I met him a few times in the 90s and he would probably weep if you told him this. Part of me wants you to meet him, and part of me doesn't. If you meet him, you will probably not be able to say one intelligible word because the guy glows like an alien once you realize he's real and talking to you! When I was in 5th grade (1972 or 1973) a fellow student brought in a record for Show N Tell. He put the record on the Record Player, dropped the needle and out from the single speaker I heard “Hey hey mama say the way you move, gonna make you sweat, gonna make you groove”. The teacher immediately and forcefully yelled “TAKE THAT OFF” (stop the record). I’ve been a Zep fan ever since 🤘🏻.
Achilles Last Stand is a masterpiece that doesn't get all the credit like Kashmir and Stairway and many others. JPJ has one the best bass lines. Bonhams drumming is probably better than any other Zeppelin song. Page's guitar playing is creative and extraordinary. Laura Burns, I am right here with you at 53, 54 in 30 more days. :) Could not imagine a musical life without Zep and what RP has done for his entire life.
Hey Laura, I understand why you feel that way. Been a big fan most of my life, but for me plant has been a HUGE disappointment, especially since the 02 show in London 2010. Of which I was able to attend. His refusal to tour with the band for no good reason other than his ego is just wrong in my opinion. Especially after he said in one interview that it was because he didn't want "to be part of some jukebox " then he proceeded to tour with all kinds of musicians playing many different zeppelin songs. Some were just TERRIBLE performances because of the way that they changed them musically. He could've done a final tour after the 02 show, not for the money necessarily, but FOR THE FANS!!! They would have been able to control everything about the tour, venues, dates, etc...making it more comfortable for the band. Some have speculated that since he had SOLD the royalty rights to his portion of the zep catalog to Jimmy Page, that he wasn't going to do anything to promote the band itself anymore. I think that's its ego more than anything? Maybe I'm wrong?
Perhaps Presence isn't the album to sit and listen to with your girlfriend, but it's my second-favorite Zeppelin album (next to the debut album), and one of very few albums I can listen to over and over for literally months at a time in my car and never get tired of it. Achilles Last Stand is my favorite track, WAY UP LOUD. Jonesy and Bonzo just give an assault to the senses with their thunderous roar, and Page's layers of guitars just get me way down there. It's hard to imagine Plant belting out those vocals on crutches! My buddy and I used to acid-test car stereo speaker systems with that song at full blast. Our neighbors absolutely hated us for that! LOL
Very interesting hearing about Robert”s lady friend who didn’t want to be left alone with ‘Achilles Last Stand’ on. It was the first Led Zeppelin song I consciously heard when I was eleven years old in 1980. I borrowed ‘Presence’ from our local library because I was intrigued by the cover. I can remember the sensation of unease I felt when the needle touched the vinyl and that extraordinary, twisted riff started. The music was so intense and mysterious, I felt somewhat overwhelmed by it and didn’t really like it at the time. Just two or three years later I had grown up enough to take it all on board and became a teenage Zeppelin fanatic. But I always understood that there was far more to the group than bombast and volume. ‘Achilles Last Stand’ is one of their finest moments and when I listen to the rhythm section on that song I want to laugh as they are just so damn groovesome!
Rode my bike from Wales to the Sahara last year. Going over the immense Atlas mountains was incredible. Made the French Alps look like a kindergarten. We only saw 2 vehicles in two hours, both of them stopped and the driver asked us if we were okay. The Morrocon people were so kind. One of my favourite songs
Thank you, Robert Plant. Your music has lightened our lives since our youth. When life seems dull and culture seems derivative, we listen to you sing and we are happy again.
I really get what Robert is talking about now in my late fifties, about the Welsh mountains and it being "time". I get that when I return to the Florida everglades ( what's left of them) and alone with my companion pit Layna scan the horizon of a vast river of grass rippling in the breeze at sunset. And ponder "What a magical, beautiful and wondrous country it is,and those before who did the same in the mists of time. It's time.
Funny how In Through the Out Door was my first Led Zeppelin Album around 1980 or so and then I discovered the rest of the Albums. I never quite understood The album Presence until much later on........ and Now I Love it! I Love Performing and singing these songs that meant so much to me while I was growing up in my teen years and afterwards in celebration of this amazing and most innovative music. Thank you ROBERT for this interesting podcast and your ever evolving showcase of music which shows so much more emotion than anything ever else which I can relate to! 😉❤ Kim kuperschmid
Achilles Last Stand is Zep @ their most intense state in my opinion. Heavy is an understatement. Thank you again Robert with the insight, and I never viewed you as a "wedding singer"...
