Actually it is not a problem about quality of Land Rover. It can be easily seen that differential made by FoMoCo. It is about quality of FORD MOTOR COMPANY. Mine is the same car (2012). What was your km/milage?
Thanks for this video, I have an intermittent grinding noise coming from my diff when turning, It's not the full duration of the turn though It's literally one second long but happens a few times almost as if its a 'high point' that catches. I'm dreading it as I know it'll be a 4 figure bill
I will have to edit and upload the video of me trying to get the pinion shaft out of the diff casing - that will scare you a bit more - but mine had got so hot it has welded itself solid....still haven't got the shaft out yet...yours may be fine if you catch it early enough! - Have no fear and get stuck in!
No, there were no indications it was going to fail in our case. Oftentimes there is a groaning or rumbling indication bearing wear, but ours was silent. After a massive fight I managed to get the pinion shaft nut off (will have to put the video of that up - it was a huge fight) but the bearing had welded itself to the shaft and no one could shift it not even the local Land Rover specialist, so I fitted a replacement diff in the end!
It is the same if not similar....they both use the Haldex clutch system for AWD - although this is an ealry FL2 so uses the gen 3 Haldex and I think the Volvo uses the Gen 4 - good spot though!

Well done ant, glad no 1 hurt it could have been much worse
Was it never serviced then regularly as it should be ,or had oil topped up? Shoes the significance of this to save money and lives!
Oh boy, I got a Volvo XC70 with a Haldex 3 that needs this taken care of… 😣

If I want to change the oil, what oil do I use?

Hi Ant, were there any other indications of it going bad or did it just lock up? Also, we’re you able to get it rebuilt?

Seems to be same rear diff as Volvo xc60
