When my Mum died at the age of 53 unexpectedly, I did not shed a tear. Family and friends asked me what was wrong, I did not look sad when in actual fact, I was absolutely devastated and so deep in shock that my grief, caused me to go almost mute, unable to speak for days but not a tear came out. 30 years later, I sobbed and sobbed and sobbed.

It is USUALLY a pattern though.. that's why it's mentioned

“Joey”, had a history of violence. It was a well established pattern. It was history…He hid it well and set up a new, non-violent life. He did not get caught, but rather, “they” caught up with him. Eventually the pattern exposed itself, by happenstance, exposing his hidden secret, and ultimately they re-entered the picture, and became the salvation of his new, non-violent life.

Cindy initially stated she was charmed because he told her she was beautiful. That was not charm, but instead manipulation.
Charmed so much that she believed he couldn’t have murdered her .🙄

Heidi Firkus - 1:09:21 - I’m sorry but Nick’s friends are in huge denial. You have to believe he killed his wife for no reason? There’s a gigantic reason. He lied about their finances so much she had no clue their house was already sold in a foreclosure and their eviction was happening the day he killed her. He could not tell her. He’s a darn coward. This woman just sounds ridiculous standing up for him.
I agree. There are also NUMEROUS examples of spouses having ZERO past behaviors that would hint they are capable of killing their spouse, yet they do. They all have secrets, and 90% are over money or affairs, or both. Their arguments are asinine and have no basis in reality. It’s obvious he killed his wife.
Even her walking downstairs before him proves he is one. He is a coward.
I'm with you he killed her you can see that he's that type of guy you can see it
Nick's story is complete crap... 'the door burst open' magically with no sign.. he bears no sign of a struggle, the ghost disappeared without anyone seeing him.. shore...

Advice.....DO NOT move to Costa Rica! The justice system is long and absurd. My in-laws retired there, and both passed away there and for 6 years we are still in court regarding the estate and there was a will. Judges play musical chairs, and mistakes are made as it drags on and on and on! It cost thousands of dollars and my father-in-law's legacy that he left has been robbed! Just don't do it!!! You can trust No One!
third world country corruption .
Chile, and maybe Argentina, are the only two places south of the US border where you might get proper justice and the legal system is least corrupt. Not saying that there isn't corruption in the US, just that it's less there than in any other place south of the US border.
Are you sure that’s not 🇨🇦 you’re talking about?
@@edortiz4496 I'm an American citizen living in Chile, and judicial corruption is certainly a problem here. I have never had contact with the Chilean criminal justice system, but there are frequent news reports on the subject. Chilean police, however, are famously incorrupt. I would hate to be charged with a serious crime here, since Chile has no trial by jury option, and the prison conditions are awful. They make US prisons look like 5-star hotels.
@@edortiz4496That being said, you may be right about the Chilean justice system being the least corrupt. Just that "least corrupt" isn't saying much when we're talking about Latin America. The main issues are lifetime appointments for judges, no trial by jury, and double jeopardy. The US justice system is fairly unique on the latter two points, and I think most Americans aren't able to appreciate it until we've seen how things work elsewhere.
I would definitely encourage other Americans to visit Chile, and even move here if they appreciate the language and culture (or are married to a Chilean like I am), but there are definitely downsides to be aware of. It isn't North America and that's okay, we shouldn't expect it to be.

Never talk to cops!”, which was told to me by a retired cop. His advice was aways ask for a lawyer, no matter what! You can always go from Not Guilty to Guilty, immediately, if you want. Not so easy to go from Guilty to Not Guilty. You always have the opportunity to tell your story at any time, showing remorse. When the Interrogator’s claim to want to help you, they are lying. They have many specific techniques to manipulate you. They can legally lie to you all they want. Their only goal is to close the case. They are not your friends. They will tell you that talking to them is the only way you can show you’re not a monster, or show remorse, acting like this will be your only time to explain your side. That is a lie in itself. Talk to a lawyer anytime they want to talk to you. Get up and leave, when they say you can. Them saying you must have something to hide or it makes you look guilty, if you obtain one. This is not true. Many times, polygraphs read false positives that say you’re lying, which is why they’re not admissible in court.
You have the right to a lawyer. Use it. If you’re arrested, you may request one when you’re booked into the jail, and talked to the judge, so you’ll have to stay at least one night in jail, but it’s just best to talk consult with a lawyer, so you fully understand your rights. Even if you’re innocent. There is a specific list of specific techniques, called the “Reid” technique, which is used to totally manipulate you to confess, whether guilty or not.
They will say, they have enough evidence to convict “right now”. That probably is a lie right there to
you. It’s because they need more evidence, or strengthen the case. Just remember, their goal is to close the case, and that’s all.
& the judge respects an attorney you provide. Yet not a public defender.
So he pays cash for a house, puts it in trust with his mom, refuses to put his wife in the trust, guts it like a scrapper making it unsafe, his wife foots the bill for “renovations” and she’s living in the garage and he’s with his mama. Yeah. He’s a real winner.

