  • This is a short compilation of some views from Kirkcaldy, taken in the early 1990s with a Panasonic VHS-C camcorder.

I remember that Intersport store at the bottom of Tolbooth Street at 3:45. Got a few good deals there. We used to love going to the bookshop just a few doors up, have a cuppa tea and a slice of millionaire's shortbread. Alas, the Internet has ripped the heart out of that area.

I'm afraid you're correct, Kirkcaldy's High Street, like many towns, is a shadow of its former self.

Oh my, what a lovely look back on how things were. Loved the supermarket shots. The cashiers still doing the packing as well as the scanning. Trollymen in shirts and tie too. A bygone era.
I can practically smell the coal fires in the outdoor shots. As much as I know gas central heating is far superior, cheaper and better for the environment, I do miss the smell of the lum reek!

Thanks for watching. Wish I'd taken more views around the town back then but sadly this is about all I have.

Yes, there have been many changes since the video was shot, not all of them for the better, unfortunately.

A bit after I left in1982, but my parents stayed there until 2005 and I was a regular visitor until then. Much as I remember it from being a KHS school boy., although I don't remeber the car parks being that empty.

This must be 1990 at earliest; Seafield Colliery towers were demolished in late '89 and they appear to be gone in this video!

Yes, you're correct! Unfortunately, none of my video tapes had any information on them but the Seafield towers help pin the date down. Thanks for pointing that out.

@@ianrwm I agree with 1990, as the Leyland Leopard bus, which we see at 3:18, still has the sticker at the door, after Fife Scottish were runners up in a competition in 1989. Also, the esplanade, the back entrance and yard of Arnotts, and the power tools shop, are still open then. The latter closed in the 1990s, and Arnotts was closed by then, this becoming a car park in the late 1990s, and is now the swimming pool. Another clue is at 2:16. We see a white rotunda building, next to what today is Dunelm. That was B&Q, the white building being the indoor garden centre. B&Q had two branches then, one where Morrisons is now, which they got when they bought Dodge City, and this smaller one, which they got when they bought Jupiter DIY. This smaller one closed in the mid 1990s, becoming Shoprite, then Kwik Save, and now Dunelm.

You don't have to shop around at William Low the price always way down, until Tesco swallowed it up and got their foot into Scotland wonder what happened then?

I'm not exactly sure. I had originally thought it was the 1980's, hence the title on the video but looking again I reckon it's maybe either 1991 or 1992.
