I remember my parents giving me a pictorial encyclopaedia for Christmas one year… I was about 6 or seven years old….this picture was probably the first real painting that really captured my attention ….I remember thinking the power of story telling….obviously back then they didn’t have televisions, so they created powerful visuals highlighting a moment in time….this particular artist has a body of work which conveyed a Flemish life style a few hundred years ago, yet many of the narratives still stay the same…ie, the world wants to keep building up= the tower of bable….over a hundred Dutch proverbs….still some of the proverbs we use today , although Britain do have their own set of proverbs….people surviving the bleak winter months….if you ever get a chance to check this artist out , it’s definitely worth a look….one of my favourites along with Heronimous bosh, another Flemish painter from around the same time frame

This painting is “saying” a lot. What I like most about it, is what it appears to be conveying overall-death comes to us all. Or, in death, we are all equal. No amount of money, status, title etc. can save you. Another aspect of this painting is like, is the various ways the individuals in the painting deal with their impending doom. Some, spend it, as with the woman in the bottom right, playing music, living the last moment doing something that maybe brought them joy. Another attempts to fight with a sword against the inevitable. But, masses, go willingly into the casket shaped box. Like sheep to the slaughter.

Few paintings can transmit despair so efficiently, like shisu saving guts from crows on anguish due to a miscarriage fearing new chance be taken from having guts along the mix of the vulture girl photo with him

Can we each relate to this in some fashion and form? Tragedy is unavoidable we realize together

The true canvas depicting Death Militant, no escape. What i like is how the two lovers of all the characters on the canvas enjoy a moment of peace and joy, love is the only thing capable of defying death. A most horrifying and brutally honest work.

The disturbing subject matter of this painting is quite appropriate as Ukraine is being invaded and the whole world is watching a bloody and unnecessary war unfold.
