I thought Dragons 88 was lovely, this one knocks it out of the park by a mile, it's gorgeous. Now I need one of these, even though I don't know what I'll do with it. Excellent review, Nigel, I get the impression you like this one. Take care, and happy modelling.
Nigel, the gun did not originally have a gun-shield, it only gained one when they worked out it could be used for ground support. So I "believe" there was not a single manufacturer or design for the shield and it was not often used when gun's primary use was AA.
As for colours for your figures, there is an osprey book "Luftwaffe Field Divisions 1941-5" ISBN 9781855321007, as most of the AA guns were crewed by the Luftwaffe. So you will need a "Field Blue" shade for the uniforms very similar to the uniform blue for the RAF, so for you several painters would suggest you use Tamiya XF-50 or Vallejo model Air 71.109 for that and you probably have the Tamiya.
Thanks Steve.. I'll probably never paint them?
I was half expecting you to open the tin and find stacks of butter cookies in little paper cups. The Vomag should be a Flak 18 with a Flak 36 3-part barrel. The flak 18 had an octagonal base while the flak 36 had a square base. The flak 18 had a single piece barrel, but my understanding is that on the Vomag, they used the 3-part flak 36 barrels which were easier to replace as they became worn out. Otherwise, they are pretty much the same gun.
Nigel, the 8,8 cm FlaK was not only anti-aircraft, but very effective in anti-tank and ground action. This is what the box shows. If you would like to get some more PE, than look for Yan Models detail set for this kit, that I also have. Tons of PE, lots of 3D printed parts, and an assembly manual using photographs… I am afraid the manual will be no 100% help when doing the Yan Model set, as it is rather difficult to see should be attached to.
Excellent review again Nigel. The lid on my kit doesn't want to come off either. I think they realised at the end of the packaging line that we need more tyres dropping four more loose in the tin, mine was the same! The instructions look complex to me so am assuming that I will be purchasing yet another reference book.
This gun was one of the most famous of WWII and was designed in the 30s primarily as an anti-aircraft weapon, but it is best known for its anti-tank capabilities apparently.
Dear Nigel,
I met one of my subscribers in Antics in Gloucester a while ago (I bet he subs you too!!) and on that day he bought this very kit!! It cost him about what you paid I recall. I thought at the time I night get one, but I haven't got around to doing so as yet.
Enjoy the project and put your biscuits in the tin when you're done!!
Best regards,
Z
It is a beauty Zinners.. you should build one.
@@NigelsModellingBench Zinzan was going to get it but i got there first Nigel
Looks like a great kit, the figures look pretty good to me for styrene and with a bit of fettling and some decent painting the gives the opportunity for a great looking crew straight out of the box 👍
I thought everyone knew that the 88 was initially designed for anti aircraft, but the high velocity made it perfect for AT…😂😂great vid…and what a cool tin 😊😊😊🇬🇧
Thicko's like me know nothing!!
Yeah he does not know a lot about the 88.
@@NigelsModellingBench ☺️☺️☺️
Nige the Flak 36, having a large gun shield added to give the crew some more protection. They found the flat trajectory, high penetration, and very long range of the Flak 18 anti-aircraft gun made it a very effective bunker buster, as well as later in the war as a tank destroyer.
I have that Pig Model 88mm shell.. maybe I should build it?
Finally a decent unboxing of this kit thanx Nigel. Bought this about 18 months ago and put it away for later.
The old Tamiya one could certainly be displayed on its bogies or deployed I still have the one I built in the 70’s, maybe it’s time to revisit and do a newer version.
The detail on the border models kit is bloody amazing. Great review, hope you build it soon 🤞
Fingers crossed!
Nice review, it will be interesting to see which is the more accurate in size. Thanks for that Nigel 👍
I believe the Border is more accurate?
I think I read somewhere they used the Flak gun as a tank buster because of it's high velocity of the shells
Hi Nigel, Thanks for a great review. I have the Tamiya 88 in my stash. This kit has much more detail and options than my kit. Thanks for sharing. Have a great day. Jeff
Maybe this would have been better Mojo builder Jeff??
