    I PREFER SURFING LESSER WAVES ALONE... COMPARED TO SCORING WITH HEAVY CROWDS. ANYONE ELSE?!

      Dude, couldn't agree more! Personally, i kinda suck at crowd control. Sometimes i don't care about the paddle battle or slalom on the inside but usually i'm alone somewhere on lesser waves but having waaaay much more fun

    Thanks for sharing the adventures. For ppl like me who cant paddle out anymore due to health, its great to get stoked again ! That feeling of walking over the dunes and seeing sets! As a SC surfer, all those NC beaches have great memories of fun trips chasing hurricane swell back in the 80s and 90s surfing under the lighthouse.

    "Don't leave waves to find waves." - Once saw perfect Kitty Hawk (as I remember). But said, "if it's this good it's way better further south. That was a mistake.

      Def made that mistake as a non OBX resident. If you north is good enough and not crowded never worth it to drive the extra hour lol. Plus I’m
      Not a barrel hound like the guys down south. So the slightly smaller waves up north work fine for me most the time lol

    The amount of quality content you put up is insane. I remember growing up you would wait for months for a company to drop a new DVD, and you guys would spend months making your 15 or 20 minute clip. You come up with that almost weekly. It really is mind blowing. Good on ya

    Will never forget the summer in the early 90s there. Were we had around about 5 hurricanes and tropical storms just offshore about 100 to 150miles from us and that whole week and more they were offshore they pushed in the best surf in consecutive days while they were offshore for that whole summer I’ve ever seen here. Seemed like I got to ride everyday just hitting my local spots here that late summer. Although that same year surfing at the lighthouse before they moved it I was surfing the south section and a guy surfing the northern jetty got struck by lightning, at the time I was literally telling a fellow Navy buddy how the storm was a good distant away and I was going to catch a few more rides., rt after that I felt my hair stand up and a weird feeling and bam just few 100 yards from me I saw that guy get hit as he was dropping in from the wave. My friend and I went over to help him out and a few others helped get him to shore. He was sent to the hospital in serious condition but to this day I still don’t know if he lived or died. I was young then and wanted to get bk in the surf after the storm passed.

      Windswell is typically 11/12seconds and under... Long period energy of 13sec+ can only come from storms that are further away, hence the term. This swell was one of those.

      Very well aware of speed ramping, even since back when it was only available in After Effects. Cutting 20min videos every week, I get lazy on smoothing the transitions now and then, mostly if it’s not a good clip to begin with.

      A friend and I were at the head of the lineup, the guy i burned paddled around us, then went on the next set wave right after. So i went as if he wasn't there. He knew it wasn't his, so he just kindly kicked out though, so that was nice. He's one of my friends from up in Nags Head anyway. I wouldn't expect anyone who's been waiting 15min for a set to give me a wave within 2min of paddling around them... So i assume people understand when someone burns them if they've just back paddled the peak.

    That surf would be, Hawaii = 2 ft crap, California = 3 ft okay, North Carolina = 4 ft fun, Gulf of Mexico = 6 ft going off, Great Lakes = 10 ft Nuking. I also like surfing with a friend or two but that's about it. It stupid to sit in the pack fighting for waves and then trying to miss everyone caught on the inside paddling out.

  • @smittenbythemitten894

    Brett, you have a great attitude towards surfing, and your editing is superb, and yet, you continue to perpetuate a "privileged" nature that leads us to feel like your not stoked unless the waves are world class. You and Ben (surnames not required) share a similar stoke, but you've been coming off as dissatisfied much too often for a mellow guy who loves waves regardless of conditions. In my honest opinion, you should be competing on a world class level. You have the metal. Perhaps whan your kids are older... Just reel it in a bit and enjoy each and every time you're able to even stand up on a wave ( which you do with incredible acumen). Just being frank; I'm slowly losing interest in your channel.

