Top of the Arcade where the barbers is, was the Evening Citizen newspaper printing office. And there was a disco upstairs called 'The Bronx'

Go and do some research on the Raith ballroom far south end of the high street ,last time I saw it it was turned in to a church ,but it was the busiest ball room in fife you’d have to speak to people over 65 who went there ,I’m 72 and went there for a couple of years it used to go off ,,you couldn’t get in without a tie every one was dressed up well ,I now live in Australia for the last 50 years, the Raith is Kirkcaldy history too

Hi, thanks for posting this! I last saw the High Street in 2002, and it sure has changed. Boots the Chemist is literally the only store I recognised. But I sure remember many of the old stores you talked about, even before it was pedestrianised. My Mum worked in Mentiplay's music shop back in the 1940's so it was a real treat that you mentioned that! We used to walk along as far as Woolworth's and my treat was to get the bus back to Links Street behind the big flats where we were staying. I'd make my parents climb to the top deck! Do you remember when the old Co-Op building burned down, maybe early 1980's? That one even made the news over in Canada. Is Pillans's Pies still going? They were delicious.

Forgot to say about Pillans, where Tony's is now. There is a Pillans in Valley, but the pies aren't quite as good as they were.
I was born in 1983 so maybe it wasn't the co-op I remember there.... My mum went to school with the Mentiplays' daughter. Think there were two sons and a daughter that run it when I was a teen.
