I have both the 24 and the 35mm tamrons on a sony a7r ii. I love both of them, although the 35 gets most of the usage. Excellent sharpness, good colors, and nice flair resistance. My favorite is the1:2 macro, which I use every day. It would be hard to switch to another lens, for example the new 35mm f2 sigma and give that up. Ocassionally I miss not having a wider aperature for the bokeh. However, for me, having the macro is more important. Exceptional lenses, and afffordable! The weakness of the 35mm, is slow focus in low contrast or low light. the 24mm focuses faster. the weakness of the 24mm is the distortion, although still usable. a manual focus switch would be nice. in the future, I plan on either the 17-28mm tamron or the 14-24 sigma, and the 70-180 f2.8 tamron. I also have the viltox 85mm f1.8, a wonderful lens.
I'd actually love to see the Zeiss version and the Samyang lens in there aswell. Majorly suprised about the shown Sony 35 1.4 - I don't remember the lens itself looking like that from the outside (especially the red ring on the bottom), but I might be wrong. Edit: Just realized the red ring indicates a old Sony A mount lens. Of this is actually the lens they used, then this whole comparison is seriously not saying that much.
Before this Tamaron there was the Samyang, so I got one. No regrets. I thought the Sony and Sigma 35 were just to large for that focal length. 35 is usually a run and gun, so it should be compact.
Socrates Vela the Sony Zeiss is available for cheap second hand cause there are lots of them around now. It’s a much better lens than the tamron - the Sony/Zeiss is lighter, sharper and has much better bokeh. As for Samyang there just not in the same league (but useful for those on a tight budget). Anyway, my point was the Sony/Zeiss 35mm f2.8 would be good in this comparison.
i'm not a fan of how they tested these lenses...the whole point of buying the sigma 35mm 1.2 is to shoot it using a wider aperture. I would much rather have some more real-life examples for testing such as for portraiture or low light photography.
You measured barrel distortion and sharpens, but nothing else. How about Bokeh - circular aperture, repeatable manual focus accuracy, autofocus accuracy, AF speed, AF tracking/continues AF speed and accuracy and how silent the lens is (audible noise generated from aperture and AF acquisition). All these qualities matter as much as sharpness - if not more depending on what you're shooting.
I'm looking forward to a test with Sony 35/1.8, Sigma 35/2, Samyang 35.18, and Tamron 35/2.8. Please try them with video too, on a camera with the latest AF (A7C for example).
Thanks guys. I think many of your viewers are shooting entry to budget enthusiast cameras so the Tamron lens would be their choice simply for it's price. I would like to see a similar test with a Nikon or Canon entry level/budget friendly camera such as Canon t8i or Nikon d5600.
@@TheSlantedLens thanks! There's no such review or I don't know about that. Tamron 35mm 1.4 is incredible for the price and I couldn't find anything like that for Sony so I use it with MC-11. There's Zeiss 35mm 1.4 which is very pricey and some copies have sharpness issues and there are Sigmas which are huge and have poor light transmission.
I think the Sony 35mm F1.8 is a more direct comparison to the Tamron 35mm F2.8. Both are the newest 35mm for E- mount on the market. And they weight Similar. For the people who are interested in the Tamron, they very likely look for something budget friendly lens, Not the Zeiss F1.4
Hello sir, I confused about 2 lens.... Sigma 35mm 1.4 art DG HSM & tamron SP 35 1.4 Di Please suggest me which one should I buy !! My priority better sharpness, better bokeh, better color reproduction... I'm Nikon D750 user. Please help me🙏🙏🙏
It's a shame Tamron didn't go to f1.8's with their new primes. Does anyone think that with Sony being a shareholder that they might be leaning on them with their designs?
What I don‘t understand, on the testchart the Tamron is much more wider than the other lenses, but on the sign and the street it is not. Can you explain pls. Thx
So, the third party lenses can be better than the old and obsolete Sony A mount lens that you guys adapted and called the "native" 35F1.4 G :). That's not really fair. I mean, there are 2-3 decades old "native" A mount Minolta lenses too. Should we consider those as well? :)
Glad to see I made the right decision in purchasing the Tamron 35mm f2.8. I was struggling between the Sony 35mm 2.8 ZA and Tamron. Tamron was easy on the wallet too! BTW there is a new firmware out on the Tamron 35mm as of July. I am hoping this test was done with the new firmware on the lens.
I have tamron 35mm 2.8, I am quite happy with that lens its razor sharp, but when it focus, its like some old vintage car engine trying to start. motor is so loud.
The zoom is much larger, heavier, more expensive and not as sharp. My wife and I often take the tamron 35 and Sony 50 f1.8 out on our cameras and each carry 1 other small prime lens. Often the 85 f1.8 and an old Tamron 28 manual focus or some other interesting adapted lens (90mm macro or Pentax 50mm M). We both prefer the much lighter setup and all together that collection was cheaper than a Single Tamron zoom and sometimes faster. All bought used (except the Tamron 35) on 2nd hand A7ii bodies.
You guys know this, over the years theirs been a lot name brand name nonsense out there. like if you don't shoot X you are not pro, or if you dont have X lens from Nikon or Cannon you some how are not going to get a great image. baloney. prof is right!
Wait, wait, wait .... who the **** buys a lens f/1.2 for shooting it at f 16??? And what the hell do you expect if you shoot it at that aperture? Everyone can see, u r presenting the Tamron (wich is NOT bad at all), but come onnn ... hahahahaha .... the set price for a lens is "for something" right?!? compere them all at 1.2 , why not? Tamron this, Tamron that. Funny. F 1 . 2 (or 1.4) IS THE THRUTH!!! And U know it (hopefully)

