Darling, I used your guide to make piping bags because I could not find any locally at my small country grocer's. You allowed me to make French macaroons (white chocolate and raspberry) that turned out PERFECTLY because of your little bag instructions. Thank you! you're marvelous! MUAH!
I should also note, that rather than a metal or plastic tip planted inside the paper cone, I simply taped the cone together with scotch tape and cut the desired circumference of the piping hole. It worked great, and I didn't have to struggle with a tip falling out if I squeezed a thick mix out.
the piping tip can either change the shape of the frosting you place like if it is a star shaped one a star shaped bit of frosting will be pushed out, or it helps you have more control like if the end of the metal tip is very narrow the frosting will be pushed out slowly but have more control and if the metal tip is large it's just vice versa. Varies on what you re using

Put the piping tip in to gauge how big to cut the tip of the piping bag, cut the piping bag tip to an appropriate size, put the piping tip back in and add frosting
Actually, you can get packs of a hundred disposable piping bags on eBay for a dollar (with free shipping, even!!) if you are shopping around. So it might actually be cheaper in the end.