@John Cornell that's ridiculous! If you understand anything about led zeppelin, you should realize that after every album, the band would purposely move in a different direction musically. The SRTS is an electric guitar 12 string masterpiece. The tempo is constantly relaxing and then taking off again.....Obliviously with a Achillies, it starts off slow but jumps into a hard fast tempo that really never stops until the end. Where it graciously ends the way it began, genius! The band as a whole at their best!
I'm a big Zep fan from day one. I got to see them 4 times. 1970..75 and 77. For some reason I could never get into Achilles. I was a limo driver and I had just dropped off my passengers and I was free to go home. I was out in the burbs and on the highway heading to Vancouver. I probably lit one up and turned on the radio. Achilles Last Stand just happened to come on. Well all of a sudden...I got it... I got. The head started to move the foot went down on the gas pedal and I was off. I love Achilles. I was 26 wen I first saw them. I'm soon to be 76 and love this band....even more than when I saw them. You just get to appreciate them more as life goes on.
I was hoping Robert would talk about some Zeppelin era stuff. Especially deep tracks and Achilles Last Stand is one of my favorite tracks. In the Light would be another one. But like so many here, I could listen to Robert talk about this kind of thing all day long.
Presence is a masterpiece of timing and the reality of how well and how much Zep rehearsed. Only playing together and knowing each other can bring about that kind of nuance in synchronicity. Bonham has a real swinging southern jazz feel on some of the tracks but the riffs Page and Jones play, don’t get sloppy as they had a tendency to do sometimes. Tight but loose as they used to say, and Presence is the perfect musical statement to underline that descriptor of the mighty Zep. Really thankful for this podcast. 🙏🙏🙏
Bought my first cd player at the px before deploying to desert shield, along with Led Zeppelin Remasters. I had Zeppelin tapes, but this was my first cd purchase. When we (1st Armor Division) rolled out for desert storm, I cud the headphone wires and hardwired the cord to our commo system in our personnel carrier. Wore that thing out, but Achilles Last Stand was probably the most played song when we were rolling into Iraq.
I knew he like Morocco but... I´ve been there 9 times and I just love it, riding busses over the atlas , Marrakech , Essaouria and Agadir , Bitter bargain in the street with humorous Berber , great food , perfekt climat and a great atmosphear.
I've met Robert once and when I asked him about the song and tried to say some words about how intense it was, he told me the story with the girlfriend. Nice to hear it again here :)
Achilles is my favorite song of all time. It's got stiff competition, too...given the fact that I have listened to thousands and thousands of songs from many genres over my life of 61 years at this point.
Masterpiece song. And Presence is my favorite Zeppelin album. I think this album is less popular with mainstream audiences because it's kind of a progressive rock album. Most of the songs are pretty long and complex. This is an album for the connoisseurs.
I last saw Robert in Chicago at the "Taste of Chicago". I've never seen the lawn area so full as that concert. Robert mentioned during the show "The importance this town has had to him thru his life". I'd love to hear him elaborate more about what Chicago means to him musically.
I remember him saying something about watching the Knebworth version before the DVD came out and being almost physically uncomfortable - the supernatural power behind that version was really from another world.
IM from Australia Robert and things have changed since Perth ,you need to feel the spirit of the out back it is something you cant deny 40000 years of aboriginal culture is reason why. As you know people love you hear but go bush with a small crew and sit around the fire and relax and feel the dreaming ,the real spirit . Every zeppelin album takes me to a time in space, love you man.
"I'll talk to the dog about it..." bet it's not the first or the last time you've sought your dog's point of view. Ha. With each podcast, we slide a tiny bit closer to the joy that is your soul and its musical manifestation. How blessed we are that you share yourself so willingly with us. Blessings upon you, love.
Dig this i think it was way cool not only hearing some insights to ALS but plant talking a little about YES and Jon Anderson another insanely gifted group.
