Almost 70 years later and his record for most passing yards in a game still stands (554). Just shows you how great he was.
It’s mind boggling, to do that in an era where the passing game was pretty much non existent. Even in todays pass-friendly era, no one has come close.
Mans my great uncle
If a qb throws for over 500 yards in victory, he's getting benched, so he won't get hurt. That was 50s football. When qbs weren't the stars of the show

One of the true pioneers of modern football. Pure passer.
One of the NFL's officials had died and they did not have enough for funeral expenses. They were taking up a collection asking for $10. When they got to Van Brocklin he opened up his wallet handed the guy $20 and said, ' Bury two of them.'
bbigjohnson069 that's badass Refs today deserve that
Without officials there wouldn't be football. Officials make 1000 calls and get 1 wrong and everybody complains about the one missed call. You don't expect star players to be perfect 100 percent of the time, yet for some reason you expect that of officials? There is NOTHING worse in sports than losers doging officials. Have some appreciation. The sport wouldn't exist without them.
It's a JOKE, chirst you must be a barrel of laughs at parties.
Van Brocklin said that, not me. If you see ' ' or " " that means someone else said whatever is in between them. That's the story Steve Sabol told. They're both gone now so who knows? No need to tell me about officiating. I officiated high school basketball for 10 years. We miss more than 1 call out of 1,000 for sure. What bothered me then and still does in any sport is people hat complain but don't know the rules. Then it was parents, now ignorant fans. Normally HS b-ball has one official for every 5 players. Your watching for everything in a set area. Sometimes all 10 players in that area. NFL has one official for roughly every 3 players. More of a specified set of player and/or an area. Officials that did both thought basketball was more difficult. NFL has too many "can't do this" rules.
Lol I love that people got mad at this
:37 the fucking jump throw this guy was a beast
Willie Thrower did this as well the Jump Throw
I love the ones with the black and white game footage where you have to really think to figure out which teams are playing.
Sonny needs to be on this list, one of the greatest passers ever
I’m an eagles fan and Ron jaworski is way more known then sunny jurgenson. a
@@mcray0309 Yes Jurgenson is more associated w/the Refskins & did play by play for the Redskins & he’s in the Hall of Fame. I like Jaws but he didn’t hold a candle to Jurgenson. There’s a great NFL Films video called “Did you see Sonny Jurgenson Play?” Here’s the video.
ruclips.net/video/9glI5sVzSH4/видео.html
@@mcray0309 Sonny is in the HOF; Jaws is not. I'd say Sonny is more 'famous' .
Sonny is my husbands name lol . My great uncle is norm van brocklin. That’s my last name too. Grandparents came from Oregon to California coast. Trying to do family tree research. I’m stuck, but I know thats my great uncle.
Fan of Sonny but it’s tough to get on the 100 greatest players in NFL history because he was on so many bad teams & had few winning seasons where he was in the playoffs.
554 passing yards in a game during the 50's was INSANE considering there weren't all the rules back then favoring the offense like there is now. And it's still never been broken. I think Warren Moon threw for 525 or something like that in a game in the early 90's but that's the closest anyone has gotten to breaking it
Moon had four or five receivers out on every play. NVB played out of a conventional T, or wing-T.
Brady threw like 508 in super bowl 52. That is the most I have ever seen someone throw that I can remember.
