  • The Atlanta Falcons' surprise selection of Washington quarterback Michael Penix Jr. in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft looks a little different after a week of thinking it over according to host Aaron Freeman and his guest Damian Parson (@LockedOnNFLDraft). They discuss Penix's role behind Kirk Cousins and whether or not he'll push for the starting job sooner versus later.
    Then, they discuss the rest of the Falcons 2024 draft class including the three pass-rushers they took after the first round: Clemson defensive tackle Ruke Orhorhoro, Washington edge-rusher Bralen Trice, and Oregon defensive lineman Brandon Dorlus. They discuss whether or not Falcons head coach Raheem Morris could have any of them impacting as rookies in the same ways Los Angeles Rams outside linebacker Byron Young and defensive tackle Kobie Turner did a year ago. Finally, they discuss some of the Falcons Day 3 standouts including Notre Dame linebacker J.D. Bertrand and Alabama running back Jase McClellan, before discussing if the Falcons did an adequate job in the draft despite ignoring some key needs at cornerback and wide receiver.

    The problem with the Penix pick is not picking him, not even picking him 8th. If you think he is your guy for the future then go for it. The problem is they already had Kirk Cousins which will handcuff thier ability to build around either QB. If they don't sign Cousins then this is a brilliant pick. Use the $90M over the first two years ($50M signing bonus and he has $40M in gauranteed salary, so net is $90M over 2 yrs) you are paying Kirk C to build around Penix. I do worry about Penix injuries from Indiana but fair eough he has been injury free in Washington. And he will need to be more decisive when throwing over the middle, esepcailly intermediate routes. But that is very coachable and he has a rcket of an arm. Maybe the strongest arm in the draft to be fair. I just think you take one or the other, not both QBs.
    BTW: Kirk Cousins has a history of pouting when he is not getting his way. And he cannot carry a team. He has some come from behind wins but the reality is tends to shrink in big situations. He is 1-4 in PO games. Yea, D was not great for him sometimes butt he did not help either.

    We signed a broken QB and then drafted one. Kirk coming off an Achilles and Penix has had 4 major surgeries. One being his throwing arm and another on his knee that requires a brace on him and Washington asked him to not run as much bc of that. So yeah, that's what we have. Two gifted broken QBs and a line that's never been known for keeping QB upright. Might have another Vick on our hands. A dude that only completed one full season out of 15. Made of glass. I hope I'm wrong, but they took a lot of risks with these QBs. Desperate moves don't always pay off.

    • @achilles1373
      @achilles1373 Месяц назад +1

      There is no back shoulder fade from a guy who throws side arm passes. Also... Penix only threw to sideline routes. Probably bc it's hard to get the ball over the D line when you're side arm throwing. They need to correct that or else he will lead the league in passes deflected. He has an arm, but it's obvious he didn't have a true QB coach. He can't throw the short passes as good as he can the deep. He threw a lot of 50/50 balls that won't fly in the NFL. He's not day 1 ready at all. Needs a couple years.

    I really don’t think people are truly evaluating this the correct way. London and Pitts are both really good, but have not proven to be legit through no fault of their own but due to poor QB play. The only way to get a true evaluation of them was to have them play with a legit QB. We all know we you’re gonna over pay in free agency. So they got a QB who would be able to give them a real evaluation of how good those guys can be before negotiating their 2nd deals. Minshew wasn’t going to do that. It also wouldn’t be negotiating the contract having played with bums for 4 years.

Shows good leverage and hand usage. Being 6’4 290+ also helped in his favor as he has enough to grow into size wise. Also the versatility in the d line players we brought in means that we can have mismatches all over the place because you know one of them is going to take advantage of the o line with the bodies we’ll throw at them. Also, look for a bunch of stunts where the other guys who are typically compared with Ruke from the draft can’t do what he can in that situation.

      Well heres the thing. Hes a great player, but his running style is very physical and aggressive. You want to get something for him, before youre forced to resign him( which i doubt they will). You could get a conditional 2nd-3rd for him right now(3rd rounder for less than 1000 yds, 2nd rounder for 1000+ etc). In two seasons youd be lucky to get a 5th-7th with his particular running style. So its not a dumb move to reload early. Still way i see it you dont ride bijan too hard next year either. You give tyler work and force a trade and sign...do right by him you know ?

      @@kellydriskill7197 Good points. Devonta Freeman was a similar back and faded fast. Wear and tear is always a concern but he doesn't get that many touches per game and backs don't command a high trade value. Also, Dallas wins enough games that a pick from them will be late in the round. I get your point though.

    WHAT DO YOU DO IF KIRK IS PLAYING AT A PRO BOWL LEVEL AFTER 2 YEARS AND PENIX IS UNPROVEN do you dump a top 10 QB for an unproven QB when 1st round QBs bust at an 80 percent rate. What happens if Penix is below average or busts and Kirk goes to a team and continues playing at a top 10 level. TERRY RAHEEM WILL BE FIRED. What happens if they Keep Kirk but trade Penix (he won't stay here for 3 4 5 years). Then they should be fired for wasting the value of a top 10 pick - look how little top 10 QBs that don't pan out get traded for 4th round 6th round etc

    On draft night I thought it was a bad pick. After a week of watching games from Penix's last season i think it's worse than I thought. He made some great throws but more often than not he made horrible throws. More often than not he made bad reads. More often than not he wasn't accurate. Penix would have been a great pick at 43 but not at 8. They should've taken Rome or Turner at 8.
