Wow, another video that takes me right back to my childhood visits in the 70's and 80's! For what it's worth, I think the Thistle Street car park was built before the one on the Esplanade, simply because I remember it better. I'm sorry to see the pool is gone, I've been there many times as a kid. Can you do a walk through the Mercat sometime? Or maybe along the High Street?
@@BogieOnPatrol I'm sure I will be devastated, as I already know the High Street is nothing like it was. My uncle always said the town center and High Street were never the same after the miner's strike and recession of the early 80's, so it started a long time ago. I remember even as a kid noticing that the Mercat always had a lot of empty stores in it, for example.
I'm sure that Thistle Street car park was built before the one on the Esplanade. The Shopmobility office was an AA office that as a member, you phoned if you broke down locally, it sold maps, petrol cans etc, then the downstairs window of Tesco (probably that with the roller shutters) and then the downstairs door to Tesco. If you came down the escalator in Tesco you looked straight out towards the Esplanade (and the country bus station) though there was some outdoor parking - further along to the left, a set of stairs went straight up to the swimming pool main door which was still there until the late 70's. This was before the Mercat phase 2 was built, so probably the Esplanade car park was built at the same time as the footway to the swimming pool. The Mercat Phase 1 ended at Tesco / Dixons and a couple of small units next to Dixons.
Oh aye, I remember the AA office was still there when I was a kid. Ahhh, so the original Mercat only went to there. I wondered what the different phases were. Thanks.
They knocked down the houses my family and others lived in to build these structures. All I could show my daughter on a recent trip home was the apartments and parking structure. Thank goodness the Masonic Hall is still standing as is the Volunteers Green down the road. Mind you I grew up in the 50's on Thistle Street.
I remember the old Tesco's downstairs! :D The only time I ever visited that area was back in 1991; we were on a trip with the nursery if I remember correctly :p
Mum used to take me in the upstairs bit loads. I'd look at the Micro Machines in the toy section. Ithink I was only ever down the escalator to go out the back door. Never went in the actual grocery shop. Mum and Dad shopped at Wm. Lows.
On showing a friend through Kirkcaldy, she thought that that building was a burnt out shell 😂. To me the most hideous architectural design is along by the harbour of those facing onto the main road with those protruding form of canopies. The swimming pool was a terrible and of unsafe design, (professional and factual opinion) so glad to see it demolished. Haven't entered the new one. I have now added that too my bucket list😊. The present ones location I believe would have been better if located at the railway station taking part off the current car park. There you have bus, train and road vehicle all in the one area. Thus saving the region thousand upon thousands of pounds in restructuring the prom because of lack of parking for the new pool. I admit the modernising of the prom and road restructuring is in itself very attractive. So perhaps i should remember the old saying " Fools and bairns shouldnt comment on a job half done".😂 Swimming Baths/Indoor Pools in the Kingdom, 1st. Dunfermline, then 2nd Bowhill ( credited by the massive effort of the late Andrew Johnstone Snr.) 3rd Kirkcaldy. 4th Leven. Kirkcaldy Swimming Club in the past used the harbour. I believe there was a Lido along by the rope factory at Seafield now Morrisons. Out into the water at that location is an extremely large block of concrete. This i believe was to be Kirkcaldy's 2nd harbour location, that obviously rnever materialised.
I forgot to add Burntisland and Cowdenbeath pools, dont remember which came first of these. . Burntisland original pool was open air and was extremely cold😢😂.
I remember when it was built thought they would have come back to finish it 🤣
Nah, they just bricked around the scaffolding
@@BogieOnPatrol total eyesore from day 1

Aye, I'll do that tomorrow. Artisan market is on Fridays, so will do that and a walkabout.
Be warned. You might be devastated at some of the changes.
