  • Hi Guys, today we crack on with the painting and weathering of the 88mm gun. I have gone rogue on occasions and applied "artistic license" in places just to add a bit of interest, apologies if this sends you into a rage :)
I hope you are all keeping healthy and safe, and getting some quality time in with the family and the bench.
    Cheers Glen

I'm sure there are some guys out there who're absolutely apoplectic over the way you painted and marked your 88... decals from a Kubelwagen!!
I'm not one of them. I think it looks great - artistic license is what makes the model yours, and unique. I agree; trying to make something that's overall grey interesting to look at isn't the easiest thing, and I think you've done a great job here. Great vid, thanks for sharing.

Thank you my friend, much appreciated. It was really fun to paint and once you have played the artistic licenses card it becomes very relaxing as you can't really get anything wrong 😜😜😜

The Jagdpanther and the 88mm were the earliest kits i can recall building, certainly as i was working on the 88mm i was often transported back to the kitchen table in my grandparents house just a short 50 year trip back in time 😄

Very nice job Glen. Just one point that I feel you should be aware of. The reels on the bogeys carried electrical cables, not hose or rope. Their purpose was when a battery of several 88mm guns were in position, they had a fire control centre. The cables were laid out to the centre and the officer in charge would communicate with each gun leader via the cables to aim at whatever height and direction he deemed to be effective. A little while ago I bought the Deutsch Africa Corps version off the internet but didn't realise that it doesn't come with the bogeys, :- (

Amazingly detailed kit for its age - the tooling is from 1973 and I am seriously contemplating getting one. I have a Lancaster nose kit in 1/32 and I reckon they would look kind of cool together.

That sounds like the ingredients for what could be an action backed dio, imagine the nose section just about to come crashing down of the 88 that had just shot it down!!! Lots of potential in that combo for sure 👍

Are you suggesting there were greay 88s coming out of the factory in the late war period? After feb. 18 1943 all german military vehicles and weapons were factory painted either RAL 7028 dark yellow, or a factory camo scheme using the tritonal scheme of yellow, redbrown and green, or the tropentarn schemes of 8000/7008 or 8020/7027. Not grey. Nothing late war was grey unleas it had lasted that long and somehow fallen through the repaint orders in early 43.

Hahaha I defer to your expert knowledge Adam. I am not necessarily all that committed to that degree of accuracy, some times I actually forget about things like that and get fixated on other perhaps less important things like sculpting a miniature 1/35 dick 😇

What are the hoses actually used for on the real thing?
I've only been modeling for a short time so my knowledge of how these guns worked is very limited along with what markings go with what regiments etc. That said, I think most people would never know if it was the correct markings or the correct colour paint or not.

@@HalidonDioramas I can't give you accurate facts regarding the 'hoses' but as I understand it. Many of these guns would be gathered together for Anti-Aircraft cover of a strategic area. Within the battery of guns, a Control Centre would be located, which arranged for a blanket of flak to be put up. This needed to be co-ordinated. The cables from each gun were connected to the control centre, who in turn issued co-ordinates to each gun, so they all knew what height to set fuses and direction to aim, thus achieving optimum coverage to protect the chosen location. A couple of guys on each gun would have headsets on, so they could receive the lastest instructions and make adjustments to the gun and shells.