Funk????....Iron Maiden they have used and abused the blueprint of this song to the point of exhaustion to consolidate their Heavy Metal band status; especially in the use of the galloping bass. Add to this harmonized guitars and an epic theme and that's the formula from LZ legacy. This has nothing to do with Funk style.
Achilles last stand is a Fantastic song, & the 1st song that i heard after stairway, its raw & powerful, it has depth, & meaning, the thing about Zeppelin is that they have so many great songs, its really difficult to pick one over another, its my favourite, its up there with "the song remains the same", & Kashmir, yes its that good, all four of them are in tune with each other, as much as 4 musicians can be.
Each Zeppelin album is a masterpiece in its own right. 'Presence' was yet another different direction for the band, in a career that had often saw many different directions, and yet the band were very rarely ever given any credit by the critics for those experimental journeys into heavy, and light, Celtic, and Moroccan. Blues, and Rock. Classical, and Country. This was a band that could do it all, and they did. 'Achilles Last Stand' is one such breathtaking journey. Epic indeed.
Probably my most meaningful coincidence ever involves this tune. I had been the typical Zeppelin-obsessed kid, they were everything to me, I literally credit discovering their music as a young teenager as "waking me up." Some years later, I was a 22-year-old Canadian travelling in Greece and immediately became close with this amazing Athenian girl. She was/is a philosopher, and being around her completely changed my life again; while there I decided I would study philosophy, so being around the all these monuments of ancient Greece was just so meaningful to me. One day we went to visit her brother, right in the heart of old Athens, the Acropolis looming nearby, and as we walked into his apartment he was absolutely blasting Achilles Last Stand.
A true insight into the massive changes in awareness and Plant's influences, while carrying on and moving forward with the Zep project, even while disabled. A glimpse of fortitude, carving out the tunes we've all come to know and live. Presence? " Intense " really is the word.
I remember reading about the horrible accident in Greece. 1975 was obviously a very difficult year for Robert and his family. I'm glad he got through it, and wondering how Maureen is doing now? Sounds so painful. I hope she is doing well now. No easy way for this type of thing. Robert has had his share of tragedies. I am so glad he stuck with music, since his music in my opinion is very healing for others in difficult times, including myself, and I think for himself and family also. I have the greatest amount of respect for him and what he has endured and of his sharing his music and life moments with his fans worldwide who adore him. Thank you Robert for your amazing music and sharing of your personal information on these podcasts. Very generous of you. No wonder your fans think the world of you, rightfully so. I can't imagine a world without Led Zeppelin music as well as Roberts solo music. The best music on the planet. Again, Thank you so very much. You are much Loved. De from Portland Oregon.
My first ever album I ever purchased! Not a good song to come home to drunk and try to sleep with the "bedspins "guaranteed to take place! IT will make you puke!! Thank you Robert Plant!! Tea for One is a great blues song and is a challenge to play!!
Another interesting story. Thank you. I know about you, Maureen and the children in that horrible car accident. What I find admirable is how you still say Maureen's name with such love and respect. Looking forward to the next story with you & Matt.
I was always a passing Led Zepplin Fan. I had 4 on vinyl, and wouldn't change the channel if they came on the radio, but didn;;t spend much time seeking out anything else. I had never really heard of this song until a few days ago and I am AMAZED this didn't get the airplay in the 80's like all of the other great Zepplin songs. This is probably one of my favorite Zepplin songs now.
The reason I like music so much is that it takes a lot of people to put a show on and that unity has such a healing effect but more it helps you connect with a long lost energy. That is why Led Zeppelin and Robert plant send us away to me the imagation and empthany in song is life not sickness 🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈👏👏👏 And one heavenly song in hell 🌈😎

Since I was a teen in the 70's I loved Led Zeppelin. But Achilles Last Stand held me even till today. Besides its fantastic words and awesome sound, greater than any other band to me. I've had an affinity for the Song. I myself was injured in a crash in 94. In 2011 I became wheelchair bound. Been on disasince 2003. I know the destructive nature that serious injury tolls on a family. Your podcast about Achilles Last Stand made me cry because I do understand. Keep on getting out there Robert. Some of us LIVE vicariously through others and Led Zeppelin has given me years of enjoyment. A Lifetimes worth. I love you man.

Wow. Badass. To hear this all these years later is so inspiring for me as a musician. I think every rock musician I know began their journey as a lousy Led Zep cover act. Once heard, the music demands action from artistic people. If you didn't know how to play, then dammit, you learned.
