I think this is the first time a RUclipsr, other than AvE, has ever dared to speak ill of a Milwaukee product. Good to see there’s still a tool channel out there that hasn’t sold their soul to Milwaukee. Keep up the good work guys.

I really appreciate this review. It showed the constitution of the box inside and out. I just want to know how well a tool box is actually built. I typically look at the dimensions and weight of a tool box and compare it to other similar boxes to try to get an idea if it’s a quality box but you can’t really know until you crawl inside it and under it. Great insight on the locks and usability of the drawers. Thank you for an in depth, quality review and an honest opinion on this tool box. Very nicely done!

I had the same issue with my box on the drawers not opening the full length. But I found if you pull it past it’s factory set stop which doesn’t take much force at all. Then it opens the full length and works exactly as it did before but it always opens the full length now. I’ve had mine for 3 years now and would highly recommend it

Lots has changed price-wise with all the various brands of steel boxes since this video was made 3 years ago. Considering today's pricing, I had my choices narrowed down to the 46-in high capacity Milwaukee box and the 52-in matte black Husky box. They were side by side at my local Home Depot so I was able to easily compare them. They are both nice boxes for a home garage, but the Milwaukee is a slight step above the Husky in my opinion. Although the Husky is 1,477 cu.in. bigger, the Milwaukee weighs 59 lb more, which tells me a lot. The aesthetic on the Milwaukee was better in my opinion, but I much prefer red over black anyway. The Milwaukee's red & black textured finish is much nicer. Lots of external extras come with the Milwaukee. And the final kicker was that the Milwaukee was $100 less than the Husky at $898 vs $998.

I have the Husky 56 inch chest and matching 46 inch mobil work bench in the garage. they work great for me. I also use a few old Lateral and vertical filing cabinets as tool storage. The used file cabinets carry more weight than any rolling tool chest are dirt cheap compared to the rolling tool chests I also label my drawers. I use 3/4 inch P-Touch labels applied to double stick magnetic tape. The magnetic labels are great if i need to add or rearrange tools. Thanks for the review.

I really appreciate the the honesty in pointing out the pros n cons on this box. I was very excited about the longer box and all the supposed beefier aspects. I found the old box lacking and of lessor quality than my masterforce of 7yrs. When I got see it in store i did pull out the drawers much to the dismay of store staff. Disappointed to say the least though I was in no position to see the bottom as you showed. Appreciate that. I didn’t like the locks and how they work either. The narrow drawers would gain me very little having to discard my current set up to lay everything flat. I thought your drawer pullout fully to access back couple of inches was spot on. The height of hutch would benefit me but that was a very small item in the pro column. I was still trying hard to justify the cost so to compare I walked over to the husky 56” which my son n law got while on sale last Christmas. That’s when the store associate came over to attach the price tag to the top box of the Milwaukee, lol. I love Milwaukee but this particular box is an easy no for me. Thanks for your time and effort in letting us know your thoughts in this video. Stay safe

I've kicked the idea around for a while on this box. I own rental properties and over the years as I've done demolition and remodeling, I have purchased ungodly amounts of tools. I'm not thrilled by 18ga, but it's just going to sit in my garage at home, so I don't really need anything super heavy duty or secure.
Up until a few days ago, Home Depot had the lower half yellow tagged for $599 (25% off). It sat for about two weeks and I approached the store manager with an offer of $300. She was willing to mark it down another 25% (50% total ($400)) and I should have jumped right on it because it was gone the next day when someone came in and offered $50 less than the $599 they were asking. That one had some issues that needed work. The drawers would only open half way. Seemed like an easy fix for $400.
So, I think I'm just going to bite the bullet and buy the combo this week. Thanks for the review!

Good review way more in depth than I did, but I bought 2 56",2 lockers,& 61" bench. I also removed the computer panels. I actualy prefer larger drawers and wish they would make a center cabinet to set between upper & lower with larger drawers. Guess I was lucky all my locks work & skids were bolted together. I'm happy with the boxes and they are full of mostly Milwaukee tools.plannig on buying another 56"+ locker, probably 52" bench. Kind of a Milwaukee finatic. But they don't make everything and there are a lot of good tool companies out there.

I just bought this box from Home Depot. Retired military mechanic with 21 years of experience in diesel maintenance. I would have to agree with you on some points. It almost seems they rushed the production of this box. I was not crazy at all to see the rails for the drawers were riveted to the side of the box; would have liked to see something like the snap on rails which Snap-On uses on their KRL series of tool boxes. The addition of the built in power strips is a nice feature giving you so flexibility with cordless automotive tools or power tools you may use while conducting repairs on equipment / vehicles. I didn’t like the rail on the bottom big cabinet; due to it being mounted 3/4 of the way towards the right of the drawer. So if you put any significant weights like I did on my with socket kits it will tend to drag on the bottom support beam just below the drawer. They should have added another support beam on the left hand side, this way the weight capacity would have been balance more effectively. Don’t really care for that tool bracket which is supposed to hold tools externally, I think the overall idea is neat. Just not very well thought out,
The lid on my box is also not centered. There is a 3/8” gap on the left side and a 1/4” gap on the right. Furthermore, the height is different also on the front corners of the lid versus the side metal sheets / arms. Therefore, my overall impressions are this would be an outstanding box for a technician who is starting out in the maintenance industry and is not able to afford the ridiculously priced mobile truck tool boxes.

