How Whales Fight Climate Change

  • Can whales help fight climate change? Research done into the impact of whales on the climate seems to show just that. But whales aren't exactly trees or plants doing photosynthesis... so how do they help capture greenhouse gases?
    Well, it's complicated but the answer lies in a mysterious and magical process called a trophic cascade. A process in which our main character, the whales, play a crucial role...
    In this video we look into how whales can have a positive impact on the fight against climate change by acting as a "blue carbon" solution.

    I will never begrudge an indigenous group for hunting one whale a year which feeds an entire community for that time - thank you for emphasising that mass farming fishery practices and plastic are the problems to be tackled here - too often people seeking to improve the world harmfully demand that everyone regardless of actual practice and location stop eating meat of all sorts, not taking into account true sustainable practices (such as seasonal eating and only taking what is needed with consideration for what each creature in an environment in turn needs) and what is both needful and more sustainable in areas that would otherwise be considered food deserts.

    I eat fish, but primarily freshwater fish, caught within 20 miles of where I live. There are strict rules about what species of fish can be caught and at what ages and seasons, so I'm confident that it is being monitored for sustainability by the parks service here.

    The Medical Medium says the only fish that are really worth eating (because of mercury levels in all the other fish, sharks, etc.) include Atlantic Salmon (because of Fukashima), River Trout, and Sardines. I love Salmon but will cease eating Salmon to support the whales. Thanks Dwuart (forgive me if I mis-spelled your name) and Mossy Earth for taking up this cause and educating the public with a bunch of jumping off points & actions steps for what we can do in our own lives to support the Whales! Hi, I loved learning about whales and the effect they have on our eco system. That said, I don't think the problem lies inherently in eating fish. The problem seems to lie on the industrial side side of fishing/our food production.
    As you mentioned in another video, we as individuals can't necessarily do a whole lot on an individual level to avert climate problems. In some ways, I feel climate change is driven by our need for convenience.
    Pre industrial revolution, people hunted and fished without catastrophic climate problems. The industrial revolution in many ways has left us as a population more dependent and less capable to take care of our own very basic needs.
    Wildlife habitat gets destroyed for farmland and grazing etc. Marine ecosystems are getting impacted because of the way fishing takes place nowadays along with all the plastic.
    All that said, I think marine wildlife sanctuaries are a great idea. If we have them on land, we can have them in the ocean.

    the fact he says eating fish is terrible for health just took all credibility he may have had away. fish is very good for your health; Harvard did a study that shows eating 8 ounces of fish a week reduces your risk of heart disease by 36 percent, which is the number one cause of death in women. For women who are pregnant if they eat fish, it also helps with the baby's cognitive development and eye health/development. there is good information in this video but his information that fish is bad for you is dead wrong.

    • @gnat5278
      @gnat5278 Год назад

      yeah the way he said it was pretty bad but so is your point. a single study does not definitely prove that something is good or bad lol. eating fish is good for you if it has a net positive effect- like if you are are deficient in protein, omega fatty acids, and other micronutrients that can be supplemented by eating fish. if you’re allergic to fish, it’s bad for you because you could die. if you eat low quality fish that is high in mercury and has poor nutritional value it’s bad for you. if you have limited food source options and fish is available to you then it’s good for you to eat fish. nuisance is boring but so is missing the point

    The only suggestion I would have for this concept was to Simply make it illegal to eat rare fish and where species that are going extinct and species that have been having over feeding and eating species and making it that some species in different areas and Country would have different species that would be an allowed to be eaten as they would be mainly eaten by animals the only thing that could happen simply regulating the types of fish we could eat a would fix the option and we wouldn't have to directly stop eating fish as it's almost impossible is the main food source in if we stop eating fish overhunting will start happening either way humans do need fish our race is a worldwide race send that we don't have any auction I can see here is B eating species in regions that are harming regions like species that are not native to Regions only in that region they're not native to God be the only option I would see here

    I would probably do some exceptions (once or twice a year) for earth animals if I was sure (and that means witnessing it with my own eyes, not trusting any label) that the animal lived outside and had the opportunity to live a majority of its lifespan before I ate it.(so no baby animal in my plate ever) But I live in a city and I shop for my food so animal flesh is out of the menu for me.
    So... yeah that is the limit I put for myself right now.

    I eat fish very occasionally because it is good for my health and not bad for the environment in low quantities. I am never ordering filet a fish . I hate the competition created by fishing companies whose employees don't just fish for their own sustenance but must meet the demands of feeding a large market of consumers. Consumers which have little biomass accumulation from the environment in which they reside. If more of us took care of the environment around us with the intention of biomass accumulation we wouldn't depend so heavily on these fishing companies. These fishing companies would also profit more per fish and the demand for the quantity of fish would go down which would improve the quality and the diversification of fish. Where we stand fish will eventually go extinct and that would be extraordinarily depressing. I think a very easy law to regulate this would consist of limiting the number of fish which is legal to sell in each fiscal quarter. And more importantly establish ecological protectorates under frequent surveillance by the department of the interior and fire anyone with family or previous work experience with fishing industries with astronomical fines proportional to the weight of each vessel. post:also net restrictions would be perfect.

What I meant in this video is mass farmed fish and above all fish coming from overexplored fisheries is bad for the environment. For the health side of things I was referring to the high levels of mercury found in some fish species such as sharks, orange roughy, swordfish and ling. Maybe I should have been clearer.