Wow! Sorry your wife and you had to endure that pain and suffering, but what great work that came out of it. I listened to Achilles Last Stand with my guy friends often. So happy it's part of my musical upbringing. I am a chef and understand how it can be looking for that next fix creatively. Love hearing these stories. Thank you for sharing with us Robert Plant and thank you Matt Everett.
Jon Anderson turned Led Zeppelin onto Morocco and the desert…rad. Kashmir and Achilles and Tales From Topographic Oceans do sound somewhat similar, which I always knew from listening to all 3 for the past 40 years, thanks Robert for affirming it
You go to all of these amazing places, but when I think of Led Zeppelin, I kind of think of myself being stoned at the local park with friends, a frisbee, guitar, and believe it or not, a cassette tape player. Those were the days.
Zeppelin was a major part of growing up in the 1970's and 80's and still is for me..i would love to see them play a concert at madison square garden once more before i die..or any more band members get too old to do it.

I.m 62 years, like, Led Zeppelin 52 years, Robert Plant - grand vocal....
SUPER VOICE.... St Petersburg.Russia.
Sergey Smirnoff How could you like them for 52 years when we are currently celebrating 50 years of Led Zeppelin’s Music?

Robert Plant was one of the reasons I made my life about music. Thank You!
It's time.
Love the reference to "Tales of Topographic Oceans" by Yes....
Page did some work with YES. Two legendary bands with two great sounds.
@@markusantonio4866 Not Yes, only Squire and White.

Funny how In Through the Out Door was my first Led Zeppelin Album around 1980 or so and then I discovered the rest of the
Albums.
I know they don't like to be categorized as heavy metal which is their opinion but they are kind of fathers of it this might be the first thrash song
KidJohnnyC, In The Light...yes!
The side of physical with In the Light on it is the best side of recorded music.

Your ability to hear the whispers of all winds reminds me that there is a place calling ever so gently "come you will find You". Thank you Robert.💜✌
I agree.... its one of my fav Zeppelin albums - just so raw and close mic-ed. no frills here, just raw power.
My fave zep lp
He is still the Golden God in my book. Greatest singer with the greatest band EVER. They stand the test of time
Achilles at Knebworth was without a doubt, THE BEST THEY EVER WERE. PERIOD!!!
ROBERT PLANT FOREVER! LONG LIVE ROBERT PLANT!
Thank you for being on the planet. 🙂
Loving these Robert! Talk about the song remains the same movie
JPJ's bass is INCREDIBLE on this song.
Jpj definitely deserves the love his base planes brilliant in he's just he's more than just the glue in this band it's almost like The Hidden Hand
In the top 5 Zeppelin tracks …live performance at Knebworth was truly the band at its very best !👍
I'd love to hear him elaborate more about
what Chicago means to him musically.
It means blues, Chess records, Muddy Waters, Howlin Wolf etc
I always loved "Principles of Moments" .....
My favourite Zeppelin song, a real tour de force piece of music.
I remember him saying something about watching the Knebworth version before the DVD came out and being almost physically uncomfortable - the supernatural power behind that version was really from another world.
I like Plant’s comments about how good the musicians were, I think he is a great vocalist. I also really like the Presence album. It’s great.
Presence is my favorite album along with Physical Graffiti. Presence is pure hard driving rock interspersed with humor and blues.
Dig this i think it was way cool not only hearing some insights to ALS but plant talking a little about YES and Jon Anderson another insanely gifted group.
Achilles last stand , my favorite track on my favorite album, funk rock at its best
Dont put Led zeppelin in a box
Funk????....Iron Maiden they have used and abused the blueprint of this song to the point of exhaustion to consolidate their Heavy Metal band status; especially in the use of the galloping bass.
Add to this harmonized guitars and an epic theme and that's the formula from LZ legacy.
This has nothing to do with Funk style.
Funk? Umm, no.
Always annoys me when people slag Presence. It's probably the Zeppelin record I listen to most, along with 2 and 3
Can really relate to Percy's comments here - I was fortunate enough to visit Morocco back in the 70s, too. Different world back then.
Rip bob karcher we loved led 4 he is still on a stairway to his heaven....rest easy blood brother
Ha ha!! I thought I was the only one who's had the bedspins to this song and puked too!!