Surprised that record has never been touched. I remember Bledsoe having a 500+ game.
Vince Ferragamo had a 509 yds. game.
So many fans have no idea how much easier it is now for a receiver to run his route than it used to be. Once they put in the 5 yds. only rule '78? it loosened it up.
A record that hasn’t been broken in a league that passes the ball more than ever before and this guy was only and the only quarterback to lead two different teams to win championships how is he number 83
Burgess Porter II he threw more interceptions than touchdowns for his career and played almost 70 years ago
Burgess Porter II Peyton Manning won Super Bowl XLI with the Colts and Super Bowl 50 with the Broncos
Top 25 for sure !!!
@@greensmithfootball10, pass defense rules were different. Most qbs then threw more picks than td passes.
@@rishabashok3388, yep..the feature was from before 2016.
Had one of the coolest nicknames also the Dutchman
Norm is a top 50 player...
he belongs much further up the list.
Oh my godness! This guys Amazing! What a touch! if he can put it into the space where its over te shoulder but no to high perfectly ,hes one of the best in my books
Very underrated QB who deserves more attention
It's scary to think what Van Brocklin could have done in today's NFL.
T Wooten how?
600 yards,9 tds per game for 10 yrs in a row......yeah scary.
did norm van brocklin write this
Legend
anyone else remember the interview after the game he lost to a soccer style kicker?
If I remember correctly, someone asked him about the onslaught of foreign-born kickers and his reply was "tighten the immigration laws". . ..
He took a fledgling John Madden underneath his wing and by doing that he shaped the future of pro football in America. In quite a profound way. Thanks, Dutch.
Funny to see coaches sucking down cigarettes on the sideline. Times have changed...
...He was just 57 when he died of a massive heart attack ! { my next birthday that's what I will turn ! } WAY TOO YOUNG ! Norm was Tough and lived hard ! Great piece here, like Sonny said, " he was tough but FAIR "
@@depaola63 it's really unfortunate that he passed away so young. He looked about ten or fifteen years older than he was cause he just didn't take care of himself.
Jurgensen was fantastic. And ....it looks like the Eagles didn’t retire Van Brocklin’s number
tommy k Carson Wentz wears number 11 for the Eagles today
@@dominicharkin1637 Van Brocklin wore #11 with the Eagles.
Imagine what his numbers would have been if receivers couldn’t be tackled and clotheslined 5 yards past the line of scrimmage
It looks like he had a helleva arm and was very athletic!....
Norm was smoking cigs on the sidelines?? Whaaaat? Lol
That was really common back then and also head coaches used to wear full suits for the games. Imagine Belichick wearing a full suit instead of his trademark beat up gray hoodie with the sleeves cut off.
John Madden did as well
Athletes used to spark heaters back in the day in all 4 major sports. Some during halftime. The Knicks used to have ball boys take a cig run before halftime in the 60s. I can't imagine running full speed after that lol.
@@KTF0 Len Dawson said at halftime of Super Bowl I he had a bottle of Coke and a Marlboro. Imagine doing that today.
In Madden games I always through over 700 yds in a single game no problem. I’ve gotten over 1,000 yds too (in a single game). Can you imagine if that was real?? Haha. That’s why I love the Madden games!
I do like the Zing he puts on that ball. A lot of Qb's from that era threw wounded ducks or doesn't look as sharp as his passes
Only 10 seasons ..guy was fantastic,
NFL shop is missing out big time not selling old school sweater style jerseys
Fun fact he was a part of my family
A truly underrated qb
0:08 What's the name of the music?