    • @smittenbythemitten894
      @smittenbythemitten894 5 лет назад

      *when*, sorry

    • @brettbarley
      @brettbarley  5 лет назад

      Smitten by the Mitten I’m just being real... the conditions were difficult, and the long period energy and onshore winds made for very closed out inconsistent swell, that wasn’t super rippable unless you got the right one. I’m not going to lie and say everything is epic if it isn’t. I never want to be fake, and anyone who says every swell is awesome isn’t being honest.
      I try to promote positivity through those times it doesn’t all pan out. When you spend an entire day driving up and down the coast checking spots, surfing in crowds for 3hrs not catching but a few waves, and continually showing up to the spot after it’s turned off (if it was on) it’s a bummer, but it happens! And being mindful it’s just one day, and there’s always tomorrow is the bright side of it all.
      I grew up and live in a place with good wave quality. Our standards around here are pretty high, so that’s part of my struggle. I try to be optimistic when most all my friends are over it and go to work cause it’s not as good as expected. People from the OBX definitely tend to be jaded in regards to our expectations for surf conditions. I’m working to improve on that personally. And honestly sometimes a swell doesn’t seem fun, or I don’t feel like I’m performing well, then at the end when I see the footage, it looks so much better than it seemed at the time. But I never know how it’ll look when I’m shooting stuff.
      I’d say I use to be way more negative than I am now. I’m sorry you seem to feel the opposite. It’s the RUclips community as a whole who has helped change my perspective and I’m so thankful for it. Not only do I live somewhere where a certain surf condition is expected most swells, but for my whole surf career prior to the Vlog I had to shoot in certain surf conditions at a certain caliber to put out a banger edit to get views and publicity. So I always put so much pressure on myself, and required better waves to be able to succeed. It’s thanks to the support here that I’ve been given an opportunity to change my standards and reassess my mindset on what’s “good” and focus more on what’s fun!
      Anyway I’m rambling... long story short. I’ll always be honest, and I’m never going to try and make things seem better than they are. I always strive for positivity, and promoting it amongst the times things don’t work out. And I’m sorry if sometimes it comes off wrong... but since I run this channel as transparently as possible, and don’t put on a mask to make me look more perfect than I am, sometimes that’s gonna happen. I hope you can see where I’m coming from. And am genuinely curious of your thoughts as well, so thank you for that.
      Have a good one

      @smittenbythemitten894 5 лет назад

      Brett, thank you for the reply; you always articulate yourself well. I think my post was motivated by the irony of the fact that you appear to be one the most modest surfers, relative to how well you surf. Let's be honest, you rip. I always enjoy watching your videos and their unique perspective on Eastern/South Eastern surfing. I grew up in California and currently live in Michigan, where I scrape and claw to get the most meager of waves on lake Michigan. Your videos (and Ben's, Jamie's, Beef's, and Blair's(skim kids) keep me going in this surf desert. I often forget that this is your profession and your trying to put out a good product, and you do. To be perfectly honest, I don't know much about your professional career and why you don't currently display your talent on a world class level. You definitely could. In any case, keep shredding and enjoying the stoke of surfing. I'm a fan. Cheers.

    • @brettbarley
      @brettbarley  5 лет назад

      @@smittenbythemitten894 I really appreciate the support, and am so stoked to hear my videos get you psyched to surf. That means a lot, and is why i love making them. As far as me and my career... If i was single and could use what i make to travel more, I maybe would be more world traveled and higher in the surf industry. But, I chose family over bigger fame, and use my earnings to support them, Promote the wonderful Island i get to call home, and travel as far and wide as i can with the budget i have. The trips i do are expensive (Namibia, Tahiti, etc...), but I'd rather do fewer trips a year that are epic and bucket list, than more trips that aren't to such incredible locations. Thanks for the support, and maybe I'll see ya around the Great Lakes one day, I've been wanting to come out there and surf to see what it's like.

    What? Is that this week? Slopped out waist high mush yesterday at Emerald Isle and Friday ankle high mush at Carolina Beach. I know Hatteras gets better waves than the rest of NC because of continental shelf and generational location but there usually isn't this much disparity. Is this swell just completely missing the South Coast? Or was this shot earlier this year?