Robert Plant and Led Zeppelin are the Penultimates!!!
Great song great album
The reason I like music so much is that it takes a lot of people to put a show on and that unity has such a healing effect but more it helps you connect with a long lost energy. That is why Led Zeppelin and Robert plant send us away to me the imagation and empthany in song is life not sickness
🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈👏👏👏
And one heavenly song in hell 🌈😎
@Jim Yester g'day Jim how was your weekend? Who would of thought we would meet here just kidding You got to Amit Robert Plant helps put a little colour back in the rainbow 🌈👏 plus I like to not box music in to just one musician. ohh how did you like the podcast?😀. Guess down under needs to work harder 🌅🌈
@Jim Yester yep that's life just like the curves on the rainbow up and down the stronger the storm the more bright the rainbow can get a bit sea sickie 🌈🌈🌈 I adore these podcast helps us respect the hard work sight and emotions behind each song 😀
@Jim Yester thankyou Jim a lovely way to start the week by communication that is postive have a beautiful day 👏🌅🌈
Robert is so incredibly interesting to listen to. We all have our journeys but his really are some of the best to listen to. Thank you RP for another opportunity to hear about them🎸🙏❤️!
Ive been so in ahhhh of this man since I was a little girl I was born in "81 with parents that constantly said "get the led out"when other little girls loved NKOTB i luved him lol to the point my 2nd grade teacher called my mom into the school because i had doodled his name all over my folder. My mom referred to my 5"9 127lb high school self as "tall cool one" 😆😎 this man is an enigma to me i hang on his words an stories
Great memories of the presence album...
The performance of this at Knebworth is Zeppelin's greatest moment, in my opinion.
One of the heaviest Zeppelin songs, the live version from Knebworth (1979) is incredible.
My all-time Most FAVORITE Zep song!
Im a huge fan of robert plant he was in my country georgia at black sea arena and i can say well this was best day in my life i saw and listened person who was always in my dreams and wanted to see and listen but i thought it must be imposible. But now i can say last year i was at robert plants live
Great song and great album! Musically one of the best by the 'Zep Trio,' and the best 'wedding singer' I've ever heard!
I JUST LOVE IT!!! Robert, your music has brought light in times of darkness for me. You're the BEST!!! Thank you, love you....
Zeppelin is legendarny past .Tkanka so much . Zeppelin is also the band where many artist find their inspiration. The and ....I never stop. GREAT
Robert has been singing to my happiness every time. Wedding singer, I wish he had sang in our wedding.
My favorite song by Led Zeppelin BY FAR.
One of my favorite zep tunes since I was a teenager. A LONG time ago...
I love this podcast! My favorite song by my favorite band!!
We love you Robert .....
The Voice !!!!!
These podcasts are incredible. We’re learning so much about this incredible man. ✌️
Achilles is an Epic Masterpiece
Did you notice the guitar weeping beginning in minute 08:28 of the original song on the album
Wow.
I just bought Fate of Nations and Band of Joy. Can't wait to listen.
Fate Of Nations - Excellent choice. Powerful all the way around!!
Jon Anderson turned Led Zeppelin onto Morocco and the desert…rad. Kashmir and Achilles and Tales From Topographic Oceans do sound somewhat similar, which I always knew from listening to all 3 for the past 40 years, thanks Robert for affirming it
The greatest Zeppelin song with Stairway to Heaven.
You go to all of these amazing places, but when I think of Led Zeppelin, I kind of think of myself being stoned at the local park with friends, a frisbee, guitar, and believe it or not, a cassette tape player. Those were the days.
Not only my favorite Zep song, but my favorite song period. Stupendously powerful.
Superb as ever. Robert Plant is a delight to listen to and "Achilles Last Stand" is truly fabulous.
The intro/outro to Achilles Last Stand has always been slightly eerie to me but I love it
Zeppelin was a major part of growing up in the 1970's and 80's and still is for me..i would love to see them play a concert at madison square garden once more before i die..or any more band members get too old to do it.
One of the best piece of music ever done!
Loving these little get together with Robert and his passion for Music .
Listening to Robert makes me want to travel to Morocco!
Best intro/outro of any zep song
Thanks for these podcasts Robert we very much enjoy them.
