These videos help me so much, my APUSH teacher is horrible, nothing she gives us is her own material, is all taken from outside sources which creates incongruities between notes and test questions.
Jackson called Adams a murderer, not the other way around. Background: Adams claimed that Jackson's wife was married to two men at the same time, using this as mud to insult Jackson in an action known as mudslinging (insulting political rivals). She had forgotten to sign the last page of her divorce document before she married Jackson. It was all settled, but after Jackson's election, before his inauguration, she died from a heart attack. Jackson claims that the stress fro the election and Adams insults killed her, but she did have a pre-existing heart condition. The end.
Thank you John Green for being super awesome. These videos totally rule and your history teacher seems pretty swell. Now since I have only made it to Jackson it's time to read 350 flashcards in the remaining hours of the night.
Thank you! My class watched the good, evil, and the presidency movie when I was absent, and my teacher told me to watch it during my spare time. I took one look at the 2 hour mark, said NOPE, and went to find and easier solution. Luckily I found this :-)
We always watch crash course at the beginning of a new unit in my us history class and it's so helpful. It gets everyone Interested and I get to sit in the back of class thinking nobody knows I'm a nerd fighter haha.
When you think about it from a purely American perspective Jackson was great. He expanded American territory and was a successful war hero. His fiscal policies certainly weren't the best but his military and political policies worked. From a moral perspective every expansionist conqueror was a horrible person. Jackson was bad for everyone else but very good for America.
+Goode Boyd However, these people were known to cause atrocities, were they not? Look at what Jackson did to due democratic process when the court ruled in favor of the native americans, he simply disregarded their decision. Do the ends justify the means? Would you be willing to have a select population suffer in order to benefit the elite in the country? (Sorry if I'm coming on a little strong, I mean no disrespect. But I'm genuinely intrigued)
+Goode Boyd Yeah, people forget this stuff. There seems to be a general rush to get to moral high ground on specific historical scenarios, but then people forget that these sorts of things were the norm for that age. It was ugly times all over.

One thing that is a bit misleading is your information about how Andrew Jackson vetoed the Bank's charter. The charter was actually set to run out in 1834, but instead of having it extended in 1834 (Because Jackson would reject it), Nicholas Biddle decided to attempt to have it extended in 1832, just in time for Jackson's reelection. For if Jackson had denied the extension, it would hurt his presidential campaign, therefore forcing Jackson (as Biddle thought) to Reinstate the 2nd National Bank for another term. But Jackson vetoed it, and told the American people that this was to create less of a gap between economic classes (Which pissed a lot of wealthy people off (A big reason that the Whig party was formed)). Also, Jackson never ran for president in 1836, that is an error. Jackson was initially elected in 1828, and reelected in 1832. Jackson respected Washington and his choice of Two Terms, and decided to aide Martin Van Buren in the election of 1836 against William Harrison.
Very right, except the 2nd bank charter was 1816 to 1836. Jackson would still be president in 36 if re-elected in 32. Almost no one understands this these days.
Smakve been watching your videos since last year when i was in world history AP and i just love how you depict history, whenever i watch your videos i think that would be such a great thing to write in an essay, I know that your videos are mainly about historical context but i was wondering if you could make a video on writing essays and what would be a good format to use for dbq's and frq's , PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE
Andrew Jackson's relation's with Native American's is also interesting. Jackson and Rachel never had children. But they three adopted children. One was Rachel's nephew, the other two were orphaned Native American children. He also served as the guardian of 8 other children after their father died. Say what you want about his politics. But damn he had one depressing personal life. He lost his entire family before the age of 14. He was also a bad ass. He got into a duel with Charles Dickinson (Not the writer) after he wrote a paper that attacked his wife. He let Dickinson shoot first. He got his inches away from his heart. He then shot Dickinson fatally. So yeah, Fucking badass.
It was interesting to learn more about Andrew Jackson; before this video, all I really knew about him was that he was a veteran, a president, and responsible in some way for the Trail of Tears. I still don't think highly of him (I don't think highly of people who march people to their deaths), but at least I know more about him.
I like how John Green reluctantly doesn't tell us of Thomas Jefferson and Andrew Jackson dislike and hatred of banks. The American people took down the First Bank of the United States and Jackson preceded in taking down the Second Bank of the United States. Much love, Aaron Thompson.
My research only came from wikipedia but i knew about the banking system for quite some time. Anyways, i feel like you doesn't mention for fear and controversiality

...You glossed over that the Native American land was recognized as countries by the US and that Jackson declared war and began to forcefully remove them without the approval of Congress. And that once he was told he couldn't do that he basically said "too bad, I have guns and an army and you don't." Yet another great thing to come out of Florida
+Garrett Repp I know. I was trying to make a joke in the days leading up to the AP U.S. History Exam, when all of us were up at the penultimate hour studying

He was shot twice by Thomas Hart Benton. Shattered his shoulder, and the bullet that lodged in his arm couldn't be removed. He carried it the rest of his life. Benton went on to be Missouri's first senator. Later on they became political allies and friends. Benton was one of the few who bested Jackson. Yay Benton.
I love these videos so much! They're really useful for prepping and reviewing for the APUSH exam; however the exam is tomorrow and the series isn't anywhere near complete. I expect future generations to judge us by their morals, as they should. They'll probably say how we raped the planet of all its resources and wasted most of it on this stupid thing called Capitalism.
John, love your videos. I think you might be outdated on the causes of the Panic of 1837. With the help of computer models, it has become clear that the Panic of 1837 and subsequent depression had more to do with global market issues, especially the loss of silver exports from Mexico due to the Texas Revolution. The true causes were global in nature and beyond the U.S. government's control. Jackson's policies certainly didn't help at all though, but we can't lay the blame wholly on Jackson anymore.
He is. Trump would kick critics out. Jackson would challenge his critics to a duel to the death, no mercy if accepted. He's the kind of guy who would beat a person to death with his bare knuckles, which he did to an assassin, if he could. His brutality is actually understandable if you look into his background. Unlike Trump who lived wealthy as a child, Jackson on the other hand had a very very horrible hate-filled and violent childhood. He saw family and friends hanged and burned alive by the British, he walked on a death march sick under rain and heat alongside his brother who died, was enslaved, imprisoned, and tortured as a teen by the Brits, his mother died caring for his sickness and was buried in a mass grave and when the war ended, all of his family members except for his father were dead due to the British. A life of hatred and violence turned him into a brutal man that showed no mercy to the enemy, some examples was that he threatened to hang and burn Spaniards in Florida, shot Brits who wanted mercy or were retreating, mercilessly killed Native Americans who sided with the British. He personally hated the British more than any other enemy he met. Andrew Jackson is almost the perfect example of how hatred and brutality can breed even more hatred and brutality.

Trump's idea= Jackson's idea
