Though i prefer grass gravel and sand run-off's as its suppose to keep drivers in check by almost guaranteeing a loss of control, it also causes major accidents and race delays. F1 circuits have mostly opted for pavement run-offs which visually dont look great but does a decent job of reducing such issues.
What I took away from this is that Americans seem to know how to film the beginning of a race better....... GET UP HIGH! I don't need a telephoto low level shot where I can't see the distances like in F1, this was perfectly filmed.
Hinch wouldn't have been on the kerb if Veach gave him room. I'm not saying don't leave a driver enough room to allow them by, but enough to actually let him challenge for the position.
Play in Slow-Motion (0.25 speed) from about 2:10 and wait till you can see Andretti's car as it goes over another car, see how VERY close it came to hitting the driver's (Hinchcliffe's?) head - in this instance a Halo wouldn't have mattered, but even though the driver suffered no hard/heavy contact or damage from it you *could* argue a Halo wouldn't have been necessary, but all it takes is contact (an errant wheel or loose bodywork or worse still, the chassis of another vehicle) to a driver's head and it'll possibly be fatal. My point = Should IndyCar consider using Halo devices on their cars? *Halos, for those not in the know, are compulsory drivers' head protection (cockpit 'surrounds') in Formula 1 as of 2018.
The halo is necessary when it comes to an impact from a car at a perpendicular angle to the drivers head. Think of a car just missing the roll hoop support section where the top of the drivers head is able to be hit from the side. Martin brundle's crash from Brazil 1994' is something along those lines. He got his bell rung when he was hit by Jos Verstappen's rear tire and would have been fatal had it not been a glancing blow. There's lots of videos of that crash on youtube still. There's also the threat of a car doing a head on hit where another car can ride up the nose and impact the driver face first. Think of how Wheldon was killed by the support fence, he hit the fence in a head on impact where he hit a solid object which sheered the top of his vehicle off including himself sadly. The F1 halo probably wouldn't have saved him in that crash but it would in a car to car impact. Still brings to question what track safety can do with catch fencing to prevent things like Wheldon's crash from being fatal. Senna was killed by his tire hitting him on the face and suspension penetrating his brain, a halo type device could have deflected the tire and kept him safe. I get that people are upset by the halo's lack of aesthetics but never have safety measures been about aesthetics. People lost their mind when we started raising the cockpits of cars after Ratzenberger's & Senna's deaths at Imola 94 and here we are today with many many drivers who owe their lives to those very raised cockpits. The same will be said about the halo one day and whatever successor it may have that fits in with the aesthetics of the cars so everyone gets their cake and eats it too.
Paul Tracy needs to shut up. First he says the cars going through the run off caused it. Then he says Hinchcliffe loses it on his own in front of everyone. Then says Hinch jumped the curb and got loose. Hinch got pinched by Veach and he had the preferred line can see that clearly from the in car. Get a clue and wait before you start laying blame.
