Kipping pull ups just add cardiovascular and total body components to the move and they also allow for more reps. You won't increase your dead hang strength by doing these but you will develop stamina and engage plenty of muscles other than just your back because as you fatigue, you are required to kip larger and harder in order to complete the move.
Dead hang pullups are always going to be a better workout. That being said, a person can only do so many dead hang pullups. Doing way more kipping pullups than you can do dead hangs will, however, give your pullup muscle groups much more stamina, therefore increasing your dead hang max. But more than anything, with a workout like this, you are still working major muscle groups and keeping your heart rate up.
it's really simple, this is a metcon, not a strength building workout. If it were a strength builder there would be no kipping allowed. This involves the hips (your biggest power producer), and a more dynamic use of the lats.
I love the routine buuuuut this is what i don't like: not a single pull up has been done in this video. this should just be renamed to kip-ups since it's not a proper pull up to begin with. Difference in strength and time to do 20pull ups and 20kip ups is not the same as much as the ring muscle up has nothing to do with kip muscle up. And to add, I'm not saying bad things about crossfit only about this exercise so I know haters gonna hate but please don't.
its a cheating way to do pullups ... the kip is a technique used in gymnastics to help get over the bar. It appears its more for aerobic purposes than anything else in crossfit.
