  • Don Carson delivered a message during TGC21 titled “Our Empathetic High Priest.”
Focusing in on three passages from Hebrews chapters 4-7, he emphasized three major points as it pertains to Christ’s role as our Great High Priest:
-He is able to encourage us to persevere despite our weakness, brokenness, and sin.
-He is able to encourage us by anchoring our hope, in his immutable promise and oath.
-He is able to encourage us by being uniquely qualified to save us completely.

We have a great high priest who is compassionate to us....we are not alone and we can't complain and say there is no one who understand my pain.....Jesus is our Precious High priest.

Why would DA Carson - a respected theologian and pastor - deliberately use the wrong translation of “empathy” rather than the “sympathy”? Is it perhaps because empathy is so strongly linked to the cultural narrative of virtue signaling? Not only is empathy not a virtue extolled in this passage, it is in fact a word/concept not found at all in the Bible. The virtue is sympathy, to “feel with”.

That's a bold claim to suggest without any evidence.

@@aslan2709 I guess you think the KJV is also the wrong translation as it doesn't say sympathy.

@@aslan2709 No evidence of your claim of virtue signalling, no error highlighted in the talk he gave, and nothing to say on my point about the KJV. He used the NIV, which isn't a surprise based the connection he's had with the publisher Zondervan. That all suggests it just boils down to you having a personal issue with Carson himself or TGC in general.