FUCK'N 83? GOD DAMN NORM VAN BROCKLIN IS ONLY 83?!!!!!!!
HE'S TOP 50.

What is the music they use in the begining?
"Norm Van Brocklin remains the only man in history to quarterback two different teams to an NFL championship"
*_Tom Brady has entered the chat_*
Peyton Manning Colts 06 Broncos 15
This was made before that occurred
The Dutchman.
Final point is moot now considering Peyton Manning has won a Super Bowl with both the Colts and Broncos.
that D carried him to both SB's
+mrkackerwacker oh stfu. valid argument for the second superbowl but he certainly did his part in the first. what about when he carried the defenseless broncos to superbowl 48. Peyton is a top 3 QB of all time
+Kristion Taylor he wasn't good in the playoffs for his first; that's a fact
W but the defense improve at superbowl 50
well, in the SB vs the Bears, Peyton had a respectable 81 QB rating, 25-38, a lot of deke-n-dunk short stuff and one big 53 yrd TD and an INT. At the time, the Bears were an incredible defensive team, as any team that had Rex Grossman at QB BETTER have a great D[you'll remember that was the year of Denny Greens, 'WE ARE WHO WE THOUGHT THEY WERE! tirade, because even with Rex responsible for 5 turnovers[I think 3 picks and 2 fumbles.it might have been six, I'm not sure, at least 5]..anyway, even with Rex tripping all over himself, the Cards still lost thanks to the Bears D taking over the scoring responsibility and of course, this was when Devin Hester was like nothing anyone's ever seen returning kicks
so anyway, considering the Bears D, that's a good game...even still, if the Bears had a good QB, with Hester's opening kick TD, the Colts are in trouble...but they had Rex, King of all that is horrible in the world of QB's...mostly you need a QB that manages a game and keeps the mistakes to a minimum when you have a good D, but ANY QB must limit mistakes,,,that is why I think Favre was and is over-rated...too many INT's...when he was hot, no one better, but he took stupid chances too much...I think he only has one ring for a reason, Reggie White--just kidding...the reason is like the Vikings opick he threw as an old man in the freezing cold...
now that final SB Peyton won, he was awful nearly the whole game, fumbled 2x, lost one, one INT and no TD's, 56 rating and 13-23 for 140 or so yards...ouch...
Norm was a great QB but not a coach. He clashed with Fran Tarkenton over his scrambling. Wasn't Norm the cause of Fran getting traded to NY?
Jefff Definitely. Giant coach Allie Sherman accepted Tarkenton's scrambling. So did Bud Grant when he went back to the Vikings
Jefff NO QUESTION
Van Brocklin's nutty refusal to get along with Tarkenton is one of the most vivid examples of bad coaching in the history of coaching. But no, it wasn't Norm that caused the trade. At the end of the '66 season the Vikings were in turmoil. They won 4 games that year. Van Brocklin quit. Tarkenton wanted a change of scenery and got it.
@@OnePost909 Did Bud Grant push to bring him back? Bud was most likely used to a guy like Fran coming from 3 down football in Canada. He had a QB who could run in Winnipeg with Ken Ploen.
@@Jefff72 It's not really known. Bud provides no insight on this in his memoir (nor on anything else of interest). I would guess he didn't object when GM Jim Finks said, "Tarkenton wants out of N.Y."
NVB threw more interceptions then touchdowns TD-INT: 173-178
No one will ever break his record. I mean no one
Na, it'll happen eventually. It's not THAT far out of reach...527 has happened twice, and over 500 has probably happened like 100 times.
Damn he went to my high school
how is he throwing spirals with that damn melon
The NLF win super bowl / Trophie?
So this guy is better than derrick brooks or strahan ?
PacmanEMS uh, yeah. Very much so.
F YEAH
I'm sorry but you cannot rank him higher than Fran Tarkenton.
😆, drinking boose and smoking heaters, and it still didn't hinder him from performing on the field...
Norm is my great uncle!
@@SoapyIsThe1 HA HA, I'll bet you've heard some tall tales in the past...
Not no more Peyton Manning and Tom Brady has joined him on that
Best Eagles Quarterback all time wasn't McNabb sorry
Where do you put RC, Jaws, and Gabriel?
Randall was terribly coached and which wasn't his fault, Jaws wasn't quite good enough to get it done, Gabriel was passed his prime Van Brocklin was the best hands down he won a championship, Wentz may give Norm a run for his money.
Mark Nairn hell no he won’t give brocklin a run for his money
@@maxpuppy96, if Wentz can stay healthy enough to run 16 games.
@@mylonxbox3892 Your right
Sonny Jurgenson should be on this list.
He passed for over 500 yards

Until Peyton Manning won super bowl 50
@3:58 TOTAL CHEAP SHOT !!
Football used to be a rough sport
Great NFL QB but as a Head Coach, he was terrible. Ask Fran Tarkenton.

Great player. Not a good coach.
Incredible quarterback. Awful coach.