I know this is an old video but... I will note something on drawers and sizes. I just recently purchased the 61" mobile workstation to go with my (pretty sure 46" toolbox). I was back and forth between two different husky stations and the Milwaukee. I won't go into all the reasons why I chose the Milwaukee, but the drawers was one of the big reasons. The main husky contender had a hole bunch of slim drawers. I went with the Milwaukee because, even though it has less drawers, they were deeper. I run into the problem with my main tool box of the drawers not being deep enough to accommodate some of my tools. Sure, sockets and wrenches and screw drivers aren't deep, but adding in impact guns, kits that have cases (fuel pressure regulator, compression/leak down tester, angle grinder, etc.), that taller drawer makes the difference. So while you are right (I would have liked to have seen a 3rd row of drawers, at least up top), the size and shape of the drawers also hits a lot on preference and usage. Long story short, make sure to consider how you are going to use your box influence what box you go with. And yes, I own a number of Milwaukee tools, but I am not a Milwaukee fan boy. Nice to see a legit review of Milwaukee stuff not just fluffing them.

    So I see the video is about a year old or so. Moving on, I hope you can give me your opinion. I think your review of the Milwaukee 56” chest was phenomenal. Here’s my deal;
At HD, saw this 56” combo set , top chest and bottom cabinet, I absolutely had to have it. So by the time I go to purchase the combo HD only had the top chest available. That’s it, no bottom cabinet with casters in any store anywhere. Talking with the hardware associate, he apologizes and tells me I can order the bottom cabinet if I wanted but in the same sentence he states “what am I going to do with all these top chests” he says he has all over the store. I got to thinking and spoke with a manager. Long story short; since there was no bottom cabinet with casters to go along with the top chest I asked what kind of price can we do. Originally the top 56” chest (part # 48-22-8558) sells for $599, was already marked down to $499. The price of $249.99 get thrown at me. Obviously since I had to have this just a few weeks prior, I of course jump on it, sold! Loaded it up, got it home and here it sits still boxed up and strapped to dolly. Early this morning I set out to garage and had plans on ripping into this thing. My hesitations are as follows; I obviously cannot load up the chest with tools without having the bottom cabinet and not forgetting to mention we are moving in 2 weeks, house is sold. So this hesitation has me reading reviews/videos for my new 56” chest. Your video was the first thing I came across. Here are my thoughts, wonders etc. You mentioned you preferred the husky 56” because 1.) the price difference between Milwaukee and Husky is just not worth it on Milwaukee end and 2.) you like the drawer layout on Husky better, I completely agree as well. So regardless of the $250 I got the Milwaukee chest for, WTF do I do? I’m going to end up paying $699 for Milwaukee bottom regardless, if I keep top. Or do I return the 56 Milwaukee top and get 56 husky combo? Or, or buy Milwaukee 48” combo? I apologize for the length of this and thank you for time if you happen to reply.

    • @WorkshopAddict
      @WorkshopAddict  4 года назад

I cannot answer everything for you, but I can tell you that Milwaukee seems to make "runs" of tool chests and then when they sell out, they are not to be found again. This has happened over and over. So you might not find a bottom if you wait too long.
Getting the Milwaukee 56" for about 1,000 is a decent deal. I still dislike some things, but I like it enough to think that would be an OK deal. More than that and you just really have to want the red.
You can use the top section to put on a home made cart or workbench. But seems sort of like a waste. I would rather have the bottom.
The 56" husky is nice, try to find it on sale and it is really nice. Not as well built in the caster areas, but nice.
Pending the price on the 48 HD Cobo, I would look at that compared to the 56" husky, unless a deal could be found on the bottom.

I can open it with the key, but then you cannot take the key out. When I punch the combination in on the top box, it works fine, and the green light only beeps once, but when I do it on the bottom lock, the green light beeps twice so I guess I’m going to have to re-search That.

@@WorkshopAddict I got lucky. I still haven't gotten a replacement. so fed up I took it apart again. the lock has a micro solenoid that retracts out of a slot in the cylinder. apparently the reason it fell apart is the cylinder was put in 180 degrees rotated from where it has to be. it could never have locked. I thought "no way" so I completely took it all apart, turned it like I thought it should be. it works. there's no way for it to have turned. it was assembled wrong. its a cool looking mechanism but for the future I'm looking into what to replace it with. its not listed as a part to buy from Milwaukee. but its got to be expensive. that solenoid is about 1/2 long 3/16 diameter. then the circuit board.
I took pics, I wasn't in the mood to video and post it though I really should have. Pain in az to get it out of the box, and then apart. a few 1mm screws to not loose.
I do like the box, does what I wanted, holds stuff and mounts for chargers, all that.
If I knew what I was getting into with the lock, I probably would have hunted for the smaller Milwaukee set.

Husky is good for home garages, not for being beat on in a shop.