It is showing that native lenses aren't always the best choice.

Great point. Thanks for sharing your experience.
The Sony/Zeiss 35mm f2.8 would do well in this comparison. That lens is crazy small and light weight and a good performer
True, but at over twice the cost of the Tamaron; will not be worth it. Tamaron delivers, just like a Samyang or Rokinon.

That would be a good comparison to do. Thanks for the tip!
What REALLY needs to happen is for Tamron to release their 35mm f1.4 in E mount.
Yes, that would be great. They are lately going for that small form factor.
How about testing more related lens? Like Tamron 35mm 1.4 (via metabones or sigma mc11) vs Sony vs Sigma?
Great suggestion. We will put it on the list.

Why compare the old sony A mount but not the new FE?
Was going to ask the same question, seems odd to use the old A mount 35mm lens
Maybe they have no idea an E mount 35 1.4 even exists? lol
The editor must have put up the wrong graphic. We used the 35mm 1.4 FE lens.
they just put the wrong image in the video..

Both are excellent lenses. If you look at the review the edge to edge sharpness on the Tamron is better.

What I don‘t understand, on the testchart the Tamron is much more wider than the other lenses, but on the sign and the street it is not. Can you explain pls. Thx
The closer the subject is to the camera the more apparent it is. So the images of the sign are further away and the difference is not as noticeable.
When you say the image is Straight out of camera- is that a JPG or a Raw file, processed with no adjustments in Lightroom or similar?
We shot raw files and did not manipulate them. We just processed in raw and saved them as jpegs.
The Slanted Lens -Thx. Just wanted to know if there was any in camera “processing” to create the JPGs.
Surprising results...
I feel that the Samyang 35mm is missing on this comparison... Great video! 😄
That would have been a nice addition. Thanks for your comment!
Nice review,
I heard the sigma art series 30mm/f2.8 is a great budget for Sony aps camera.
Sigma makes some great lenses!
I feel better about buying 20mm Tamron for my A7R iii a couple of weeks ago.
They really are great lenses!

We didn't use an old lens that we adapted. Thanks for watching!
We used the Sony Distagon T* FE 35mm f/1.4 ZA Lens. It was listed wrong.
@@TheSlantedLens Thanks for clarifying that :)
When are you testing R5 and R6..?
Coming up soon! Thanks for the nudge!

not have been used.
Did you guys swap beards at the minute mark?
That is what happens when you shoot the video and then shoot the intro later!
@@TheSlantedLens phew! I thought facial hair was contagious for a minute there. 😁

The F1.2 we used in this comparison was great and silent. The 2.8 is an older lens. Not sure if it is normal for it to be noisy.
If you’re going to shoot at 2.8 just get a zoom. Otherwise get the sigma 1.2
Generally speaking zooms are not as sharp as fixed focal length.

That is exactly right. The native brand lens is not always the best.
:D "Don´t shoot at thes large apertures" 11 are a smal aperture ;)
Yes. 11 is a small aperture. Thanks for watching!
Why'd you lose the beard?
It's still there. We shot part of this before the beard.

The only lens I care about is the original 35mm F1.4 G for my A99m2!
