’m pretty bad at paying attention to stuff like that but I thought it was 103
I think theres some OJ's that are dragon formula. Cant remember for sure sure, though.
No, they are dual durometer.
Hard outer, soft inner.
DAN, what editing software do you use? Or prefer
The hollow Ace hardware is the same where it stays screwed on the top side and you only gotta adjust the lil nut 🥜
Looking forward to the grip review.
Which ones stay whiter longer (crispy white ha)
They make this invention called a drill bit that will up size a hole in wood, even metal!
Is there Thunder trucks review coming up soon too?
Have you tried rocket bolts? It's a better version of that hardware that you use.
Soft wheels always wear faster than hard wheels.
One of my friends has a short with 21mil views and he told me it made $1200 total. Kinda crazy how little shorts make.
none of the bones wheels have had treads since like 2018 dan.. i miss it, i also miss the STF v5 exact formula from then, because i know they changed them all.. its different, it used to be better
Older, WHITE stfs were the shit...once they made the 'dirty birds' the entire line-up changed, everything is softer/browner.
What size wheels do you ride, Dan?
Are slime balls still a thing? I remember being so buzzing getting a set back in the day!
#old man UK skater! 😩
Yep I got a pair of 65 slime balls. Love them
commenting after watching this time 😅 Unless I'm missing something, the Ricta's are cored wheels, so the soft bit is underneath the hard layer, which personally I really don't like. Every cored wheel I've tried has blown out on me at some point. Part of why I've been so behind the Dragon and Formula X wheels is because it seems to be fully the formula that creates the soft but slidy wheels, so they don't have the same problem as the cored variants.
Oh they blow out? Dang maybe I don’t need to try them haha
Frustrating that I can't see what size they are...
I just got the bones x. They're rad
Can we please get x99 nano cubics?
I miss 80's grip tape, it had just enough to keep your feet sliding off whereas most new grip is too damn sticky, feels almost like glue which sucks for flicking anything.
Since I just skate street dragons are the way to go for me
What were u even flicking in the 80s lol
Try Jessup grip.