Seems good so far. My only complaint is about buying such a massive box. If I did it again I might buy 2 smaller boxes because they would be easier to transport. I like that it only has 4 wheels rather than the 6 wheels on the husky (less awkward to move)

Milwaukee really jacked up the price on these. I bought the 52" High Capacity Mobile Work Bench 3 years ago for under $500 at HD. This was the former style without the silver drawer handles and corner bumpers. I think these retail now for around $800 which is a rip-off. Glad I bought mine when I did...

@Workshopaddict, I guarantee you that's because that Box is built by the exact same Company that builds the Husky Box. It cost you $400 extra because it is Black & Red and has Milwaukee & a Lightning Bolt on it. I hate the Drawer Layout. When I look.for a Box, i prefer at least 3, preferably 4 full width Drawers, and 1 of those Drawers (my Socket Drawer) has to be around 5-1/2" to 6" deep. All my Sockets are stood up on Hansen and Westling Machine Socket Trays/Stands, and I have quite a few Extra Deep Sockets, which are 5" alone not counting the the Tray. I like 1 Drawer all Sockets, 1 SAE Wrench Drawer, 1 Metric Wrench Drawer, and 1 Drawer that's all Screwdrivers, and i want them all full width due to the amount of these Tools that I have. That's just me though! Good Video! I know there is no way i would lay out 15 Ben Franklins for that Box, and I'm a big Fan of Milwaukee. I would buy a Husky over that. However, I actually prefer Snap On Epiq. Not everyone can swing that though.

I'd love to have this box for my shop box. There's a few positives that I was really looking at for this specific box. Was the pre-drilled holes for chargers on the sides of the box. As well as it would stand out in the shop as most people have black colored boxes from various brands. The electronic locks was something I wasn't necessarily a plus for me, but it is a nice feature. Be nice to see if you get the bottom boxes lock to work because that would concern myself as well.

  • @ryanpastor2412

The material thickness between Husky and Milwaukee is night and day. The Husky is way lighter of a box. i think that is the price difference. Milwaukee has a nice powder coat finish as well. I purchased the 46" top for 350 and a 56" bottom for 600. Both were marked down. so for just under 1000 this was the best deal i found.

I have the same box and my bottom lock had the same issue. I had to take the lock apart and there is a circular plate that I had to spin 180 degrees. I assume this is a mistake during manufacturing because the bottom lock works fine after I did that. I got my box for $1100 so it was easy for me to overlook a few of the things I didn't like about it. $1500 does seem a tad high. Good review

    • @coachmatt216

I did as well, but 2 weeks ago. They play with the bottom cabinet prices ($699-$899). What determines it? Who knows. I would not buy for $1,500. I needed an extra box in our shop and it was cheap and available now. If I had to buy a cheap box (not SnapOn or Mac, etc), then I’d get the Husky 56” heavy duty box. It’s the same box, $500 less, and have plain old barrel locks. I actually have both of those boxes and I’d buy the Husky again and again. The Milwaukee....it’s OK but only because I didn’t pay full price. Don’t lock it.

I have a 52" Dewalt box set.... same deal made in the same factory as the Milwaukee and Husky. They are all made by International if I'm not mistaken.... who also makes the exact same box. When I have the chance to do my final size and quality toolbox upgrade the Dewalt will be my at home tool storage unit. My first tool box set that is a Mastercraft (from Canadian Tire) is 10x the box in every possible way other than overall size to hold more.
Better re enforced frame, thicker panels, much better slides, actually came from the factory with a handle up top to open the top of the box (only the Dewalt boxes decided not to add that.), can hold more weight per drawer and drawers aren't as flimsy.
I needed the size upgrade and the tools are where your money should go first primarily as a tech. For the money you can get a much better box than those and for substantially less money those boxes would make much better sense

I have tried looking up any and all relevant info in regards to specifications and what I know is that 1st Gen specifies 20 gauge steel body with all welded construction VS. 2nd Gen specifies 18GA but mentions nothing regarding welds or angle iron etc. I am a bit concerned about the folded sheet metal construction and drawer slides being riveted on the 2nd Gen box -- but is the 1st Gen built any better? Any insight would be much appreciated. Thank you!

@@JahRidley If there is even a difference in the metal thickness anymore.... I am unsure. Most Husky Boxes all claim 16 Ga. Husky and Milwaukee are made in the same plant. The HC box is just that, High Capacity, so it is deeper. Not much is different other than some trim. Both boxes have some thicker metal on the bottom where the casters attach, but that is about it. You are paying for the depth.

After watching this video, I was leaning towards the Husky, but then I watch your review on the 46” Milwaukee tool box. On the 5:37 mark of that video you mention that Husky tool box didn’t have as much quality as the Milwaukee. So my question is, did Milwaukee drop the ball on quality from the 46” to the 56”? In this video you said the both the Husky and the Milwaukee boxes quality was about the same. I saw both boxes at Farm & Fleet and the 56” and 46” Milwaukee look similar. Currently HD has the Husky selling for $998, and I can get the 56” Milwaukee for $1075. Knowing the two prices for each box, which one will you recommend buying?
