Colored sands is my favorite. His reasoning was right in that it sounds so different from their other stuff and is more progressive.

Gorguts are incredible. I love their entire discography. It's a toss up for me between Considered Dead and Obscura when it comes to my favorite Gorguts album. Considered Dead is definitely more of a straight ahead death metal release while Obscura is far more experimental. Both albums are great representations of where the band was at the time the albums came out. Just saw Gorguts live September 27/23. Amazing show.

For me, Colored Sands is nothing less than a 10/10 (joining the likes of Incurso by Spawn of Possession, and To Bathe from the Throat of Cowardice by Vitriol in terms of death metal). That loud production just has the all consuming quality. Like I put my headphones on and put the volume just at the precipice of what is uncomfortable to me and blast it front to back. Just letting it envelope me in its sludgy glory. Also in terms of riffs, for me at least, this has the CATCHIEST in the discography (not counting Inverted or Obscura bc god damn do those string hammer harmonics go so hard). Every song for me is full of distinct and catchy riffs. The opening riff for the album is one of the heaviest I have ever heard and also the first I ever heard from the band that made my jaw drop. Forgotten arrows is just front to back glorious and its intro and ending breakdown are hard to forget. Granted part of this may be due to the ways I have picked the album apart as a musician and its come to influence me as a bassist and composer a lot. From a compositional perspective it is far and away the most complex offering from Gorguts. Obscura, despite what may appear to be a very dense and complex arrangement is quite modular. For more info on this Colin did an interview explaining a lot of how it was written as riffs that were then stitched together in a rather surgical manner. He also acknowledges Luc's problem with the album's weakest aspect, the drumming.
Having JOHN LONGSTRENTH on drums leads to Colored Sands having some of the tightest yet still organic playing that is refreshing to hear in metal. And all of Colin's basslines are just such a treat to follow and listen to how they compliment the guitars.

From Obscura onwards Gorguts kind of sounded like Dillinger escape plan or similar shit.

    My ranking:
    1. Coloured Sands 10/10
    2. Obscura 10/10
    3. From Wisdom to Hate 9/10
    4. Considered Dead 8.5/10
    5. The Erosion of Sanity 8/10
    6. Plaedes Dust 8/10
    7. Negativa 4/10
I personally believe coloured sands is best desrcibed as a musical symphony that was composed in the form of Death Metal. The way the music flows, the atmospherics, the proggy yet avant garde riffs, and most importantly the concept of tibet and its history are masterfully crafted. I share the same sentiments for Obscura, but instead its more focused on pure chaos and dissonance that combines with a very intriguing understanding of greek philosphy. However, I feel obscura in all its brilliamce starts to sound the same a bit around the middle 3 tracks, and starts to drag a little too much before it gets interesting again. I put from wisdom to hate at 3rd because I feel it best combines the aspects of Obscura and Considered Dead, however I feel it gets boring and a bit too streamlined and combined with some somewhat filler tracks near the end keeps it from going higher. Considered Dead is just good ol meat and potatos death metal, but those meat and potatos are like a 5 star restaurant meal even if its a bit boring. Erosion of Sanity in all its brilliance suffers from 1 problem: it is literally a Suffocation copy-cat. While it definitely is way more experimental and techy than CD, its unoriginality with the slam-death aspects as well as having similar song structures to Effigy of the Forgotten hold it back for me. Pleiades Dust is brilliant, but flawed. It feels a little more boring than Colored Sands but it definitely feels original innits concept. The Negativa side project wasn't that great. The first song on the EP was amazing and definitely could belong on Obscura, but that is essentially it. The EP felt like an attempt to recreate Obscura but instead became a lifeless husk of its greater oldsr brother.
