    I am sorry, but I am bit confused about what you said in the end where you said you started the portfolio with $5000. From the numbers you gave it seems that you invested $1200 in the first month, and then $1200 (or more) every month after that for 17 months and you haven't taken any money out. So, the 5k you started with would have lasted you 4 months before you started to put in more money. So I am a bit confused when you say you started the portfolio with only 5k, when you have actually invested much more over 17 months. The returns you got are pretty impressive, but I don't understand why there was a mention of $5k in the video.

  • @shanepringle

    One point about the 10% average return that some may not see as obvious, is that the average return is often times very different than your actual return. For example, let's say you invest $100. In year 1, market goes down 30%, and you have a balance of $70. In year 2, it goes up 50%, and your balance will be $105. The average annual return over those 2 years is 10% (net 20% divided by 2 years), but your actual average return is an annual 2.5%. Folks should keep this in mind for retirement, and should have a large enough portfolio (and some cash) to weather the storm like in 2008, where it took 4-plus years to recover back to its pre-crash value.

    • @solracer66

      It would be interesting also to know how to handle windfall profits where almost everything is capital gains. I've heard that the rich often just borrow against their portfolio rather than selling which both allows them to continue to receive gains and avoid taxes at the cost of paying a small amount of interest. That sounds very risky but it would save a ton in that situation, well at least until you die but then the cost basis immediately adjusts then for your heirs.

    Hello, teachers! I'm already registered your class! :)
    I have a doubt: when I calculate the contribution to my portfolio, I set an amount per month.
    Later, in some simulations, when I virtually played a bit more, I found that contribution per week brings in 30-40 years a more extensive portfolio size than a monthly payment.
    What did I miss here? :/ I didn't get it!
    Thanks!

    • @OurRichJourney
      @OurRichJourney  3 года назад +2

      Thanks for watching and commenting! I'm not sure if I understand you question correctly. Is it when you do investment simulations, after 30 or 40 years, you have more than the size of your monthly payment? If that's the case, keep in mind that your portfolio has to pay for your annual expenses. But, even so, even if you invest for 30-40 years before pulling it out, it's very possible that your portfolio will grow much larger than a 4% withdrawal rate! :)

Currently in March 2023, three banks of gone bankrupt in the US and stock market is decreasing everyday. I have 70 K cash I saved and am ready to invest but I was wondering if I should wait a month and see if the recession crash happens? This would make it cheaper to buy for me than invest all that money now. What is your advice?

We have approx 5k in crypto and 5k in shares. With higher interest rates we can save very little eg $50 week currently. What would be best way to move toward fire. Pay off mortgage or invest or both. Not sure how to increase our income at this stage but we are trying.

      Despite his legendary stock-picking abilities, Warren Buffett remains a staunch supporter of index funds. He favors them over most other investing options.
      The Oracle of Omaha even said he’s instructed the trustee in charge of his estate to invest 90 percent of his money into the S&P 500 for his wife after he dies, Buffett told CNBC’s Becky Quick in an exclusive interview on “Squawk Box” on Monday.
      “There’s been no better bet than America,” he says.
      Here’s why Buffett’s favorite investment can be a smart choice for almost anyone, especially those who are new to the market.