Excellent reporting on Ann Bender. This was an amazing story. Hats off to 48hours team. May God bless that poor woman who has lived so much trauma. May she heal to the best state possible. Oh, Ann! Im so sorry for all your suffering!
Only Jesus can truly comfort you. May you find rest in Him & have true divine peace. He also suffered the keenest anguish. He also experienced brutal betrayal. Then, evil men, inspired by the prince of darkness, beat Him beyond recognition and then murd3ered the innocent Lamb of God, as His holy Father covered Him in supernatural darkness and stood beside His beloved Son, as His tortured body and supreme mental suffering took His pure life & He died on the Roman cross. But in His anguish, He was the victor in the Great Controversy. By faith, in the character of His Father, He cried out : Father, into Your ( holy loving hands) I commit My Spirit!. He had the victory by faith. The battle was won, for each & every one of us, by non violent selfless means. Only satan uses force. He lost. Now supernatural comfort can come to each one of us who is suffering. And the promise of eternal life where there is no more suffering, is sure, if you accept it as a completely free gift.
May Ann find peace through our gentle Savior and each one of you reading this, that is suffering right now.

Not specifically regarding the first case, but it has always bothered me whenever police say it couldn't have been a burglary-gone-wrong because of valuable stuff not taken. Burglary is: entering a dwelling with the intent to commit a crime. So no just entering a house is not burglary. That would be unlawful entry.
@@taylormajors5677yeah but when they say it on these shows they mean burglary with intent to steal
Same as when they clear someone bcs they had an alibi. Uhhhhh…. They could have had someone else do it?
Poor Ann. I totally understand what happened according to the experts. I'm sad you had to keep reliving that event over and over.
The so called experts said it could have happened either way. The trajectory of the bullet is very plausible if Ann was on the other side of the bed and leaned over. The so called experts were there to defend a white woman. Its clear no one cares about John.
Wait what! No bearing on the case? Hello Judge!
The destruction of that beautiful historic home is a crime in itself. Why not buy a new home if that’s what you wanted 🙄 And he’s clearly not into women- could see that a mile away- never understood this relationship.

What can you “see from a mile away” through pictures alone? Enlighten us. 🙄

I totally agree, I dislike them as much as I dislike the criminals they are defending.
I’m really tired in these cases of people using couples who don’t share the same bedroom as murderers. Millions of couples sleeep separately for everything from snoring to health conditions. Hell my husband and I have slept separately for years bc we actually get sleep when we aren’t fighting for covers, mattress firmness, temperature, and snoring and we are happier and healthier for it. Hell, most people I know do the same thing for the same reasons.
Not at the beginning.
@@Somegirl811 ummm yes. Even at the beginning. I have absolutely never enjoyed sharing a bed. I can’t sleep and I can’t deal with a lot of movement in my bed as well as snoring or sleep talking. Just because YOU have always enjoyed it or did so early in your marriage does not mean everyone does. S
Everybody grieves differently, some people hold it in and stay strong, some fall apart, some constantly laugh a little when dealing with trauma. There is no “right way” to grieve. I can’t stand when I hear cops say “He or she didn’t even cry at all” that doesn’t matter. When my mom passed right in front of me and my dad and brother, I absolutely fell apart. I couldn’t breathe I couldn’t eat, my brother never cried or looked phased but that’s because he was with her through her suffering for months and felt like her suffering was over and now she could rest. My dad had his head in the clouds, sometimes laughing when he’d start reminiscing about her. WE ARE ALL DIFFERENT.
Obviously everyone grieves differently. It drives me absolutely crazy when people repeat that overused trope. But within culture, we grieve VERY similarly. Your extreme variance within your own family is not the norm. Those would be considered outlier cases- NOT THE NORM.
@@projectionv.accountability1010 Yes, but the point is when it comes to putting someone behind bars that is hardly what I want police using as evidence. Most people grieve similarly but a large percentage grieve in different ways.
I’m so sorry for the last woman, Ann Bender. I struggle with depression and it’s a very strange ideation. There is no logic, there is no typical way, the state of mind is just wrong. There’s nothing usual or unusual to it. It’s just a deep sadness, like you are dead but they forgot to bury you. I hope she can heal from this excruciating tragedy
I'm so sorry you have felt that way. It sounds like you're living in a nightmare from hell. I hope you have got help and are truly at peace and happy🕊️
My doctor prescribed Pristiq for me, and it really helps. I’m not sure if I spelled it correctly but this how it’s pronounced. Hope you get better soon.🥰
Thinking of you and hope you're doing okay, friend.
I would imagine nobody was surprised about his sexual orientation after hearing the way he sounds when he cries
So true. Hilarious 😂
I thought it was a friend initially not husband, very obvious women are not his preference
😆
I had a feeling just by his mannerisms, and the crying sealed the deal 😂
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
That isn’t charming. Saying “How lucky am I to be having lunch with two of the most beautiful women I know?” is vomit inducing and an obvious attempt to b.s. and it worked like a charm. Why can women not see through that? I am female and it screams red flag.
Yes! Thinking the same. 😬
Be wary of a person accused of a crime who keeps using the word "absolutely" in every sentence. Every time I have seen this they are guilty!
I absolutely agree with you!

