  • Every music lover has that one good song or album that's ruined by a shitty time or person. For Tony Pizzuti of The Word Alive, 90s reggae-rock mainstays Sublime inspire rage and and poster-punching. TWA frontman, Telle Smith, gets real in this episode of APTV's Ruined Music-name dropping his first love-turned-heartbreak and the music that got him through their breakup. He also dishes dirt on which The Word Alive song he's completely over and what makes him cringe most about his band's past.

Sucks to hear Telle doesn't like 2012. Its not my fav song but I definitely look forward to hearing it live every time. It just gets the whole crowd moving, great song for the pit

Undead45433 and we’ll happily play it almost any headlining show. It’s just like watching the same movie you love over and over for 8 years. Doesn’t mean I don’t love it but breaks are good so it’s fun when we do :)

telletwa Totally understandable too! Im just glad you guys still play stuff off Deceiver. I love the new stuff and I've been jamming Violent Noise since it dropped, but it's always fun to hear the older songs live

At least he can talk shit about his own music, he knows he isn't perfect but damn that hurt me... I love that song, that album.

As much as I understand Telle not liking 2012, that was their biggest song at that point and was integral into making them as popular as they are. I sure am glad they wrote that song

2012 is what introduced me to you guys a while back, still love it to this day. It’s a shame that Telle wouldn’t like playing it live even if they did perform it 😕

Of course with a band that’s evolved so much, they’re gonna look back on some old songs and cringe a little cause of how different it is from what they write now.
But it’s normal for any artist not to like their old work, cause not only are they their own worst critic, but they went through the original writing process and the recording process for the song, not to mention playing it live countless times. It can be hard to enjoy your own music after all of that, but it’s good that The Word Alive is mature enough to still appreciate their old songs and not disregard them entirely.

2012 is a great song but it's the same thing with Asking Alexandria. If you asked them if any of them like The Final Episode they would all say no. They've probably played that song every tour for like 5+ years. Also, Avenged Sevenfold with Nightmare haha

I mean every single artist wil write a few songs or more depending on the individual that is worse lyrically then there average. Very single song wil not be great lyrically that is just how it is and that is due to the flawed nature of us as humans and especially creative individuals. So it`s understandable that Telle not liking one of he`s own songs or even an able to that album and every single one of those lyrics would most likely have been important to he`s growth as an artist and lyrecist.

Seriously, Fuck Weezer's version of that song. It's like listening to a shitty house band cover "buddy Holly". Turrible.

now they ruined their music style, its kinda lighter and there is no heavy music anymore....i think its not about getting older or being adult....but its about your consistent of making music.....i really appreciate to the band who's still on their genre
meanwhile, there is a good band name Ice Nine Kills who changed their genre from Punk Ska to Metalcore \m/

I personally didnt love the band until dark matter. Which forced me to check out the earlier stuff. Songs like entirety and life cycles were a good sign of things to come and im so glad they chose to focus on songs like that. I just couldn't get into stuff like 2012 which everyone seems to really dig.

So, "2012" was the song that turned me onto you guys and I loved it! Asking Alexandria had released an album just before you released Deceiver and despite the fact that I liked your music more, I felt like they owned the metalcore domain and over shadowed you that year. That being said, I forgot about you guys until this year and while your music has matured, their music has matured, and my taste in music has matured, I can say with surety that your new music is on another level of astounding! 2012 is kinda... Not a good song, and Asking Alexandria was better off with Denis. Frankly, I can't stand them. Which brings me to my ruined music, could just be my personal distaste for Danny.

AlcoholicThing ungrateful* haha kidding but for real, I’m not ungrateful I love ALL of our music. Just just not in the same place I was nearly 10 years ago when I wrote that and have played it thousands of times. I sure do appreciate it and people’s love for it, which is why we still play it on headliners for the OG fans. And when it goes off I love it the same as any song. Sorry new music isn’t for you but that’s how it goes 🤘🏼

Hey telle I wrote that post professing my love for the new record on facebook you guys said it was great thanks for that! Again i cant thank you enough for the record. Im trying to push people who are not giving it a fair chance to really give it another shot. Like I said previously we all loved DM so much the initial shock of just hearing new songs that werent trapped 2.0 threw people off. Once I got over that I just fell in love. The songs are deep and I love the layers. So many cool things I find each listen. Your melody's are absolutely amazing especially run away which has to be a single. I really hope you guys hang in there and continue to grind it out. I also hope that you continue to use this template of dark, moody, heavy, soft and great melody's for future records. Thank you again for giving me a record in 2018 that i can cherish forever.
