Single handed boating is an interesting challenge on the Thames. Going upstream I run a long thin line along the roof to the stern, tied at the other end to the bow line. I then get off at the stern, up one of the staircases, with the stern line and the long line on one hand and the staircase handrail in the other. Use the stern line to bring the boat to a halt, and then tie off to a bollard. Walk forward, use the long line to retrieve the bow line and then take a turn with it around a bollard. Take in the slack as the boat rises. Much more control than using a centre line. Several lock keepers commented positively on this system during my trip along the Thames this year....

Ref the parable of the red bollard ...
The lockie was quite correct ref the "braking".
As I recall it's all about "tan theta" where theta is the angle subtended etc, etc and Google can supply the rest of the math as I've forgotten it.
Using the rope around the bollard is the best option as can prevent a person being pulled into the water.
You can thank me later after I've saved your life, probably, I expect, no doubt.
Not a bad episode by any means.
So thanks very much for some nostslgia stuff.
And, will look forward to your next joint production. Hopefully you might consider doing some of the dormitory stretches in Inner London.
If ever you get around Brentford I recall there's a pub entirely surrounded by canals and basins. Access is via bridges ... fortunately wide enough for a small dray thingie.
Used to have lunch there about 50 years ago ... so can definitely recommend it ...