@@NigelsModellingBench Could be Nigel, are you thinking about switching?
@@JeffDonahueScaleModeling no mate, this effing Vomag will get finished if it kills me lol. Is your Vomag getting you down?
@@NigelsModellingBench No not at all. I am enjoying the challenge. Have a great day. Jeff
@@JeffDonahueScaleModeling I guess you didn’t start it as a mojo builder?? lol.
Hi Nigel, Just checked one of my Dragon 88's against the Das Werk kit. Same result. The Das Werk kit is bigger and most likely closer to 1/32.
Those reels on the back are communication wires.
I am quite satisfied with my Tamiya Flak 88. This is a beautiful kit but I really do not need it for my plate is full with so many fantastic models to build. Thanks for the review Nigel.👍
Nigel, I was hoping you would get this model, yes a great tin, I made the model about a year ago, went together beautifully apart from a couple of the inevitable instruction errors, like trying to attach a ring around an already cemented post, but all in all a great build.
Been waiting on this for a while
Hi Nige. I've got a Dragon 88mm hidden away somewhere. I've had it years. I look at the instructions sometimes and think 'nah'.
It has three shields too. I wonder which of the two you have is the proper size?
I often wonder if a lot of these kits are meant to be built. Aimed more st collectors than builders. I am guilty of that too. 😊
Anyway, back to the two Revenges. The Airfix was definitely meant to be built. The Occre one remains to be seen. Both are different btw. Totally different. Mind you, we don't know what the real Revenge actually looked like. The Tudors weren't big on cameras.
I ordered one along with the associated Voyager PE set. Yum!
Nice biscuit tin to boot!
Awesome model, just finished building it and yes the tin is cool. Only issue is the instructions.... there are different version that you can build and it is not clear what goes with what.
Thanks for the info!
@@NigelsModellingBench Thank you for reviewing it ! brought the model after viewing your review
8.8 cm Flak 18/36/37/41
8.8 cm Flak 18-36
Barrel length 4.938 m (16 ft 2 in) (56 calibers)
Width 2.3 m (7 ft 7 in)
Height 2.10 m (6 ft 11 in) (firing)
Crew 10
Yeah, saw this Annie and figured out the Das Werk is oversize. Great for anyone posing it with their lancaster.
That was very interesting but wow I can see that kit is way way out of my depth! Thanks for another great review!
Thanks for watching!
If size difference is an issue for giving a spare shield, you could just use the 'wide' shield on the bigger model to get away with it?
maybe all models should come in metal tins.
The 88 mm flak could be used in either role as AA or AT in the field although for home defence primarily AA. I have the Tamiya kit which says 36 for AT and 37 for AA. Hopefully someone with more knowledge about the flak 88 can enlighten us.
Excellent as always, yes what are these reals they are on all 88 guns ?
Apparently for comms cables?
@@NigelsModellingBench yes comms cables. The Vomag mounted guns came in a battery of 4 guns, 2 target data acquisition vehicles which transmitted target dat for the guns, there was also a spare vehicle.. they were given target information transmitted over the cables from the battery Commander. That’s my understanding.
I built this kit, there are numerous errors in the instructions. There was also Chinese text without English translations so I had to use camera and translator to understand these. I thought it was very sloppy of Border not to proof check the instructions by means of letting a modeller build the kit first.
Border manuals are BAD!!
Great review just ordered one from China.
Hope you enjoy it!
Nigel, did you determine which kit is correct to 1/35 scale in the end?
Thanks heaps for the review.
I believe it's the Border model?
Excellent! Mine arrived today. It's a bit geeky but I really like the metal box.
Did I hear somewhere that this is the dragon moulding ?
It is a Border New Tool in 2022 according to Scalemates. The sprues are not Dragon as far as I can see from the manuals.
Thanks for the answer .....watching the video , the wheels definitely aren't. Might get one of these .
I bought the Dragon release when it was issue: (and still have it in the box pretty much unopened). How stand up against theses ? Anyone know ?
