Manduka yoga mats are awesome, but sometimes they can be slippery when you first buy them. Here is a quick video to help you "unslip" your Manduka Mat!
Hi, thanks for a good tip. But what if I don't live on sunny place on the Earth? Here is mostly rainy and cloudy. Can I leave my new mat to dried out just in the room? Or it will be enough just to start practicing on it on daily basis as I do normally (35min)?
I did let the salt sit on the mat for 24 hours and vigorously scrubbed it with a damp cloth after. It was even more slippier than at first so I had to google for a solution. I found out that using dish soap and scrub it and washed it off in the shower (or just use a garden hose) should do the trick, which it did! its now amazing and not slippy at all. Its this stupid factory film that needs to break off which is oily, and the soap removes it right away.
Got my mat and put in sun yesterday leaving it overnight. Scrubbed with salt today. And am letting it sit with salt on it. Asked the question below and would appreciate your suggestion. Thanks
Mama, you won't need the sun, you'll just want the mat to dry out. Also practicing everyday will help your mat break in better than anything else you can do!
Hey sorry for the delay. You can do it once or more than once, but the goal is just to get the "film" off the top layer of the mat. Once its broken in, it usually only gets better.
@Vibetality I want to know if I should do this before using it for the first time. And why do I have to? I do not understand what this is for. What will happen to my mat after doing that?
@Vibetality What is the use of salt supposed to be? I do not understand. I can not translate the title well into Spanish. I have a new manduka mat, just arrived. Having to do what is shown in the video?
Ummmm NO you rub the salt in, let it sit for 6 hours then rub again then after around 18 - 24 hours wash it off and dry it, you dont LEAVE the salt on ..
Hey thanks for the reply. You might want to check into that again. Here's a link to the article they made after we posted our video. ;) www.manduka.com/blog/2016/02/04/break-in-your-pro-like-a-pro/
My manduka mat came with instructions to cover with salt, let sit for 24 hours, and scrub off with water! But I like the letting it warm up with sun first! Thanks for the tips!
Thanks brother, just ordered my Manduka yoga mat and will follow your instructions once I receive it!

Yeah, it's cold here (and windy) right now in Maryland and I want to get practicing... what are your thoughts?

Hi Sophie, the superlite travel mats shouldn't need to be broken in. They are pretty great right out of the package!
Thanks so much for this video I will try it!

Do I need to break in the Manuka x yoga mat
I have tried this on my manduka eko lite, do tou think it would harm it in an bad way?
@Vibetality
Hello, is it necessary to do what is shown in the video when you have a new mat? that is, before you use it you have to do that?
Doing this will help your mat to serve you better. Its not something that has to be done, but if you don't do it, the mat will provide less grip.
Thank you!!!!!

If I can use other salt except sea salt to break mat please? normal salt or ice cream salt, can I use it?
Do you do the salt scrub more than once to break in? If so, how often and for how many days, weeks, or months?

Once should do the trick!

See previous response.
Put sea salt on. Rub twice. Leave the salt on it for 24 hours!!!! Take it off with a wet towel. Leave to dry off completely before use.
Would this also work for the superlite mat?
Hey Sophie - Superlites shouldn't need to be broken in.
@Vibetality

Doing this will help your mat be the best! If you don't do it your mat might have some slip for the first few months.
I understood now. Thanks friend! I'm going to do it
I have a Manduka X and it is slippery. Is it okay to break in that one too the same way?
Shouldn't be an issue, but the X shouldn't need a break in either.
Vibetality thank you!
I could not return it unfortunately and it is still slippery😓 I don't recommend that one for anyone.
thx!

You are not breaking in the mat, your are not removing a film, - you are putting on a non-slip salt coating to the mat.
Um. Manduka says that you should NOT do anything that you recommended.... are you the ultimate yoga mat breaker inner?
