MORE A380s? - British Airways Prospective Order

- British Airways was once interested in more Airbus A380s, but why did the order never materialise and was it for the better considering the economic conditions that would follow in the 2020s?

BA wanted to buy all of Malaysia's A380s but the cost to retrofit them to CAA standards was going to cost millions, then covid came along and the project was scrapped.
should've built a 2nd runway at Gatwick .......... but as usual the local residents squashed it
yeah well, welfare can come first. I find it more eco to fly an A380 than adding another frequency
Yes I agree the second hand prices for the A380 are very good so British airways definitely doing the right thing by buying more of the A380S
They are not buying more. They were considering it before covid but not anymore.
Thanks Dj for this one!!
AIrbus shut down the production of the A380, period.
There are lots of used ones floating around, cheap.
There sure is demand for a high passenger capacity jet in the aviation industry. And you are right, it won't be the A380 in the first place as it makes no sense financially.
And demand for such jets is still covered by them to such a degree, that designing and building a similar sized jet can't be justified for many years.
Probably, demand will never exceed the justification limit? But even if, it won't be a four engine design anyways, nor with the massive volume the 380 came up with.
I wonder has British Airways looked at buying the A380’s that formerly belonged to China Southern, Malaysia Airlines and Thai Aurways.
I know that one China Southern A380 went to the new startup airline , Global Airlines.
Hi fly did have a go.
Talking from the perspective of ground staff at LHR, absolutely BA should have taken up 2nd hand a380s. In fact, its still a rumour among staff that they are still looking in to it. Ba's A380s are overworked and rarely have downtime for regular/minor maintenance and "touch-ups". They are plagued with constant technical problems with a parts supply chain issue and all too often, an a380 service is cancelled as a result of tech issues and lack of spare aircraft, causing chaos in the terminal.. We pray that one day we will have more, just to fill in the gaps when one has a technical issue.
Second-hand 380s will be hugely profitable - because of the very low depreciation charge on the P&L.
hugely?
@@Flugzeuge4KYep - pre-loved planes were going for about £40 million.
@@well-blazeredman6187 but you have to refurbish and the actually fill them year round
Cabin refurbishment is a choice and not a necessity. The maintenance work to get a plane back into service isn't huge. Demand for air-travel is high and the 380 popular.
Global Airways is on the cusp of operating, with some 'pre-loved' 380s. Its main problem will come in 10-15 years' time, when it has to replace them.
@@well-blazeredman6187 LOL! That global airlines nonsense will not last one winter flying those gas guzzlers out of Gatwick with no brand, reputation or connecting partners. Did you see the photo of the ex China Southern at cruising alt with its gear down? If British Airways are struggling maintaining the A380s then there is no way that Global will have the supply chains and infrastructure to keep them running an efficient operation.
My understanding is that the A380 needs quite a high occupancy of seating for a flight to break even or turn a profit. BA would have to been very sure that demand existed on specific routes to press ahead. Ultimately if global flying demand increases at its predicted rate, and notwithstanding the potential for growth at smaller regional airports, I can see a significant future need for a double deck plane. Maybe not within the next decade, but the point will come. A re-engineered, lighter more efficient A380 will be required. In the meantime it is shame that the programme was discontinued but the point was made. Airbus proved to Boeing that it can and will match them with new aircraft types, even if the current A380 proved a bit of a dead end.
I'm pretty sure Air India might also acquire A380s in the future
That will not be happening.
Why would Air India want to have used A380's in need of a retrofit?
They have plenty of new, fuel efficient planes on the way. If they need more capacity, they can do this crazy thing known as adding a second flight. This also makes them more attractive as they have more flexible timings.
Wasn't this first shown about 2 years ago ?
I think BA could have added a modest number to the existing fleet, slot scarcity at Heathrow is a real concern but BA also retired the entire 747 fleet during Covid which drastically reduced capacity (the number of aircraft equivalent to the whole of Virgin Atlantic) the A380 therefore represents a bit of a shortcut. The caveat to this of course though is availability and the secondhand market carries maintenance risk and high servicing costs but with careful sourcing from airline with minimal pressurisations such as Air France or Thai vs Emirates or Singapore Airlines it could have helped BA especially either the delay to the 777-X so delayed reducing the ability of that type plugging the capacity gap created by the premature 747 retirement.
I think British airways should have gone ahead with buying more of the A380S but two things that I noticed one you say that emirates is retiring the A380S from their fleet that isn’t correct because they are upgrading them with even better seats and new cabins and much more than that and they are keeping their fleet of A380S until sometime in the 2040S as British Airways they have already placed orders for other A380S which other airlines are not keeping so they are adding more A380S to their fleet anyway so most of the information in your video isn’t accurate at all
Would the A380 programme been cancelled, if Airbus had offered a freighter version?
They can ask Air France to sell their A380's ? They dont use them
AF A380s were all scrapped. They’re now Pepsi cans
BA A380s have been hit with technical problems, cancellations and delays.
0:16 "outlier" 😊
No real info.
Love u British Airways,Emirates always number one.
I've noticed in ALL your videos that you somehow jump cut your audio.
What was that all about ?
He adores talking a lot without saying much
This is as we say in Germany 'Schnee von Gestern' = OLD NEWS. Filler...
British Airways ( IMO) made the right call in not buying more A380s . They need to stick with what they have and move forward with the airplanes ✈️ that they have in their fleet. Also, with whatever budget they have, make sure that those planes are running properly and take care of their employees. Don't spend money on a plane that will be outdated in a couple of years but invest in the future of aviation travel. 😊🇬🇧
This man's use of english is just annoying. I thought you Aussies knew how to use the language.
Dj isn't quite as good as he used to be 😢. He needs to get back to to producing content about real aviation issues. Anyone into aviation knows the a380 topic has moved on. Rubbish.
Totally agree
Long live the A-380 !
BA are more likely to sell or scrap their existing fleet than expand it. Entire operation is a nightmare - mx, despatch reliability, crewing inflexibility, commercial over capacity.....
Aer Lingus have ordered 10 secondhand A380s to be exploited on it's Dublin (DUB) London (LHR) route and during the high season Dublin (DUB) NYC (JFK) route . EI is to confirm this order before the end of the month .
lol , that makes no financial sense to buy A380’s for use i high season .what the utilisation rate on a plane like that.? 30-35% at best? Better off wet leasing off someone like Air Belgium for the peak season…
