I LOVE seeing this painting. It reminds me of myself. Jesus is the light pouring through the window. Thank you. USA

This painter is virtually unknown in America, so was interested in learning about him. Although Spitzweg shows the poet's many signs of poverty, it is interesting to compare this work with the work of the Spanish painter Murillo who painted barefooted street urchins with tattered clothes and dirty barefeet. The poet's clothes look fairly decent to me and although the room is messy, it does not appear unclean. It seems to be a bit sentimental in its approach and I am not sure if we are supposed to feel sorry for the poet or not as he does seem engrossed in his work and does not appear sad. The painting is done in tones of brown, tan and white as is Murillo's "Boys Eating Melon and Grapes" . It is good technically, but seems more of a period piece than a great work of art. Thanks for making me think of art this morning.
