  • The 2024 Juno Awards are coming up soon. One category that I am excited about is the award for Heavy Metal Album of the Year.
Let's take a look back on the history of the Junos and the hard and heavy albums that won best album awards in the past, as well as the nominees and winners of the award for Best Heavy Metal album since the award was first awarded in 2012.

Admittedly I never really paid much attention to the Junos. i did have a radio show going for some years there on campus and it was sometiems a bit of a struggle to find good Canadian stuff to play for me in those days, though not that much of one -- plenty of great bands coming out of Quebec especally that fit into the metal genres that my cohost and I liked to play, but also some great classics from the 80s. Glad Voivod finally got something in 2019....about time!

Though Canada had some cool heavy and hard albums in the seventies, the real metal scene started rumbling in the eighties with Anvil, Exciter, Voivod, Razor, Slaughter, Dead Brain Cells, Sacrifice, Infernal Majesty, Blasphemy, Annihilator, and others. Come the nineties and there was Gorguts, Kataklysm, Cryptopsy, Obliveon, etc. But I think it was in the 2000s the Quebec scene really began rolling. These days, I think Canada has a really robust metal scene nationwide but pretty much underground. The Junos at least help to shine a light on that scene a little.
Voivod were nominated for Nothingface and Angel Rat, but yes, finally in 2019 they won an award.

wow what a rich history of Canadian rock music. I must confess to not hearing of the vast majority. I wonder if Get the Shot got their name from that scene in Pulp Fiction where Uma Thurman's character has suffered an overdose and John Travolta's character shouts out to a friend who he has taken her to, to just "Get the shot, get the shot!!"?

Oh! You may have just won the prize for guessing the origins of the band name. I’ll have to look them up now. For all I know, they may have been around for years. I’ll tell you what I find out!

Band from Quebec City. Hardcore. Three albums and one EP. So, you may be even closer to winning the prize!

It's a bit difficult to definitively award a best metal album of the year if there's so many properly defined sub genres. Rush would win everything if they didn't get a bit more specific 😂 Anyway I didn't know of the Juno's and the history. That was a very informative...as usual. And lots of bands I have never heard of too...as usual👍 Cheers...Ben

I like that the nominees include hardcore, metalcore, glam metal, power metal, progressive metal, trad metal, tech death, and so on. They do recognize many subgenres.
But I can’t help but notice there is a “popular band” club preference happening because some bands are nominated every time they release an album it seems while others are only nominated once ever.
I like making videos for which I need to do some research and I can add in photos. I think they are a little more interesting than the ones where I just stutter and jabber through.
Thank you once again for watching and commenting, Ben!

Which is ironic if the story I heard about the reason for starting up RUclips is true. Something about a video of a costume slip up for Ms. Janet Jackson at the Super Bowl.