You don’t spend a dime on something you don’t have your name on…. Love or no love. My spouse and I share absolutely everything and it has never been a question about it, we agree on most things and when we don’t, we compromise like adults. We also don’t have secrets and maybe thats why we have been happy and functional for almost 20 yrs. Marriage is not perfect but its work just like all else in life. Be transparent people!

1:08:17 - No, we don't have to believe he killed her for no reason. He had plenty of reasons, if you knew the whole story.....
My Sister died.when I got the News I CRIED MY HEART OUT I HOLLERED AT GOD I HOLLERED AT MY SIS then returned to hollering at GOD again. Then I HEARD HIM SAY”go to your Bible open it to THESSLONIANS 4:16 I read it says,Those who died In Christ Shall meet Those in CHRIST will be with each other again. So I was comforted. Since then I only cry in private CAUSE I miss so much, but at her Funeral I could not Cry. For my Brother too can’t cry We’re All born again I will see them again GODS PROMISE.
Your god sounds cruel and hypocritical. He didn’t even give you an explanation why he did it, just to deal with it. 🤦♀️
“How lucky am I? I get to have lunch with the two most beautiful women I know!” 🙄 He obviously only knew only one woman! Not charming Dear, just manipulatively insincere! 🤨🙈
Not many women want to know him so his options are limited
Re Costa Rica....I built a home in a different Central American country. And it is paradise BUT building something on that scale is a tremendous temptation to others. The more you have the more a target you are.
I think that's exactly why there was trial after trial. A lot of money/jewels at stake. And the taxes.
Right?
@@cdes1776She did finally get her jewels back.

She got away with it.
Does seem pretty crazy building such a huge house in that area . Totally understand why the locals with hate the gringos.
Yeah because the labor involved in getting the materials to build such a monstrosity to such a remote and isolated location and to build it must be very difficult and they spent MILLIONS to build it while probably paying the laborers mere pennies to do all that hard work.
My first wife was poisoning me. She would make special meals just for me and whatever I didn't finish she would put down the disposal. As soon as I left her I started feeling better. Every guy she has been with since me including her current husband has had heath problems. When I was still with her my stomach was numb. I consider myself lucky.
Should’ve called the cops
Sure. Funny how you know every guy she's been with lol

The guy had $300,000 in the bank so his lawyer had every reason to tell David he could get him off..probably charging him 150,000-200,000..😢
You don't "think someone grabbed the barrel" if you're being attacked. You know. This guy is a bad liar.
Ann Bender & her husband built a refuge for animals in Costa Rico jungle. The house they built made many animals homeless. Near the end, she's seen back in her house and a lovely little dog scurrys past her with his tail curled tightly under his belly. She gives out to him for something and his head goes down as he lowers his body trying to get away from her. She terrifies her own tiny pet. I would say there is a side to her she hides from public eyes. When she moved to the U.S. I wonder if she brought her terrified pet. I hope that dog is with loving people.
Her crying and tears come across as being very fake, to me.
If the hubby calls 911 sounding hysterical and telling stories instead of asking for help and giving an address, take him straight to prison and leave him there for life.
Thank you to Rachel for coming forward.
Yes, Rachel has been remarkable with her intuitions and self-preservation skills, thanks to which her kids are not motherless today. Not to forget how she did not refrain from withholding very crucial information/evidence which finally helped clinch the case against the pretentious scumbag and brought some semblance of justice to a very trusting Heidi.

The neighbor didn't say he heard any gunshots but he heard him screaming? Impossible!
Men always come up with the stupidest stories. "Someone was breaking in so I loaded the gun and told my wife to go ahead of me." Sure. That makes as much sense as when a man says his wife left him after they had an argument but left her car, her keys, her purse and her phone.
I found that the defence had good arguments that casted serious doubts on what the prosecution alleged about Nick. People react differently in highly stressful situations. And the sentencing was in my view disproportionate. But I wasn’t a judge in that courtroom…
Good point, garden plot
